Street Market Provisioning in Guatemala for a Sailing Adventure (Ep.101 Sailing w/the Litzenbergers)

Sailing out of the Rio Dulce, Guatemala | Episode 42

Our 3 month sailing hiatus has come to an end as we prepare to set sail for our season 2 adventures aboard WE|Sail. We set sail from Rio Dulce in Guatemala and head for the port town of Livingston to check out and finally smell the salty air.

The last few months being tucked away in Rio Dulce was magical. We got to explore some stunning gems of Guatemala and adventure inland as much as we could.

After, some small boat projects and many bon voyage dinners with our new friends, we set out for the salty seas. However, Guatemala was hanging on as long as it could and wasn't about to let us go easily. We lose our windlass the morning we tried to lift anchor. You could say that our season wasn't starting off on the right foot, but we weren't going to let that hold us back from leaving.

Our trip out of the Rio Dulce was, in our opinion the only way it should be done, with friends, music, laughs and breathtaking scenery. We had the most proper send off from Guatemala by the entourage of friends who joined us for the journey out to sea.

We thank Pamela & Sheldon and the entire crew of Boatique who made our feel right at home in their beautiful hotel and marina tucked in the jungle of Rio Dulce.

It was a wonderful experience to stay in this know hideout for our first hurricane season. A do not miss on anyones travel agenda.

All the music in this episode was recorded and filmed on the boat. The very talented and entertaining musicians Pali Manali & Nahuel Huapi are sailing and traveling the world with the music.

Ep.204 Leaving Rio Dulce - Guatemala

Sorry for losing a week, as you may know San Blas its not know for having much phone service aka internet. We hope this video makes it for the lost week.
Margarida has gone for family reasons and I find 2 patreons to come and help me sail to Panama. Dougy is a Canadian who has raced very small boats but Adam is new to the game and wishes to know what it is all about. We leave the beautiful Rio going again through the magnificent gorges and check out of Livingston, at the mouth of the Rio Dulce. But getting across the bar is another story with us standing a very good chance of not making it due to our 6 feet 4 inch draft.
Before we leave the Rio, I give some tips to cruisers who may wish to visit Rio Dulce to make it a little easier.

Give it thumbs a up if you liked this episode!

BAHAMAS WE'RE READY! Provisioning Our Sailboat | Sailing Vlog Ep. 15

We had been waiting to head to the Bahamas for over four months but our trip kept being delayed by all the things that continuously stoped working on our catamaran, from the AIS to the Auto Pilot, Generator and Inverter, we simply couldn’t get things to work all together for months! But after patiently waiting, it was finally time to head to the Bahamas, we prepared the Pet import permit to travel internationally, provisioned for three months worth of food and supplies, and the day before the weather window opened we received the USCG Registration of our sailing vessel. Guatemala Visa Extension (2020) | Buses from Xela | Authentic Dim Sum in Guatemala City | Ep. 65

Recently (Feb 3, 2020), I went to Guatemala City to extend my tourist visa. In this video, I will share where to apply it, how long it takes and what you need to provide. Normally, tourists can only stay in Guatemala for 90 days. By continuing to stay in Guatemala, tourists mostly go to Mexico or Belize and come back for another 90 days (going to Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador doesn't count). Or they choose to extend their visa in Guatemala City. Even though many travellers are so generous of sharing their visa extension experience, the policy is keep changing which makes the information is not updated anymore.

Since I traveled from Xela to Guatemala City, I would also show you the bus I took. I used the company called Cristóbal Colón. It's a Mexican company which is quiet new in Guatemala I believe. The trip was better than I expected. Both Xela and Guatemala City do not have a central bus station but bus companies stay at the same location. If you are going on the weekend, I suggest you to purchase the ticket in advance because my bus one Sunday was full! However, when I came back on Monday, there were only 5 passengers including me. Bus companies in Guatemala are not well organised as those in Mexico. The information on their website or facebook is very brief or not up to date. So, it is necessary to confirm the bus schedule ahead. Anyway, you can make it as a day trip. I chose to stay a night in the city because I didn't want to stress myself out.

After I had my visa done, I went to a Korean grocery store to pick up some Asian food. Not far from there, I found a very fancy Chinese restaurant which served dim sum. After leaving Mexico City, I haven't had proper Chinese food for 3 months. My stomach was so happy and I also ordered some take away to share with my teacher in Xela.

