Cayenne Drone Flight: Cayenne is the capital of French Guiana, on the northeast coast of South America. Its 17th-century old town district blends influences from France, the Caribbean and Brazil. Tropical-colored Creole-style houses sit beside hilltop ruins of the French colonial Fort Cépérou, which overlooks the Cayenne River. Shops and cafes can be found on the main commercial thoroughfare, Avenue du Général de Gaulle. Place des Palmistes, at Général de Gaulles west end, is a palm-filled square surrounded by food carts. Nearby is the bright-yellow 19th-century Hôtel de Ville (the town hall). The Place Victor Schoelcher market features local spices, Amerindian crafts and Asian food. The Musée des Cultures Guyanaises focuses on the regions many ethnicities, while the Musée Alexandre Franconie has wildlife displays. The suburb of Remire-Montjoly to the east offers honey-colored beaches where leatherback turtles lay eggs, Fort Diamant overlooking the Mahury River and the 5km-long Rorota rainforest trail. French Guiana is an overseas department of France on the northeast coast of South America, composed mainly of tropical rainforest. La Guyane (prononcé [gɥi.ˈjan] ; lagwiyan en créole) est une région et un département d'outre-mer (DROM) français d'Amérique du Sud. Son code Insee est le 973. Avec une superficie de 83 846 km22, la Guyane est le plus grand département français, la plus grande région de France (plus de 15% de la surface de la France métropolitaine) et la moins peuplée après Mayotte. C'est également le département le plus boisé, 96 % du territoire étant couvert d'une forêt équatoriale qui reste parmi les plus riches et les moins écologiquement fragmentées du monde.
Le territoire guyanais fait partie des neuf régions ultrapériphériques (RUP) de l'Union européenne. C'est le plus grand territoire continental de l'Union européenne en Amérique du Sud et aussi le seul ; les autres territoires d'États membres de l'Union européenne environnant (les Antilles néerlandaises, Malouines et Géorgie du Sud-et-les Îles Sandwich du Sud) ont le statut de pays et territoires d'outre-mer et sont donc, de fait, en dehors de celle-ci.
La Guyane est le seul territoire d'Amérique Latine à ne pas constituer un État indépendant sur ce continent.
Son nom officiel est « Guyane ». L'ajout de l'adjectif « française » dans les dénominations courantes est une commodité de langage issue de la période coloniale et aujourd'hui obsolète dans la mesure où il n'y a plus à notre époque en français d'ambiguïté quant à la Guyane considérée. En effet il existe plusieurs Guyanes : le Guyana (ancienne Guyane britannique ou anglaise), le Suriname (ancienne Guyane néerlandaise ou hollandaise) et la Guyane. Elles s'intègrent au sein du plateau des Guyanes avec une partie du Venezuela, délimité par le fleuve Orénoque, et le nord du Brésil, délimité par l'Amazone.
