Bigi Pan
Bigi Pan het Bijzonder Beheersgebied heeft een landoppervlak van ongeveer 68.000 ha. en een even groot oppervlak aan zeewater. Naast de steeds toenemende belangstelling van toeristen, is het ook een populair gebied voor vissers en jagers. Letterlijk vertaald betekent Bigi Pan Groot Meer. Bigi Pan is een zwampgebied ten noorden van de Nickerierivier, door het Jamaerkanaal verbonden met de rivier. Het is de grootste lagune van Suriname. Het water is brak (half zoet, half zout).
Waar ligt het Bigi Pan Bijzonder Beheersgebied en hoe kom je er?
Bigi Pan ligt ten noorden van de oostwest rivier. Het gebied grenst aan de Atlantische Oceaan. Vanuit Paramaribo is het ongeveer 3 uur rijden. Via Nieuw Nickerie kun je het gebied per boot bereiken via het 8 kilometer lange Jamaerkanaal. Het kanaal begint bij een sluis met een sleephelling.
Wat kun je er beleven?
Wat meteen opvalt zijn de houten constructies en huisjes op het water. Deze worden gebruikt door onder andere vissers, vogelspotters en touroperators. In sommige huisjes is een overnachting mogelijk. Overdag kun je er ook heerlijk je maaltijd nuttigen en lekker uitwaaien in een hangmat. Vogelliefhebbers kunnen hier hun hart ophalen, want er komen ruim 120 verschillende vogelsoorten voor. Sommige trekvogels komen rond de jaarwisseling vanuit het koude noorden en strijken hier neer om te overwinteren. Enkele soorten die met name de warme lucht opzoeken zijn de rode ibis, de visarend en de stern. Het gebied is ook rijk aan vele andere diersoorten. Als je geluk hebt, dan zie je een kaaiman of een miereneter. Tijdens de boottocht kun dikwijls visjes uit het water zien springen, soms springt er zelfs spontaan een in de boot. Behalve het spotten van de vele diersoorten kun je ook je geluk beproeven met een hengel. Geniet van een zonsopkomst of een zonsondergang deze zijn hier adembenemend. Neem je camera mee, zonnebrandolie, een hoed of pet en een middel tegen de muggen.

The Bigi Pan Nature Reservation is situated near Nieuw Nickerie. Bigi Pan, which means ‘Big Lake’, is a swamp area North of the Nickerie River. In addition to the ever-increasing interest of tourists, it is also a popular area for fishermen and hunters. It´s the habitat of over 120 different bird species. Bird lovers can fully enjoy this place. It´s the largest lagoon in Suriname with brackish water (half sweet, half salt). Around the turn of the year some migratory birds from the cold north come here to hibernate. Some species, in particular the Scarlet ibis, the Osprey and the Stern, seek out the warm air. During the boat trip, you can often see fish jump up out of the water, and sometimes even into the boat. The rich fishing waters are a food source for many birds. In this area, in the swamps and along the coast, huge amounts of fish and shrimp are caught. The fish are not only for the local market, but are also exported, often as dried fish. Bigi Pan borders the Atlantic Ocean. Striking upon the open water are the wooden constructions and the cottages, that are being used by the fishermen, the birdwatchers and the tour operators. In some of the cottages it is possible to stay in for the night. During the day you can also enjoy your meal and the fresh air while lying in a hammock. A boat trip through the Bigi Pan area is a special experience and different from all the other excursions throughout Suriname. The boatswain and your expert guide will ensure you of an unforgettable experience.
