Under-the-radar Food Tour of SICILY, Italy - Sicily STREET FOOD + ITALIAN Couscous | Vegan Cultures

Did you know that a lot of Italian food just happens to be vegan?

In my series Vegan Cultures, I explore traditional plant-based food from around the world. In collaboration with @SlowFoodInt and with the support of Meatless Monday, this episode is taking us to Sicily.

We're starting in Palermo to taste some of its famous street food like Pane e Panelle (chickpea fritters in a sandwich) and Cazzilli (potato croquettes).

In Trapani, we'll taste a traditional pesto called Pesto alla Trapanese, which is served with the local pasta shape Busiate. Here, we also learn that Sicilians have their very own couscous dishes, which are a product of North African and Arabic influences. We'll taste Couscous con le Verdure, a delicious dish of couscous soaked in a rich vegetable stock and served with veg.

Afterwards, the journey takes us to Modica, where we find some local stuffed flatbreads like Scaccia and Buccaturedda filled with loads of herbs, tomatoes and aromatics, as well as a savoury pastry called Scifitieddu that is filled with Italy's best summer ingredients. And there's Vastedda, a simple fried dough snack.

Modica is also known for its very own method of making chocolate, a result of the Spanish reign during which cocoa beans arrived in Sicily. We'll see how the chocolate is made from scratch and why it is so different to any other chocolate you might have had before.

And finally, we'll visit Taormina to taste Sicily's famous granita with five different flavours: Strawberry, peach, lemon, almond and coffee. Plus, we'll learn that granita is actually a breakfast and sometimes even eaten with bread!

This series is all about the kind of food that just happens to be vegan - food that emerged from poverty, religion or foreign influences. As such, it’s the type of food that can be truly sustainable. It has already stood that test of time to prove that its core ingredients can grow dynamically in the local climate, while the dishes that sprung from it have been welcomed into the cultural fabric.
But often, these dishes get overlooked as plant-based options. So it's time to uncover the under-the-radar plant-based foods that exist all around us.

Let me know in the comments which culture I should visit next and what kind of dishes I might find!

Sicilian Street Food in Palermo ???????? CRAZY Italian BBQ + HUGE Arancini in Sicily!!

In this episode, we’re in Sicily! Sicily is a massive island in the south of Italy, the largest island in the Mediterranean! Our first stop on our journey across this culturally rich island is the capital city, Palermo! The ancient city of Palermo is home to some amazing and unique foods, which we will be showing you in today’s video.

We start the day with Granita with a Brioche, a very typical Sicilian breakfast. We highly recommend trying the “Granita di caffe e panna” which is Coffee and Panna, and the “Granita ai frutti di bosco” which is a mixed berry with panna. The brioche was light and fluffy!

????Caffetteria del Corso

Next, we venture into the Ballàro Market, the crowded and chaotic market in the heart of Palermo. We got to see all of the in-season produce from the agriculturally-rich Sicilian countryside. We also stopped at a street food stall serving all kinds of Sicilian street foods. We wanted to try their massive arancini, deep fried rice balls that are stuffed with ragu. This snack was so big, it could be considered a whole meal!

????Mercado Ballàro

We still had more food in Palermo that we wanted to try, so we made our way to the Vucciria Market. We found a local bakery to pick up Sfincione, which is Sicilian pizza. What makes it different from other Italian pizza is the use of Sicilian ingredients like anchovies, strong cheese, onions and herbs. It’s also served on a rectangular crust. We sat down the market’s bar to eat the Sfincione and enjoy it with a glass of Italian beer.

????Panificio Pietro Bonaccorso & Dadalia Osteria

Before taking an afternoon siesta, we had one more street food to try. We went to 'Nni Franco U'Vastiddaru for the famous Pani câ meusa. This is a veal spleen and lung sandwich, served street side. There was also cheese topped on the offal. The texture was good but unfortunately, the sandwich lacked any flavours.

????’Nni Franco U'Vastiddaru

In the evening, we wanted to have a full Sicilian spread for dinner. We went to the traditional Osteria Al Ferro Di Cavallo. Their menu is full of Sicilian specialties, and we managed to pick out some dishes we wanted to try. We ordered “Pasta Sarde e finocchietto” (Sardine & Fennel pasta), “Pasta alla Norma” (Sicilian Pasta with eggplant, marinara, and basil), “Involtino di Carne” (Meat Roll), “Insalata Sicilian” (Sicilian Salad), the most amazing Cannolo for dessert and their house wine to drink.

????Osteria Al Ferro Di Cavallo

Don’t worry, we have a lot MORE Sicilian street food to try in the next episode!!! Stay tuned and make sure you’re subscribed so that you never miss an episode from our Italian Food series! Thanks for watching Chopstick Travel!

Did you know that Palermo is the capital of Sicily and one of the best street food capitals in the entire world? Which is why we did our own tour of Palermo’s street food!

