Sri Lanka's Worst Fisherman ????????

Sri Lanka's Worst Market Scammer ????????

■ SRI LANKA, KANDY: Whenever I'm in a new city I like to check out the local markets to see what goods are for sale and how much they cost. I generally don't care much for the price (whether I overpay or not) on these occasions as I'm happy to help out the local vendors who toil there day in and day out. But even I have my limits.

After buying some socks at a pretty decent price at at the first market stall I entered I decided to go on a little shopping spree. It was then that I ran into the biggest con artist I've ever meet in any market worldwide!

Sri Lanka’s Worst Chef ????????

■ SRI LANKA, HIKKADUWA: New year's eve for Sri Lankans doesn't fall on December 31st, but April 14th. The occasion is marked by a family feast with some rather unique sweets that are prepared in the days before. Having gotten a thorough insight into what Sri Lankan villagers eat in the last 3 weeks of the year, I was eager to see what they cook up to mark the beginning of a new one.

More importantly I was eager to see if I could become a Sri Lankan Master chef. Needless to say things didn’t go according to plan....... ????????????‍♂️

Avoid this tourist SCAM in Colombo, Sri Lanka. ????????

When travelling in Sri Lanka as a foreigner you'll no doubt be approached by men who try to appear as friendly citizens. They will attempt to coax you to somewhere, such as a beautiful temple that you must go and see. Watch as this man follows me through the streets, desperately trying to convince me to go see the (fake) Tsunami Temple, despite me showing zero interest in it.

These scammers and their cheap tricks are not representative of the genuine good people of Sri Lanka. Unfortunately, as foreigner, they will be seeking you out so it would be easy to think that every local is bad when in fact it's a very small number of bad people.

Avoid this man in Sri Lanka! ????????

■ SRI LANKA, COLOMBO: Be careful he is a bad man, they kept repeating as I wandered around a vegetable market on the outskirts of Colombo. Then 'the accused' told me that the people who told me to avoid him were bad themselves. Who was I to believe?

Intent on not making a hasty decision I decided to wait it out and see as this was a unique market experience unlike no other.

Pakistani Police Bust Me... Eating Fish! (A Warning for Tourists)

Can't a man just vlog and eat fish in peace in Pakistan? While eating in the Sikh holy city of Nankana Sahib, an unidentified security service agent finds me in a restaurant and reports me to the local Police station. Then a Punjab police officer sits next to me and forces me to ride back to my hotel with him.

According to that Punjab police officer, the protection of foreign tourists is their responsibility. However, I don't think there's any rule like that in Nankana Sahib. The only places that require you to travel with a security guard in Pakistan are, as far as I know, southern Punjab (below Multan) and Balochistan.

If you're going to Nankana Sahib, read my travel guide

This man won't leave you alone! ????????

■ SRI LANKA, HAPUTALE: After unsuccessfully trying to find something that looked edible and unlikely to make for a troublesome return bus journey to Ella, I opted for the safety of a Snickers and Mars bar. With my newfound sugar high it was time to check out the local Haputale market.

Perched high on a cliff side adjacent to the train station, this market offers stunningly high views and correspondingly low prices. A rare combination. So just how cheap is this market and what do they sell here? Why is the Yes Man of Haputale following me? And did I manage to escape the Yes Man of Sri Lanka in the end?

Don't Trust This Man in Colombo, Sri Lanka ????????

Avoid these guys who stalk tourists and then try to take you on a tour. For sure you're going to get scammed, cheated and ripped off. Best to figure out where to go by yourself and then use a local ride hailing app like PickMe to get there.

The Fine White Wine Man ????????

■ SRI LANKA, KANDY: After a brief drive to the nearest town called Ukuwala, I asked around for the nearest store selling entertaining beverages. My plan was to simply film a minute or two of interacting with the shop owners before driving back to my hotel. That was until I ran into Sri Lanka's fine white wine man!

■ Follow me on Instagram for daily updates from the road:

I had a $1000 Cup of Tea ????????

■ SRI LANKA, ELLA: Sri Lanka is a land of opportunities. Yet, despite actually doing my utmost to meet local entrepreneurs and established business owners I found it incredibly difficult do just that. But whilst on a long drive though the mountains and tea plantations of Ella I finally stumbled upon one by pure accident.

