The City of Jamestown St Helena - to Live, Work & Explore

Jamestown is the capital of St Helena Island, a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic Ocean.

The island is tiny and very remote, it’s most notable claim to fame is that French Emperor, Napoleon Bonaparte was exiled here in 1815, where he died 6 years later.
Until recently St Helena was only accessible by ship, however, St Helena Airport began scheduled flights in 2017 and now weekly flights to Johannesburg, South Africa, keep the island connected with the outside world.

For anyone considering living or taking up a job opportunity on St Helena, this short film gives some insight to what you can expect to find in the island's capital, Jamestown.
Sampling the prestigious St Helena coffee, night swimming at the Jamestown pool, noisy street parades to celebrate the national day and spotting the colourful fish in the Castle Gardens fountain, are some of the activities to experience.
This video about Jamestown also includes shopping for groceries along Main Street, catching a taxi, climbing Jacob's Ladder and target shooting at the Jamestown Rifle Club, plus lots more!
We also include an overview of Jamestown’s history and how it came to be a city.
Filmed & produced in early 2023

What To Do in St Helena

This trip to the St. Helena took place from 15 - 18 February 2020, before the major current travel restrictions. I do not encourage anyone to travel now. #StayHome. Here's a video with my thoughts on the current situation:

St. Helena may just be one of my favorite places I’ve ever visited. The Saints are some of the kindest people I’ve ever come across in my travels. Because I had such a great time, I thought I’d try something different for this video about St. Helena.

I normally make videos here on YouTube about airlines, but perhaps the most amazing part of aviation are the places it can take. Places like St Helena. So, in this video about St Helena, I’m trying a little experiment: Let’s check out some things on the ground in St Helena! We’ll explore some of the highlights of St. Helena and some of what I enjoyed while I was here. Let me know what you think about this experiment by leaving comments. I always appreciate feedback! And next week, I’ll post a more typical video about my return to the mainland.

St. Helena is home to epic history, out-of-this-world scenery, and incredible opportunities for intreprid travelers.

We’ll explore the infamous Jacobs Ladder, Napoleon’s two residences on St. Helena, some of the hiking available on the island, as well as some of the most amazing vistas.

This is my first attempt at a video about something unrelated to aviation, so I’d appreciate your feedback. I think it’s probably fair to say I need to expand my coverage of things like accomodations and food if I continue with this. Also, maybe I’ll do this on a separate channel. Anyway, let me know what you think of this first attempt. And, also, let me know if you’re heading to St. Helena once we can all travel again!

St Helena Island Carnival 2020

The biennial Carnival through the streets of Jamestown, St Helena, organised as a fund-raising event for the Cancer Support & Awareness charity.
This Carnival was remarkable in that it was held on 31 October, 2020, while the world was still struggling to cope with the Covid-19 pandemic, however, St Helena had been fortunate to remain one of the very few places with a Covid-free status, thus allowing this large gathering to take place.
Note the nine ladies leading the Carnival are 9 of the 12 who took part in Miss St Helena, one week earlier, including the winner, Latisha Fowler.

Visit St Helena Island

The island is possible to visit only by plane from Johannesburg. There is one flight, once a week, from one city. J o h a n n e s b u r g!

We weren't allowed on the ISLAND!? ???? | St Helena Island | Atlantic Crossing

EP 163:We weren't allowed on the ISLAND!?
After a 1200nm sail from Walvis Bay, Namibia to ST Helena Island.. we were hoping by some miracle we were allowed on the Island.. That was not the case and were told under strict instructions not to get off the boat at all! We were allowed to dive around our boat and clean the hull and check our mooring but not swim out to far. We weren't allowed to visit any other boats.. even Patricia and Allen who have sailed with us from Cape Town to Namibia and now ST Helena.. but we were grateful that we could fill up with diesel and water and get some sort of fresh provisions.. although it was damn expensive.

The swimming and diving was absolutely incredible and the water was as blue as blue can be. Since we couldn't go ashore.. we took the drone up to check out the island from a cell phone screen... it was better than nothing. We had some steering problems and had a bit of air in the system. We couldn't do a proper bleed at sea so got down to bleeding the system thoroughly and serviced our engines while we were at it. Then it was a 700nm journey off to Ascension Island.

See ya next week!! Thanks for watching, don't forget to subscribe below if you haven't already & give us a big thumbs up as well as share this with all your friends & family!