Why is food such a big deal in Palermo, Italy? Because of Palermo’s history! It’s been conquered by more than 15 different nations…and all of those nations contributed delicious foods :)

PALERMO FOOD: The street food vibe is BIG in Sicily, with everything from fried potatoes and chickpea pancakes to freshly squeezed juice and strange meat on a grill. Be brave and taste all of the Italian street food! Especially in the famous markets like Ballarò, Vucciria, Capo, and Borgo Vecchio!

PALERMO PIZZA: This isn’t necessarily a 15 inch personal pizza made in a traditional Italian pizza oven. In fact, the Palermo street food markets actually had a mini pizza that was salty, greasy, and oh-so-delicious.

PALERMO BAKERY: The city of Palermo has dozens of bakeries, but we think we’ve found the best pasticcerias in town with the best local treats! Without giving it all away, we definitely encourage you to try the cassata!

PALERMO WINE: When in Palermo, Sicily, Italy, you must drink wine! In fact, Jana’s all-time favorite wine is a Sicilian red wine: Nero d’Avola. We didn’t feature it in this video, but we definitely enjoyed some while we were there!

PALERMO WEATHER: During our trip in late May 2022, the weather was wonderful! Sunny, warm days yet mild evenings with a nice breeze. This was perfect weather to visit a bakery in the morning, the beach in the afternoon, and enjoy street food every evening!

Did you know that Palermo has some of the most popular street food around the world? So it’s definitely worth a visit!

$20 Sicilian Street Food Tour in PALERMO Italy ???? OMG! The Best Food to Eat in Sicily

The Best Street Food in Italy ???????? In this week's video we're trying Street Food in Palermo, Sicily, Italy. Palermo is very famous for its amazing street food which has been influenced by so many cultures over the centuries. Sicily has some amazing food!

We start off trying of their breakfast foods, granita (granite) which is basically shaved ice with various flavours and can be topped with whipped cream. You can also order it with a side of brioche (bread). We found this at Cafeteria Del Corso.

Next up we tried chickpea fritters as a sandwich (Panino Con Le Panelle) and potato croquettes (Crocche or Crocchè). We found both at a restaurant called Solo Patate.

We tried arancina in our last video of Palermo but you can't do a street food of Palermo without arancina. This time we tried a traditional kind called Burro at a place called Sfrigola Via Maqueda.

We then decided to try something sweeter. Italy is super famous for it's cannoli. We went to a place called Cannoli & Co for a pistachio flavoured cannolo.

Lastly we went to a famous spot called Spinnato to try a Sicilian style pizza called Sfincione.

We are starting our morning at the insane Catania Fish Market. This place is buzzing with fish mongers screaming, chopping and transporting seafood that came fresh from the port early in the morning. For seafood lovers, this market is heaven!

Within the market are a few seafood restaurants and street food stalls. We stopped into a fried fish joint and ordered a Fish in Cone (no bones) for breakfast! The mixed fish were fresh and super crunchy!

????Scirocco (inside fish market)

As the fish market slowly closed for the day, we made our way across Catania for some Sicilian treats. We stopped into a pasticceria and ordered a few dishes. The first was Arinicina Ragu, which was shaped like Mt. Etna and STUFFED with cheese! The next dish was Cassata which is a Sicilian sponge cake. It was a little too sweet for us. We also ordered our favourite Italian dessert, cannoli. These are so incredible in Sicily!!! And to wash it all down and balance the sweetness, we ordered a shakerato coffee. This caffe had a traditional feel!

????Pasticceria Savia

After exploring Catania in the afternoon, it was time to eat a unique Sicilian dinner. We went to a local trattoria that is famous for their horse meat, which we had never tried before. We ordered the horse fillet steak, a plate of mussels and caponata (fried eggplant salad). The horse was absolutely delicious and served medium rare, and we highly recommend trying it while in Catania!

STREET FOOD CAPITAL of ITALY | Massive SICILY STREET FOOD tour | What to eat in SICILY

SICILY STREET FOOD | BEST STREET FOOD TOUR in PALERMO, SICILY
We're in Palermo, Sicily! In this 3 part series we're hunting down the best Sicilian food and Sicilian street food. Palermo has a thriving street food culture that's big on offal and punchy, bold flavours.

This is our second video from Palermo and it's all about Sicilian street food! We start the day with one of Palermo's most popular street foods pani ca meusa or spleen sandwich. A sesame covered roll is stuffed with chopped spleens and lungs of veal and if you want ricotta or caciocavallo cheese.

Next up we sample a sandwich stuffed with pane e panella and crocche- chickpea fritters and potato croquettes- reflective of Palermo's diverse food culture which has been influenced by its historical invaders. Then it's onto one of Sicily's most delicious treats- gelato in brioche which is often eaten for breakfast!

We then head to a bakery outside the historic centre of Palermo to find sfincione- this region's version of pizza. The Sicilians have been baking sfincione since the mid 1800's and you'll see it all over town. However we highly recommend this bakery- the sfincione was out of this world! We end with stigghiola at Vucciria Market- lamb intestines cooked over the grill.

We hope you enjoyed this street food in Italy video, thanks for watching! #sicilianstreetfood #italystreetfood #sicilyfood
