Tour Of St. Martin (St. Maarten) / Exploring The Island On Your Own
We recently took a trip to St. Martin it was one of the stops on our Princess Cruise. This country is known for its beautiful unique beaches and has some great shopping areas. St. Martin or St. Maarten, is divided in half with one side being the Dutch side and the other side being the French side. If your cruise port is in Philipsburg, it is located on the Dutch side. We rented a Jeep for the day and toured both sides of the island. We want to give you a look at both St. Martin and St. Maarten to show you what there is to do here, some of our recommendations, and the overall vibe of the island and residents. Saint Martin (French: Saint-Martin; Dutch: Sint Maarten) is an island in the northeast Caribbean Sea, approximately 300 km (190 mi) east of Puerto Rico. The 87 square kilometres (34 sq mi) island is divided roughly 60:40 between the French Republic (53 square kilometres (20 sq mi)) and the Kingdom of the Netherlands (34 square kilometres (13 sq mi)), but the Dutch part is more populated than the French part. The division dates to 1648. The northern French part comprises the Collectivity of Saint Martin and is an overseas collectivity of the French Republic. As part of France, the French part of the island is also part of the European Union. The southern Dutch part comprises Sint Maarten and is one of four constituent countries that form the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
The Netherlands Antilles was a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The country consisted of several island territories located in the Caribbean Sea. The islands were also informally known as the Dutch Antilles.

How to get to Happy Bay [One of Saint Martin's most Beautiful Beaches]
Happy Bay is one of the best beaches on the island but unlike most of our beaches, it is not as easily accessible as the others. Either walk through private property on one side or arrive by boat. But there is another way.
Things to know about Happy Bay: There are no restaurants or bars on this beach (there is a structure though from which sometimes cold beverages are sold on Sundays) so you'll have to bring your own beverages, food and umbrella. It is the location for the Annual electronic dance music festival, SXM Music Festival, which takes place every March, and because of this beach's privacy it is preferred by nudists. The current here can be a bit strong at times.
