St Helena Island Carnival 2020

The biennial Carnival through the streets of Jamestown, St Helena, organised as a fund-raising event for the Cancer Support & Awareness charity.
This Carnival was remarkable in that it was held on 31 October, 2020, while the world was still struggling to cope with the Covid-19 pandemic, however, St Helena had been fortunate to remain one of the very few places with a Covid-free status, thus allowing this large gathering to take place.
Note the nine ladies leading the Carnival are 9 of the 12 who took part in Miss St Helena, one week earlier, including the winner, Latisha Fowler.

The City of Jamestown St Helena - to Live, Work & Explore

Jamestown is the capital of St Helena Island, a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic Ocean.

The island is tiny and very remote, it’s most notable claim to fame is that French Emperor, Napoleon Bonaparte was exiled here in 1815, where he died 6 years later.
Until recently St Helena was only accessible by ship, however, St Helena Airport began scheduled flights in 2017 and now weekly flights to Johannesburg, South Africa, keep the island connected with the outside world.

For anyone considering living or taking up a job opportunity on St Helena, this short film gives some insight to what you can expect to find in the island's capital, Jamestown.
Sampling the prestigious St Helena coffee, night swimming at the Jamestown pool, noisy street parades to celebrate the national day and spotting the colourful fish in the Castle Gardens fountain, are some of the activities to experience.
This video about Jamestown also includes shopping for groceries along Main Street, catching a taxi, climbing Jacob's Ladder and target shooting at the Jamestown Rifle Club, plus lots more!
We also include an overview of Jamestown’s history and how it came to be a city.
Filmed & produced in early 2023

Miss St Helena 2020 - Attention Seeker 4-week Programme

Miss St Helena 2020 began with a 4-week programme of activities, events and workshops to help the 12 contestants prepare for the pageant itself.

This 4-week programme was only introduced for the previous event in 2018 (Miss St Helena is a biennial event) by the lead coordinators & sponsors of the event, the Inside St Helena App.

Following the ladies throughout the programme, this video is a behind-the-scenes peek at the range of activities, including runway walk training sessions with JJ Dancoisne-Martineau, interview workshops, a photo shoot with What The Saints Did Next, target shooting at the Jamestown Rifle Club, a food decoration workshop with former RMS St Helena chef Cyril Joshua, a conservation themed post box walk on Diana's Peak National Park, a Zumba fitness session with Sara Thomas, make-up & styling tutorial workshops with Bliss Hair and also Essence Beauty Salons.

Introduced as part of the 2020 programme was a special mini-version of the Miss St Helena show, performed for elderly residents of the CCC care home, a week before the main show.

Highlight of the 4-week programme was once again the Business Tour. Over two days the contestants visited 15 different island organisations and businesses, including for the first time, small, private-sector businesses. The stops for Day 1 on the tour included SHG's Bio-Security section on the Jamestown wharf, the Connect Saint Helena power station in Rupert's Valley, the St Helena Airport, Millennium Forest, Bradley's Quarantine Camp, ENRP's agricultural fields in Longwood and Harkate self-catering accommodation in Gordon's Post.
Day 2 visited Island Images' Sandwich Bar in the Jamestown Market, Sure South Atlantic at the Briars, Solomons piggery and coffee plantation operations in Sandy Bay, Beauty Spot and Cutting Edge salons at Ladder Hill, SHAPE Recycling Centre in New Ground and A&D's Half Tree Hollow Mini-Mart.

The 4-week programme concluded with the Miss St Helena pageant itself, held at Prince Andrew School hall on Sat 24 Oct, 2020.

We weren't allowed on the ISLAND!? ???? | St Helena Island | Atlantic Crossing

EP 163:We weren't allowed on the ISLAND!?
After a 1200nm sail from Walvis Bay, Namibia to ST Helena Island.. we were hoping by some miracle we were allowed on the Island.. That was not the case and were told under strict instructions not to get off the boat at all! We were allowed to dive around our boat and clean the hull and check our mooring but not swim out to far. We weren't allowed to visit any other boats.. even Patricia and Allen who have sailed with us from Cape Town to Namibia and now ST Helena.. but we were grateful that we could fill up with diesel and water and get some sort of fresh provisions.. although it was damn expensive.

The swimming and diving was absolutely incredible and the water was as blue as blue can be. Since we couldn't go ashore.. we took the drone up to check out the island from a cell phone screen... it was better than nothing. We had some steering problems and had a bit of air in the system. We couldn't do a proper bleed at sea so got down to bleeding the system thoroughly and serviced our engines while we were at it. Then it was a 700nm journey off to Ascension Island.

See ya next week!! Thanks for watching, don't forget to subscribe below if you haven't already & give us a big thumbs up as well as share this with all your friends & family!

Where is St Helena Island Island. One of the most isolated inhabited islands in the world

Where is St Helena Island. We are often asked this question and love telling the story. So we decided to make a short video showing where St Helena is, how to get there and why you want to go.

If you would like to find out more about St Helena, please subscribe to your channel as we have loads more for you to enjoy!

Measuring just 47 square miles or just 10 x 5 miles wide, it's located a little more than 1,200 miles from the coast of Africa, and 2 and half thousand miles from the South America. Home to around only 4-5 thousand friendly souls. With an estimated 20,000 or so Saints around the world. Saints is what people who come from St Helena are called. And that’s why we call yourselves The Saint Cooks.

We’re British citizens. As St Helena is one of the 14 British overseas territories around the world. It has been under British rule since 1658, having been discovered in 1502 by Joan da Nova for the portugese. He named the Island after Helena of Constaintinople.

Since 2017 you can now fly. From either Johannesburg or Cape Town in South Africa. It’s a morning flight taking around 6 hours to the Island, with a quick refuelling stop at Walvis Bay in Namibia. And then its a 4 hour return flight back to South Africa. Typically flights are every Saturday, and sometimes on Tuesdays depending on the travel season.

On St Helena You can go and visit the oldest, living land animal in the world!
Jonathan the tortoise! Who is officially he is 186 years old.

St Helena is probably best known because the french emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. He was exiled there after losting the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. He died on the Island in 1821. By all accounts he didn’t enjoy his time as a prisoner on the Island. The houses where he stayed at the Briars and Longwood are now excellent museums which you can visit. You can also visit Napoleon’s grave in Sane’s Valley, a spot he picked myself.

Some other fascinating things about St Helena are. It has one the most expensive coffee’s anywhere in the world. Can see unique tropical scenery unlike anywhere else. Lush and stunning on the inside. And wonderfully rocky on the edges.

It is renowned for its friendliness. We Saints are very friendly and welcoming. And we like to feed you!

Thanks for watching!

Stories From Saint Helena's Past

The town of St. Helena was first settled in the mid-1800s by farmers and ranchers from the Napa Valley. The perfect sunny climate of the valley quickly attracted wine producers from other countries and by 1876 the city of Saint Helena saw its first winery begin operations.

St Helena Jamestown Netting Installation in 2008

On my latest Holiday to St Helena in early 2020 I came across a CD disc which have 5 video files on it. On inspection I found that these were of the Rock fall protection installation of 2008.

I do not know who the owner of this materiel and therefore if they wish to claim it please advise accordingly.

I edited to try and show the process flow best I could.

With the a similar exercise taking place at Ladder Hill, Upper Jamestown and Rupert's from January to April 2020, that will use a helicopter - I thought I'd share this rare footage.
