Homemade Raft Boat Made With Boxsprings and Water Bottles Test Float
This is a raft made with 3 discarded boxsprings that we filled with 1200 empty water bottles. We used chicken wire to secure the boxsprings and prevent, in the event the material rips, bottles falling out everywhere. We also left the top boxspring empty, cut a hatch in the top of the deck for storage. This video does not show the wire or deck. it is just the test float. We plan on living on this boat for 3 days while we float down the Meremac River. We plan on documenting the trip and posting it this June.
We Built the Raft and It Floats! Awesome DIY Raft from Storage Bins and Plywood Step-By-Step
It’s construction day for our prototype raft! After a visit to the home supply store, we get to work framing the raft and attaching the Storage bins for flotation. This video goes step-by-step explaining how and what we did. At the end, we take the raft on a sea trial to see if it floats. Spoiler alert: it does! However, there were a couple of moments when we thought we were going to get wet!
This raft definitely needs to be bigger if we are going to successfully float down the Congaree River and later the Mississippi. At least another section and probably two more to make the raft 8‘ x 12‘ is going to be optimal.
We learned a ton during this construction. Drilling pilot holes is best practice when joining the 1x4 lumber. Otherwise, the wood is likely to split. The blocks that go in the inside corners can’t be bigger than 1 1/2“ x 1 1/2“ or the storage tubs won’t fit in the space. We used a 1x4 as a saw guide while ripping the plywood into strips. Those strips are 4” wide, 16”, 8” for the center, another 16”, and another 4”. The widths don’t have to be precise. The two edge strips and the strip down the center will be attached to the frame. The two 16-inch strips will simply rest on top of the frame and not screwed down so they can be removed to allow access to the storage bins underneath where gear and provisions will be stored.
Overall, we were very pleased with this outcome. The do it yourself raft is absolutely a viable concept and once we duplicate the process and add two more sections, we feel this will be a stable craft that will serve us well during our 45 mile journey down the Congaree River.
My Pipe Raft Project
This is my prototype plastic pipe river raft, powered by a 6.5hp Harborfreight Predator motor and mounted on a mud motor rig.
After a little more tweaking, we should be able to make a 26' raft with 6 pipes.

A Look at Plastic Boats ( Home Made Plastic Drum Boats)
We took a day out of our busy life to go look at boats made from plastic drums. They had 4 different ones for sale that they made. some with motor and some with out. One even had two motors in it, one for back up if the there one quit. There's lots of these boats in Thailand but its new to the Pi. well thanks for watching Eric's Adventure's. and as always stay cool and stay sexy.

Pontoon adjustment and steering testing 1
Fine tuning the pontoons and testing new actuator steering system. The slower speed of this actuator makes it really easy to steer and adjust to a straight course.
Pontoons adjusted for minimum drag on rear of Pontoons with pontoons increasing water contact as needed for greater stability when water conditions or uneven load in boat comes into play. First test produced excellent results. More test to follow.

How Much Weight Can One 18-Gallon Bin Support?
We conduct a test to determine how much weight a single 18 gallon Sterilite storage bin can support. Logic would say that if 1 gallon of water weighs 8 pounds then 18 gallons would weigh 144 pounds and that would be the displacement of a single 18 gallon bin. To test this theory, we used weight plates from a barbell set to try to sink the container.
Since we are using 10 storage bins, the theoretical weight limit of the raft segment is 1440 pounds. That is the point where it theoretically would completely sink, and of course we don’t want that! We believe a safe load limit is somewhere between 1/3 and 2/3 of the overall supportable capacity. We must take into account the weight of all materials including the bins themselves, the 1x4 framing, the plywood deck, any paint, and all hardware. To that, we will need to add the weight of any passengers and all additional gear.
