St John's Antigua Cruise Port Tour (4K)

Tour the Antigua Cruise Port Terminal area at St John's. We were on the MSC Divina cruise ship docked at the Heritage Quay terminal along with the Royal Caribbean Jewel of the Seas. If you are looking for things to do other than shopping- we took a short taxi ride to visit the nearby Fort James beach (see our video here: ), then walked around the port area, which included the historic Redcliff Quay Cruise Pier where the Seven Seas Explorer and the Pullmantur Zenith were docked.

There are plenty of nice views out towards the cruise ships. It is also a lively scene with local Antiguan performers singing, dancing, and even doing the Limbo while on fire, and spitting fire, lol.

There were a ton of shops & restaurants/bars at port including Diamonds International (surprise suprise), Fred's Belgian Waffles & Ice Cream, Big Banana, St Johns Antigua Harbour View Bar & Cafe plus much more. There was even a casino (King's Casino).

As an added bonus, we included our cruise ship sail-away from Antigua video- enjoy!

This was from our December 2017 cruise aboard the MSC Divina.

Walking in St. John's, Antigua - What to do on Your Day in Port

This is a quick video of our walk through the port of St. John's, Antigua. We were on a 7 day Southern Caribbean cruise on Royal Caribbean's Adventure of the Seas. Antigua is a beautiful island. In this video we walk up to St. John's Cathedral also known as the St. John the Divine, the Cathedral Church of the Diocese of North Eastern Caribbean and Aruba. It is an Anglican church perched on a hilltop in St. John's, Antigua and Barbuda. The present cathedral with its imposing white twin towers was built on a fossilized reef, in 1845, and is now in its third incarnation, as earthquakes in 1683 and in 1745 destroyed the previous structures. The iron gates on the south face of the church are flanked by pillars displaying lead Biblical figures of St John the Divine and St John the Baptist. They were taken by HMS Temple in 1756, from a French ship destined for Martinique.

Antigua is one of the 2 major islands that make up the Caribbean nation of Antigua and Barbuda. Ringed with coral reefs, the island is known for its many sandy beaches. Set along English Harbour, restored Nelson’s Dockyard, which Admiral Horatio Nelson made his base in the 1780s, includes a marina and the Dockyard Museum. Trails lead up to Shirley Heights, a former military lookout with panoramic views.

St John’s, Antigua - Our Day in Port

8 hours in St John’s with no paid excursions. Plenty to do right? It’s a bustling place with plenty to distract you. Getting away from the cruise terminal provides a more authentic Caribbean vibe. And of course Antigua is famous for its many beaches so a short cab ride for a few dollars took us to the nearby Fort James beach to sip rum punch and chill on a luscious sandy beach.

ANTIGUA DAY TRIP | WORTH IT? | Royal Caribbean Voyager Of The Seas????

Antigua, a picturesque island located in the Eastern Caribbean, is a popular destination for tourists seeking a tropical paradise getaway. With its pristine white sand beaches, crystal-clear turquoise waters, rich history and culture, and warm hospitality of its people, Antigua offers a wide array of experiences that leave visitors with lasting memories. From exploring historical sites and indulging in water sports to immersing in the local culture and savoring the delicious cuisine, tourists can expect a diverse range of activities and attractions when they visit Antigua.

One of the main draws of Antigua is its stunning beaches. With over 365 beaches, one for each day of the year, visitors can look forward to enjoying soft powdery sands and gentle waves lapping at the shore. From popular tourist hotspots such as Dickenson Bay and Jolly Beach to secluded coves like Half Moon Bay and Darkwood Beach, there is a beach to suit every traveler's taste. Snorkeling, scuba diving, kayaking, paddleboarding, and sailing are just some of the water sports that tourists can partake in to fully appreciate the pristine waters of Antigua. The calm and clear waters are also ideal for swimming and lounging, allowing tourists to unwind and soak up the tropical vibes.

In addition to its natural beauty, Antigua boasts a rich history and culture that visitors can explore. One of the must-visit sites is Nelson's Dockyard, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the only working Georgian dockyard in the world. This historic site, named after Admiral Lord Nelson, offers a glimpse into Antigua's colonial past and its importance as a British naval base in the 18th century. Visitors can explore the restored buildings, stroll along the marina, and learn about the island's maritime heritage at the Dockyard Museum. Another historical landmark worth visiting is Betty's Hope, a former sugar plantation that has been converted into a museum. Here, tourists can learn about Antigua's history of sugar production and the legacy of slavery on the island.

