The Ring Of Kerry: Drive it in a Day - Best Things to See, County Kerry, Ireland

If you drive the Ring of Kerry in a day, how much can you really see? Take our road trip guide and see the top things to do in a day.

The Drive starts in Killarney National Park at Ross Castle, moving on to Muck Ross House and then the short walk from there to Torc Waterfall.
Driving out of the Park we head up into the hills and see Panoramic views of the lakes and National park at Ladies View, stopping for an early lunch.
Hugging the coastline along Kenmare Bay, there are plenty of places to pull over and take in the views.
Arriving at one of the furthest points Park Plaza we can see Skellig Michael (even though overcast) this was a famous filming location for Star Wars The Last Jedi

Continuing round the route Ballycarberry Castle now derelict and sadly not accessible close-up, but you can still get some good pictures from 100 metres away. It is also near to the Leacanabuaile Stone Fort. On top of the hill you get panoramic views of area and Castle.

It took us about 9 hours to do the drive, before starting to head for Dingle our stop for the night. From there we will tour the Slea Head Drive, and see how it compares to the Ring of Kerry.

There is so much to see and do. We have shown you just a small amount of things and really stuck to the road route. You need a few days to explore all the attractions in the centre of the Peninsula.

Killarney, Ireland

travel videos & photos at: with text, maps & links.
Driving from Dingle down to Killarney, where we walk the main streets and take a horse carriage ride passing one of the lakes of Killarney. Then on driving towards Kinsale in the south of Ireland. It's one of the prettiest parts of the country.
Click to Subscribe
Killarney is most famous for its three lakes, and the town itself is quite attractive. Killarney is the nation's most popular destination after Dublin. People are drawn here primarily for the natural beauties around in the National Park, but the town itself has developed into a major tourist magnet.
There are quite a few shops packed into a small area. Those main streets outlined in blue add up to only about 1/2 a mile so it's quite easy to walk through the center up and down both sides of the street.
One of the most popular activities here is riding in the horse carriage with some commentary by your local driver.
Killarney does have nice wide sidewalks in the downtown area with trees and some benches, and the shops each seem to be unique. It's not like going to a big shopping mall. This place has a lot of character. The center of town, marked in the red circle is the crossroads of busy streets: High Street Main and New. Cars drive down the streets, so there's no pedestrian zone as such, but the sidewalks are nice and wide, it's easy to take a comfortable stroll.

Killarney, Ireland shops, streets, pubs and restaurants

travel videos & photos at: with text, maps & links.
videos, transcripts & photos at Killarney, Ireland, in County Kerry, is a beautiful place to visit for at least three big reasons. First of all, because it's in Ireland, then there is the town itself, which is quite charming, and it's famous for the lakes and lush natural beauty all around it, part of the Killarney National Park.
So perhaps the main reason the visitors come here is for the natural beauty of the lakes and the famous ride around the peninsula called the Ring of Kerry, but here you will see that the town itself is also a great reason to come and stay and spend some time.
In this episode we are going to focus on the town will have a look at the main streets, the shops and we will take you into several of their excellent restaurants.
The pubs and restaurants visited:

Scruffy's :47 ; Hannigans 4:22 ; The Laurels 5:23 ; Cronins Restaurant 5:46 ; Danny Mann 6:25 ; The Porterhouse 6:56 ; Treyvaud’s 7:53 ; Salvador's 8:19 ; Mac's of Main Street 9:20 ; J.M. REIDY’S 10:25

