Welcome to VARANASI, the holiest city in INDIA and a treasure trove of DELICIOUS Indian STREET FOOD. In this episode we will be introducing vegetarian food only!

We start our day down at the ghat along the Ganges River for an early morning boat ride. We get to see the incredible shore line, worshippers dipping into the river, and the sunrise! Make sure to agree on a price prior to your ride! (250 INR for 1 hour).

Breakfast time! We headed into the ancient city to find a stall selling Varanasi style kachori (22 INR) and jalebi (350 INR/kg). Served with chana masala and in a chaotic alleyway, this was the perfect way to start the day! Next, we searched for a special winter dish known as Malaiyo (30 INR). This is a Varanasi delicacy! Malaiyo is made of milk foam flavoured with cardamom and saffron, and is topped with almonds and pistachios. It’s so light and fluffy, it almost has the texture of shaving cream!

Another Benares specialty is lassi, so we went to a stall serving some unique and beautiful lassi. We ordered 3 kinds: apple, pomegranate & banana and papaya (90 INR each). Each had a different look and taste! The Varanasi lassi is much sweeter than the others we have tried, in Amritsar and Delhi.

We were quite full and decided to head back down to the ghat to take a rest near the peaceful water. Later in the day, we ventured back into the ancient city to visit a chaat shop (which are small Indian snacks). We ordered 3 different chaats: tomato chaat, puffed rice chaat, and a spinach fritter chaat (35 INR each). All were very unique in flavour and made FRESH!

Just down the street from the chat stall, is a man serving hot buffalo milk! We ordered 3 kinds: regular hot milk (10 INR), top cream (35 INR) and sweet rabri (45). Buffalo milk is rich in nutrients and is perfect on a winter day in Varanasi. The difference is in the way he prepares the milk. The top cream comes from the thick layer created after boiling the buffalo milk. It is really light yet delicious. The rabri comes from reducing the buffalo milk until it’s very thick and adding sugar! 1 ingredient with much different textures and flavours! Have you ever tried buffalo milk?

We are back in the holy city of VARANASI in INDIA! There is a TON of Indian STREET FOOD in this city, with mostly vegetarian options. In our first episode, we couldn’t eat everything on our list, so we decided to make another delicious episode.

We started our day down at the ghats of the River Ganga and walked into the ancient city to find Lakshmi Chai Wala, a hidden gem for breakfast! These guys are making everything over charcoal! We ordered chai in claypots (10 INR / $0.14 USD), stuffed toast (40 INR / $0.55 USD), bread with butter and sugar (30 INR / $0.42 USD) and Malai toast (60 INR / $0.83 USD). The food was made fresh to order, everyone was friendly, and you can’t beat the atmosphere next to an authentic temple.

Next, we visited a neighbourhood that is renown for making traditional Indian sari, in particular, Varanasi saris. The neighbourhood is called Lallapura and the factory we visited was over 200 years old. Watching the process was quite interesting and the fabrics used to create the saris are so colourful!

It was time for lunch and went visited a nearby restaurant that is famous for Benares style vegetarian thali. Their specialty is Baati Chokha - whole wheat balls stuffed with vegetarian ingredients, traditionally cooked over cow dung and served with Chokha. The meal was delicious and affordable (275 INR / $3.81 USD for each thali) and the restaurant also features a small museum of sari making.

We wanted to sample more Varanasi chaats, and visited a famous local joint called Deena Chaat Bhandar. We ordered aloo tikki and samosa chaat (35 INR / $0.48 USD per chaat). The sun was starting to go down and there is one activity that should not be missed during a trip to Varanasi: the Ganga Aarti!

We arrived at the Dashashwamedh Ghat early to get seated before the crowds arrive. The Ganga Aarti is a daily offering for the holy River Ganga and a beautiful sight, with music, dance and fire. The Aarti starts between 6:30PM and 7:00PM, however the ghat is open all of the time.

To end our night and series in India, we decided to have a classic street food / breath freshener: paan. The vendor mixes tons of unique ingredients together on a betel leaf to create a pocket bursting with flavour and freshness. We then said goodbye to our good friend Gaurav of SWAD Official. We would like to thank him for creating this Indian Street Food series with us. We had a blast!

Restaurant Addresses:

1 - Lakshmi Chai Wala
CK 56/34 Chowk, Govindpura, Thana, Varanasi

2 - Lallapura Neighbourhood (we suggest bringing a local, or hire a guide)

3 - Baati Chokha Restaurant

World's BEST Chaat in Banaras - टमाटर की चाट | बनारस की ठंडाई | मलाई पूरी | Indian Street Food

Banaras is known as the hub of Indian street food, and if you're in Banaras your trip is incomplete if you haven't visited Kaashi Chaat Bhandar. This iconic place is another reason why people make a trip down to Banaras. The Tamatar ki Chaat served here is made with tomatoes, potatoes, boiled white peas, sugar syrup, ghee, some spices and is topped with crunchy namakpara. This dish is a celebration of flavours; one bite and you'll know what we're talking about. This chaat is exclusive to Banaras. One can also try the Chura Matar which is basically peas and beaten rice mixed together with some spices and of course ghee. Another popular dish is the Dahi Puri, that is golgappe filled with chana, yoghurt, tomato chutney and green chutney, topped with some namakpara. Kaashi Chaat Bhandar has a lot to offer, so if you're a picky eater trust us you will find something you'll like. Next we had the palak patta chaat or spinach leaves that are coated in besan and deep fried. This is then topped with some yoghurt, chutneys and spices.