Immersing in the local culture is another highlight of visiting Antigua. The island has a vibrant arts scene with numerous art galleries, craft markets, and cultural events that showcase the talents of local artists and artisans. Tourists can browse for unique souvenirs such as handcrafted pottery, jewelry, and textiles, or watch local artisans at work as they create traditional handicrafts. For a taste of Antigua's music and dance, visitors can attend one of the island's lively cultural festivals, such as Carnival or the Antigua and Barbuda International Literary Festival. These events offer a glimpse into the island's rich cultural heritage and provide opportunities for tourists to interact with the friendly locals and learn about their way of life.

Antigua is also a paradise for food lovers. The island's cuisine is a fusion of African, British, and Caribbean influences, resulting in a unique culinary experience. Seafood is a staple in Antiguan cuisine, with freshly caught fish such as snapper, mahi-mahi, and lobster being popular choices. Local dishes such as saltfish and fungi (a cornmeal-based dish), ducana (grated sweet potato dumplings), and pepperpot (a hearty meat stew) are must-try delicacies that offer a taste of authentic Antiguan flavors. Tourists can dine at a variety of restaurants ranging from casual beachside shacks to upscale establishments that offer gourmet dining experiences. Many restaurants also feature live music, creating a lively and festive atmosphere for diners to enjoy.

St John’s - Antigua - Walking Tour

A short stop in St John’s Antigua. This was unplanned and even our booked excursion made through the cruise provider was cancelled at under an hours notice. It was never made clear why the ship had to leave so early but this did limit what we could do in the short amount of time we had.

We know there are lots of exciting bays and beaches to explore not far from St John’s but we had just enough time to walk the bustling streets of the town and explore the lovely cathedral too.

Checkout our other Antigua video made in 2018 where we made the most of a longer day ashore at Fort James beach.

St John's, Antigua - A Day in the Capital of Antigua & Barbuda ????????

A visit to St John's, the capital of Antigua & Barbuda and a popular port of call for Caribbean cruise ships ????

St John's is the main port on the island of Antigua so most cruise ships visiting the country dock in St John's Harbour. The cruise port is called Heritage Quay and there's lots of great shops and restaurants.

St John's, Antigua was a port of call on our Caribbean cruise aboard the MSC Seaview. Lots of cruise lines other than @msccruises stop in Antigua.

Heritage Quay leads you straight out into downtown St John's. It's a small enough city so it's easy to explore on foot. The locals are friendly and they won't bother you trying to sell you things like in other ports.

Antigua & Barbuda is an independent country but it's still a British Commonwealth Realm. English is the main language and most shops and restaurants will take US dollars.

There's a few things to see in St John's. The Museum of Antigua & Barbuda is small but interesting. The Cathedral of St John the Devine is worth seeing. It dominates the skyline of St John's. There's a market near the VC Bird Statue on the main street that's really vibrant and to me, was exactly what I was expecting the West Indies to be like!

One of the highlights in Antigua is Nelson's Dockyard or the Dockyard Museum which tells the story of British naval history in the Caribbean. We didn't get to go which is a shame. Instead, I tried to walk to Fort Barrington but got a little lost! The era of pirates in the Caribbean has always fascinated me and I love visiting the islands and seeing places that were part of that intriguing part of history.

I enjoyed walking around St John's, Antigua and taking in the atmosphere. It's a vibrant city and the people are friendly. There's not a whole lot in the way of landmarks and attractions but it's worth seeing. Further afield in Antigua, there's beaches, rainforests and the Naval Dockyard Museum to explore. If you're just up for staying in the cruise port though, I'm sure you'll enjoy St John's, Antigua ⚓️

This beautiful island also offers great opportunities for hiking, site seeing and snorkeling. ***Antigua reopened its borders on June 4, 2020***

In this vlog we leave the Celebrity Summit to take a taxi to Galleon Beach. While the day was cloudy, we enjoyed our time on Antigua relaxing on the beach, hiking around the Pillars of Hereclues and Mermaid Gardens and snorkeling around a sunken ship.

Galleon Beach is in the Shirley Height's area and offers a hiking trail to the best view on the island, along with a local beach bar.

Keep watching as we drive across the island to see the beauty of Galleon Beach, the incredible rock formations around the Pillars and the remains of a sunken ship. We also get to try the local beer!

Fun Fact: Antigua is also known as Wadadli among the natives, which is the name of the local beer.

Fort James Beach Antigua DIY Excursion (4K)

It was easy to get a taxi at the St Johns Antigua cruise port to the nearby Fort James Beach. We did it during our December 2017 Caribbean cruise aboard the MSC Divina. It was $25 roundtrip- the driver dropped us off and then came back about 2 hours later to pick us up. The drive was about 15 minutes from the cruise terminal to the beach.

Fort James beach was quite nice. The beach was clean and it was certainly not overcrowded. You can even do horseback riding on the beach. This is certainly a do it yourself excursion that we recommend if you are visiting Antigua for the day on a cruise ship. We would rank it right up there with Dickenson Bay Beach, though Valley Church Beach was quite spectacular when we were there years ago.