What he told me was a mighty impressive story of how he'd taken the leap to open his own little tea shop at the age of 26. Is this man Sri Lanka's next Ceylon tea millionaire? This called for a full-scale Harald investigates!

Why Foreigners Don't Trust Indians in India (Tourist Trap Scam)

Kerala's famous Chinese Fishing Nets are the site for a popular sympathy scam that's taking advantage of foreigners. The fishermen pretend to be friendly locals and invite you onto their fishing nets, only to ask you for a donation!

This is precisely why a lot of foreigners are worried about meeting Indians on the street in India. They've had too many bad experiences with scammers who they thought were friendly locals. Scammers in India see foreigners as walking ATMs that they can manipulate into giving a lot of money.

Travel safely and confidently in India with my Quick-Start Safety Guide at

In some cases of this fishing net scam, the fisherman will take your photo and then not give your camera back until you pay them enough money. Many foreigners have been caught up by this scam.

It's a misconception that scams aren't taking place in South India. In most cases, local Indians have no idea these scams exist because they don't frequent their city's tourist attractions and aren't targeted by scammers.

Sri Lankan Master Chef's Day ????????

■ HARALD INVADES HOODIES:

■ SRI LANKA, GALLE: Before the steamed vegetables and fried fish arrives at your dinner table at Galle's five star hotel restaurant, Le Grand, they were sourced locally two different fresh markets nearby. These places can be highly entertaining and chaotic when you go alone. So I decided to take Le Grand Galle's master chef up on his offer to join him on his morning round to them both.

After procuring the ingredients it was back to the kitchen to see how it all comes together before sitting down on the edge of the Indian ocean for a most unique five star dining experience.

Sri Lanka Sea Turtle Savior ????????

■ SRI LANKA, GALLE: Looking for things to do on the outskirts of town in Google Maps, I came across a Sea Turtle sanctuary operation. A family, with the help of volunteers and donations, have set up Sea turtle shelter on the beach where they nurse injured sea turtles back to health as well as rescue newly laid eggs from the dangers that lurch on the beach.

They dig-up and collect thousands of eggs and re-bury them within a fenced area, nursing them until they hatch. Then they set them free back in the ocean. They also help sea turtles damaged by fishing nets and propellers heal from their injuries (when possible).

Join me as I tour their facilities north of Galle city on Sri Lanka's southern coastline and get a fascinating look into this incredible operation.

Sri Lanka's Sigiriya Castle Ruins ????????

■ SRI LANKA, SIGIRIYA: After locating the entrance and bypassing the Japanese tour group I was ready for a brief climb to see the famous 1600 year of frescos and scale the summit of the Sigiriya rock. Initially I thought it would be a brisk 10 ascent. I was wrong....

Fish Market in Negombo, Sri Lanka

Fish Market in Negombo town, Sri Lanka 2015
Negombo made its start as a fishing community, and fishermen today continue to hawk their wares on the city’s sandy shores. Starting from as early as 4AM, fishing boats begin to make their way to the beach laden with that morning’s catch. Shrimps, crabs and lobsters are hunted at the famous Negombo Lagoon, while fresh fish is hauled in from the waves of the Indian Ocean.

How I Became Sri Lanka's Greatest Rickshaw Driver

■ SRI LANKA, COLOMBO: My 2nd day in Colombo I ran into a great Tuk-Tuk driver who upon driving me around for a few said he'd be happy to show me his family and home. This was an opportunity I could not miss. His house turned out to be about two hours drive outside of Colombo though. To make the time go faster he suggested I try some local Sri Lankan lemon rum.....

Sri Lanka Village Food: Pancakes ????????

■ SRI LANKA, HIKKADUWA: Before leaving my luxurious hotel, where the food was nothing short of superb, I expected my new life in a tiny Sri Lankan village in Hikkaduwa would be somewhat difficult when it comes to food. I couldn't have been more wrong. My neighbors, who own the house I'm staying in, have cooked up one delicious meal after another for the entire duration of my stay.

So what's my favorite dish thus far? It's hard to pick just one but Sri Lankan pancakes are easily in the top 3. So how are they made and what do these delicious pancakes look like?