Killarney is a beautiful place to visit for at least three big reasons. In this episode we are going to focus on the town we will have a look at the main streets, the shops and we will take you into several of their excellent restaurants.
More than a dozen of the pubs and restaurants feature Irish music on a daily basis, such as Scruffy's Bar.
Killarney is the most popular town in the country for visitors, outside of Dublin, and in this program you will see why.
Killarney is in County Kerry, just about three hours from Dublin by car or train.
It's a fairly small town with just three main streets, and it's about 800 meters from one end to the other. Population is just 15,000 people, and yet there's plenty to see and do. The streets are filled with really good shops, and some excellent restaurants, and a lot of pubs with food, conversation drinks and music.
Another special feature of the town is that most of the shops and restaurants are family-owned rather than being part of a big chain, and the typical big high fancy stores that you see all over the world. These shops have their own unique character and the people who work there are friendly.
Our visit happened in the month of May, which is considerably less-crowded in the summer. Perhaps one of the only problems about Killarney is that it's too popular, and it could get a little congested if you're here in the peak season of June and July. And yet the weather in the summer is really quite lovely. That's what brings people here. Ireland does not usually get very hot. Of course you're going to have some rain, the most famous element of Irish weather. That's what keeps it green, keeps the streets clean.
Killarney does have nice wide sidewalks in the downtown area, with trees and some benches, and the shops each seem to be unique. It's not like going to a big shopping mall with a diverse mix of shops, restaurants and pubs.
Cars drive down the street, so this section is not a pedestrian zone, but with this layout, it's easy to take a comfortable stroll.
Some other Irish towns have a pedestrian zone, such as in Galway, and Kinsale, and parts of Dublin, but most towns don't.
Around the corner you'll get to Plunkett Street, which is a little different – its more narrow, it's one lane, and you see people are just strolling in the road. Occasionally it is reserved just for pedestrians. It's much more friendly to people out strolling. Hardly any cars come down Plunkett and when they do, they'll drive slowly, so it's very safe.
At the end Plunkett merges into College Street, which is also a very nice retail neighborhood. Being so pedestrian friendly, it supports a nice range of shops and restaurants, and there are even some AirB&Bs that you could rent here.
We're going to drop in on a handful of restaurants and talk to the owners and workers, and get a feeling for the food and the place.

I still have more of Ireland to show you, so I'm back with part three of my throwback vlog from my trip to Ireland in 2014. Part one was all about Dublin and part two was all about County Cork, but now in part three I'm heading to County Kerry to experience some of the natural beauty of Western Ireland. This trip has been amazing so far and Country Kerry didn't let me down at all.

In this video I'll show you Ireland, County Kerry, the Irish countryside, Killarney National Park, Ross Castle, the O'Donoghues, the Ghost of Ross Castle, Lough Leane, an amazing boat ride, Muckross House, the Ring of Kerry, the Irish coastline, Skellig Michael, coastal hiking, the Bray Head Loop, Valentia Island, the rocky shoreline, the crashing waves, Skelligs Chocolate Factory, Ballinskelligs Castle, the Dingle Peninsula, Dingle Town, the Irish language, Fungie the dolphin, Foxy John's, Dingle Brewing Company, Tom Crean's Irish Lagger, Tom Crean, incredible ocean views, Prehistoric Beehive huts, and so much more!

I've had such an amazing time looking back on this trip and I hope you've had a great time following along. Make sure to check out the over videos from this trip so you can see all of my Irish adventure.

Killarney & the Ring of Kerry
For many people around the world, the Ring of Kerry drive encapsulates their image of Ireland. The spectacular scenery, dramatic coastline, colourful towns and villages and ancient archaeological treasures have been featured in postcards, film, poetry and song.

Beginning and ending in Killarney, each twist and turn on the road will reveal new sights - windswept cliffs, breathtaking scenery, spectacular lakes, rich flora and fauna, green and yellow chequered hills and unspoilt beaches.

Dingle Peninsula and North Kerry
Peace and tranquility are synonymous with the Dingle Peninsula. Life moves at an unhurried pace in this Gaeltacht area, but the local people are quick to offer you the opportunity to share their unique culture and heritage.

Uncover North Kerry and feel at home amongst the people, as every visitor has a special role to play -- all you have to do is cheer, laugh, whistle and tap your shoe in keeping with the tune to the heart of rural Ireland's beat.
