The Story of Indian Scripts - Part 1 | The cave inscriptions of Mamallapuram

Just how old are Indian languages, and which are the oldest scripts in India? Is there a mother of all scripts, in a land that is as diverse and variegated as India? What similarities or differences exist between the south Indian scripts, and do they have anything in common with the ones used in north India?

The first of this two-part video story explores these fascinating questions and more as it traces the evolution of Indian scripts over the last 2500 years. How are Tamil and Malayalam scripts related, and why do Telugu and Kannada scripts look so similar? How did Kanchipuram become the seat of Sanskrit learning in south India? This video begins from the Atiranachanda Cave Temple at Mamallapuram, where a set of ancient inscriptions reveal much about the movement of ideas between the north and south and the scripts and languages in use during Pallava times.

The Oldest Settlements in South India: The Keeladi Excavations

How old are the oldest settlements in south India? What did the recent excavations at Keeladi and other places along the Vaigai and Porunai (Thamirabarani) rivers reveal?

For a long time, it was believed that south India had no ancient urban civilisations like in the north. While the Sangam Period (dated 300 BCE – 300 CE) literature talks of a sophisticated Tamil civilisation, there was no concrete archaeological proof to back it up…until the path-breaking Keeladi excavations that started in 2015.

A series of digs carried out by the Archaeological Survey of India in a little village near Madurai unearthed artefacts dating back at least to the 6th century BCE. This included pottery fragments with graffiti marks very similar to the Indus Valley script.

But Keeladi isn’t the first or only place to offer evidence of ancient settlements in Tamil Nadu. Adichanallur, Korkai, Pallavaram, Attirampakkam and many more sites have thrown up an array of amazing artefacts over the last 100 years or so, including the oldest human tool to be ever discovered in India - a hand-axe that was discovered in Pallavaram, part of present-day Chennai. It’s only in recent years that the pieces of the jigsaw have started coming together. Archaeologists believe that many more exciting discoveries, possibilities and answers are waiting to be found at this site.

EP 1 Kanyakumari Tourist places, Things to do in in Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu,Vivekanand Rock Memorial

First day of the Tamil Nadu tour started by exploring Kanyakumari in which we explored - Vivekanand Rock Memorial, Thiruvalluvar Statue, Kanyakumari temple, Vivekanada kendra. It was a delightful experience to watch sunrise and sunset at Kanyakumari. Standing at the last point of mainland India and looking at the sea is a delightful experience.

Just in case if you missed how we reached Tamil Nadu, you can check out EP 1 BTS on Harish Bali Travels. Below is the link of the video.

We started our day in the morning by seeing the sunrise at Kanyakumari Sunrise Point. It was so beautiful because it’s the place where you can see the confluence of 3 rivers - Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal & Indian Ocean.

Swami Vivekanand Rock Memorial - After this, we headed to visit the swami Vivekananda Rock Memorial. I was so amazed to see the very big queue to get the entry tickets for the Rock memorial but we bought special entry tickets by paying Rs 300 per person to avoid the long queue.

Then we traveled for almost 10 minutes on the ferry to reach the Vivekananda Memorial.

Swami Vivekanand Rock Memorial was Inaugurated in 1970, and it was built to honor Swami Vivekananda. The religious significance of this historical place is that the rock is said to have the imprint of Maa Parvati feet, which is why it’s considered holy. In 1892 Swami Vivekananda visited Kanyakumari and meditated here.

Entry Ticket for Memorial visit - Rs 30

Thiruvalluvar Statue - we also saw a beautiful view of Thriuvalluvar Statue from the Vivekananda Rock Memorial. The Thiruvalluvar Statue is a 133 feet tall stone sculpture of the Tamil poet and saint Tiruvalluvar, author of the Thirukkural.

Ferry does not halt at Thiruvalluvar statue but you can have a clear view of this statue from Vivekananda rock memorial.

After this, we had a fresh Palm fruit juice & coconut water

Palm tree Juice - Rs 60

Then we did a 500 m Sea walk over stones and it was such an amazing experience.

Lunch at Maruthi Hotel - We had our lunch at Maruthi Hotel - A traditional South Indian meal. Overall I enjoyed the a meal lot.

Meal Price - Rs 120

Kanyakumari Lighthouse - After lunch we visited Kanyakumari Lighthouse situated right next to TTDC. we saw the beautiful view of the Kanyakumari from the lighthouse.

Kanyakumari Temple - Then we visited Bhagavathi Amman Temple, Kanyakumari. This temple is 3000 years old.

Sunset Point - After this, we headed towards Sunset Point to see the beautiful sunset of Kanyakumari. We noticed the crowd of approx 5000 people who are enjoying the sunset here.

Vivekanand Kendra - Then we visited Vivekanand Kendra which is one of the affordable stay options in Kanyakumari. We were not able to shoot there because it was full at that time.

Booking link -

Ramayan Darshana - Then we visited a gallery called Ramayan Darshana where you can get very detailed information about Ramayan. We also visited the Bharat Mata temple there.

Stay in Kanyakumari - We stayed in Kanyakumari at TTDC property Hotel Tamil Nadu which is the Tamil Nadu government undertaking

Tariff - 2688/- for double occupancy including breakfast

South India Travel Doc - Part 01

South India is the area encompassing India's states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu as well as the union territories of Lakshadweep and Pondicherry, occupying 19.31% of area. South India lies in the peninsular Deccan Plateau and is bounded by the Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal in the west, south and east respectively. The geography of the region is diverse, encompassing two mountain ranges — the Western Ghats and Eastern Ghats and a plateau heartland. Godavari, Krishna, Tungabhadra and Kaveri rivers are important non-perennial sources of water. Inhabitants of South India are referred to as South Indians. A majority of South Indians speak one of the five Dravidian languages — Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and Tulu. During its history, a number of dynastic kingdoms ruled over parts of South India whose invasions across southern and southeastern Asia impacted the history and cultures of modern nation-states such as Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia. The region was colonised by Britain and gradually incorporated into the British Empire.
After experiencing fluctuations in the decades immediately after Indian independence, the economies of South Indian states have registered higher than national average decadal growth over the past three decades. While South Indian states have improved in some socio-economic metrices, economic disparity, illiteracy and poverty continue to affect the region much like the rest of the country. Agriculture is the single largest contributor to the regional net domestic product, while Information technology (IT) is a rapidly growing industry. Literary and architectural styles, evolved over two thousand years, differ from other parts of the country. Politics in southern India is dominated by smaller regional political parties rather than by national political parties.
South India ranks the highest in terms of social and economic development in areas such as fertility rate and infrastructure; the fertility rate of South India is 1.9, the lowest of all regions in India.