One of the most popular things in Banaras os Thandai and Bhaang, so we made our way to Baba Thandai. Thandai is cold milk mixed with saffron, dry fruits, a few spices and sugar. The thick cold milk infused with the flavours of saffron and cardamom is very refreshing at any time of the day.

We then went to a shop called Rasvanti which is literally hidden in the streets of Banaras. This sweet shop has a wide variety of sweets. We tried the Malai Gilori and Rasvanti. Both these sweets have a unique flavour and texture. So if you are in Banaras, look for Rasvanti and enjoy the sweets!

Later we went for some more sweets at Shree Jee Sweets and Milk. We tried the Shrikhand which is sweet hung curd flavoured with cardamom and saffron. Another dish to try here is the rabri which is condensed milk topped with dry fruits and saffron. We then went on to have some Malaipuri.

Next, we went to Badal Thandai for some more Thandai. Unlike others we only tried the Bhaang-less ThandaI, but the most popular one has to be the one flavoured with Bhaang!

Banaras STREET FOOD Tour | BEST Street Food of India | India Food Tour

We started our journey with a beautiful boat ride and even managed to celebrate a birthday on board. These magical boat rides are part and parcel of a trip to Banaras. So if you find yourself on a holiday in Varanasi, just take a boat ride early morning and relax your senses.

We then went for a super delicious breakfast at Laxmi Chai Wala in he Chowk Area. This shop is around 80 years old is known for it's eye opening Chai and Breads. They serve Malai Toast, which a thick slice of bread that is toasted topped with a hefty layer of cream and sugar; we even tried the famous Cesarean Bread, popularly known as kambhal odha ke, which is a thick slice of bread toasted over coal that is slit in the middle and stuffed with a lot of butter. The moment you bite into this toast the butter just oozes out. These amazing breads are served with a kulhad chai, which is just the kind of tea you need in the morning.

We then tried Chhoti Kachori. It's a comparatively smaller Kachori than the ones we get in other parts of India, and is stuffed with spicy potatoes. This lovely little kachori is served with a topping of chana and green chutney. The flavour combination is absolutely scrumptious.

Later we went to Ram Bhandar for some Kachori- Sabji and Jalebi. The kachori here is more like Poori, which is served with Sabji of potatoes, chana and brinjal. Another type of Kachori served here is Chhoti Kachori stuffed with potatoes and topped with chana. You can taste the ghee in this one, which is what makes it so rich. We then packed few a jalebis and walked our way to a dahi wala. In Banaras, jalebis are traditionally enjoyed with some Dahi. The super sweet and hot jalebi goes perfect with the cold slightly sour flavour of dahi.

Us Dilliwalas are suckers for milk based sweets so how could we miss Shree Jee Sweets and Milk. We tried Mallaiyo, also known as Daulat ki Chaat here in Delhi. Here the sugar, saffron and cardamom is mixed with milk foam beforehand and served with a topping of pistachios. They even give Saffron Flavoured milk, which is just the right amount of sweetness. This shop has been serving its customers mallaiyo for 150 years, making it one of the oldest and probably the original mallaiyo shop in Banaras.

When in Banaras, Eat Paan. We had to visit a paan shop and we hit the jackpot when we discovered a 218 year old paan shop. This shop has been serving paan to generations of the same families, in fact the people running the shop have been running it for almost 4 generations now.

Banarasis love their sweets, so we had to visit one the ildest and most popular sweet shop in Banaras that is Shree Shree Ram Bhandar. We tried Magdal which is made with urad dal and has a very complicated and time consuming method of cooking it. They have been serving the Tiranga Barfi here, ever since India gained its independence in 1947. The speciality of this barfi is that the three different coloured layers of this barfi also have a different flavour, so you get three barfis in one.

Finally, we went to another iconic Lassi shop- The Blue Lassi Shop. We tried the Blueberry lassi which was also topped with cream and pistachios like any other lassi, but the flavour was to die for. The blueberry makes it supremely unique and delicious. One should definitely visit the Blue Lassi Shop for an amazing lassi experience.

Scrumptious INDIAN STREET FOOD Tour + SARNATH, The BIRTHPLACE of BUDDHISM | Varanasi, India

???? WATCH: Indian Food with 100,000 People
???? DAVID’S BEEN HERE SHIRTS & MERCH:

During my last day in Varanasi we went on an all out Scrumptious Indian Street Food tour trying all of Varanasi's famous dishes.

We started the day by visiting one of the ghats for sunrise. It was extremely peaceful and spiritual experience, a must when in Varanasi.

Our first stop on our Indian Food Tour was Malai. This is like a creamy milk, yogurt, whipping cream. It's sweet and delicious!

Stop number 2 was Puri Kachori, potatoes, tomato and a few more vegetable dish. You use a bread to eat it and it is a breakfast dish. We also had Jalebi a fried dough which is dipped in condensed sugar. To refresh our pallet we tried some Paan!

We took a quick food break and headed to Sarnath, the birthplace of Buddhism. The deer park in Sarnath is where Gautama Buddha first taught the Dhamma, and where the Buddhist Sangha came into existence through the enlightenment of Kondanna.

We headed back to Varanasi to end our Indian Street Food tour. We stopped at Deena Chat shop to try four dishes, Golgappas, Aloo Tikki, Tomato Chaat and Chura Matar. They were all so good, but my favorite was Chura Matar!

I hope you loved this Indian Street Food tour of Varanasi, and side trip to Sarnath! If you liked the video please give me a thumbs up, comment below and subscribe to my channel!
