Serah's Lagoon Island, Malaita #voyagemakers #мандрикиянинаокеанією Vadym Ivliev UT6UD

Langa Langa Lagoon, west coast of Malaita Island, Solomon Islands. One hour trip by motorized canoe from the Auki wharf. Artificial islands set among the mangroves. Serah's Lagoon Hide Away. this is my little place. It is all handmade. This island is 25 years old, since I built it. The reason to build artificial islands comes from history, our ancestors came here earlier to save themselves from the enemy, head-hunters. They were cannibals eating each other so as to prevent being eaten or killed by the enemy they had to build islands where it would be safe
I built this island myself. You must have the correct size of the rock (coral), put them next to each other to lock it up
if there are waves or rough sea, everything will go down.
I have to make a necklace of seashells and sell them in Honiara to foreigners. So, how I make my little money to build this island

The Climate Challenger Voyage - Traditional Voyaging in a Changing Climate

A changing climate is a reality for people on small Pacific Islands. They cannot continue to sit and wait for help from their governments or outsiders. They need to show initiative and take action for themselves.
That is just what Manuai Matawai, initiator of the Climate Challenger Voyage and his crew did when they decided to build a long distance voyaging canoe in the tradition of their forefathers and sail 4000km from their homeland of Manus Island, Papua New Guinea to the end of the Solomon Islands and back.

Along the way they encountered rough seas and vulnerable communities, they entertained and enlightened coastal people on the effects of climate change and what can be done about it. They also learnt a thing or two themselves which they will take back to their island and put into practice.

Please visit the Climate Challenger blog to read more about their adventures.

Coastal village in the Solomon Islands in the 1970's. Film 32051

Solomon Islands in the 1970's. Coastal village in the Solomon Islands. From the sea we approach huts on stilts by the side of the sea. This is on an artificial island in Ganga Ganga Lagoon on Malaita. Men paddle a canoe. They wear green undergrowth on their heads. A settlement from the water. Canoe passing village. Headman. People demonstrate bows and arrows. Some children with blond hair - a natural occurrence in the islands. Woman chews betel nut - we can just see her red mouth. Feather money which is very valuable.

War Canoe and Head Hunting, Solomon Islands / ソロモン諸島 戦闘カヌーとヘッドハンティング

#canoe #SolomonIslands #PacificIslands #カヌー #丸木舟 #ソロモン諸島
War canoe paddling and performance of battle at the 11th Festival of Pacific Arts held in the Solomon Islands in 2012. Traditional war canoes called Tomoko gathered from New Georgia Island, Solomon Islands, to the capital Honiara. Tomoko was used for head hunting and slave capture until the early 20th century. Today, the demonstration of paddling Tomoko, catching a treasure necklace and head hunting is a tourism resource.

MV Bilikiki - Solomon Islands

In the midst of the South Pacific, the Solomon Islands is part of the coral triangle and home to some of the best, least visited scuba diving in the world. The marine biodiversity is stunning and the WWII history found in the wrecks leaves divers to wonder about years gone by. Furthermore, the reefs have remained healthy due to the lack of pressure incurred through tourism, all a short flight from Australia.