***This is more like a vlog style of video. I didn't come with a script. What I said might not be very organised. The time stamp down below might help:

0:00 Bus station in Xela
1:30 Take a look of the bus
2:25 30mins break of the bus ride: Where did we go?
4:14 Hotel room tour
6:59 Where to get the visa extension and the application form
7:55 Korean grocery store
8:36 Dim sum in a nice Chinese restaurant
11:00 Guatemala visa extension: Step by step
13:37 How to choose the bus
15:04 Is Guatemala City safe?

✍️ Blog post that I mentioned ➡️
***BIG CREDIT to Dirt Cheap Travel Guide! They wrote a very detail blog post about how to get visa extension in Guatemala. They also wrote about how to go from Antigua to the City. (I previously posted a link of the blog post but one year later, youtube said I violate the rule so I have to remove it.)

???? Bus Station in Xela ➡️
???? Bus Station in Guatemala City ➡️
???? Their bus schedule ➡️
Guatemala City to Xela ➡️ 7am or 3pm
Xela to Guatemala City ➡️ 2am or 2:45pm
*Remember to confirm the time with the bus company

????‍♀️Immigration Office for visa extension ➡️
*General Directorate of Migration is the right name on Google map. Do not go to the passport office which is on the opposite side. They starts from 8am, be there early. I am not sure how their lunch time works.

✍️ Visa Extension Application Form ➡️The easiest way is to get the form from the copy shop next to the building, just Q2. (I removed my previous link as Youtube said I violate the rule.)

???? The Chinese Restaurant that I visited ➡️
Lai Lai has very nice Dim Sum. Don't miss it! I ordered 6 dishes of dim sum, with tea charge and tip, Q191 ($25), enough for 2 people.

Street Market Provisioning in Guatemala for a Sailing Adventure (Ep.101 Sailing w/the Litzenbergers)

This may be one of my favorite videos! I know we aren't sailing, but part of cruising is traveling and living in different places. This means we have to get used to doing the normal everyday chores, like grocery shopping, in different and new ways. It may take hours longer to get done, but it's fun to bop around and buy fresh fruit and veggies from my local 13 year old fruit man, bread from a Guatemalan french bakery, and eat at restaurants while we watch the bustling streets of Fronteras. Hope you all enjoy!!

Budget Sailors Get Parts out of the Trash in Guatemala (Ep.99 Sailing w/the Litzenbergers)

With a bigger boat comes lots of systems and lots of little problems. The boat has been sitting for 5 years so there are issues with almost every system, including that we don't know where to find them! We delve into everything to try and get Tarka back in working order.

Ep.218 Provisioning & Boat Repairs

We get to Linton Bay and anchor and head to Sabanitas where all the supermarkets are, about 90 minutes away. But we are in for a tragedy. The supermarket does not have Oreos and Margarida's smile evaporates. It is a sad time until she brightens up and realises we can go to the other supermarket in town where yes oh yes we find the holy grail. We use up our entire budget on groceries hoping to stay away for months...we need to save up for a lift and hardstand fees and the canal crossing.
We set sail as soon as the groceries are packed and hope for some large Colombian swell to hit us during our journey. Alas this doesn't eventuate with Margarida being very thankful of that. And we finally arrive in San Blas again where I show you the best way to enter the maze of reefs is. It was a great sail but we wake the next morning to a problem no woman can put up with. Our bedroom has saltwater leaking into it so somewhere from the toe rail to the staunchions to the chainplates there is a small crack and we must find it. We both rip out the wooden trim on the toe rail and search and repair with Margarida working like a workhorse. Hopefully our repairs will do the trick.

Give it thumbs a up if you liked this episode!

Bad Mechanic Ruined our Sailboat Motor (E.93 Sailing w/the Litzenbergers)

We failed to mention that the motor is not actually running on Tarka. The previous owner had a mechanic look it over and he took it all apart to asses, but will not come back to put it all back together!!! Spencer wants to get out in 2 weeks, so this may put a damper on the schedule.

Antigua is one of our favorite cities in the world. See why.

Ep 144 | Building a Gas Locker Extension, Last Minute Jobs, Sailing Nutshell

With only a few days to go before we leave La Paz, Magnus builds a temporary gas locker extension out of pine. This will now mean that we can house the taller gas bottles which we have managed to find in Mexico.

Wendy keeps on with the sewing tasks, working on the cockpit cushions. The gallery gets a workout with lots of preserving of the capsicum and tomatoes into relishes and sauces.

Magnus continues to work on building the water maker and we fit the new enormous solar panel which doesn’t quite fit, so modifications have to be made to the gantry.

Another productive week.

Thanks for following along with our adventures.
