Solo Female Travel - Antigua, Guatemala

x

I traveled solo to Guatemala for 56 days

I traveled solo to Guatemala for two months and here is what I have to share.

The perfect backpacking itinerary:

Arrive in Ciudad de Guatemala and either stay there for a night or catch a shuttle directly to Antigua (they are directly outside the airport, costs $15)
Stay in Antigua for a couple of nights
Hike Acatenango
Go to Xela
From Xela, you can visit Chichicastenango, the biggest market in Guatemala
To do the trek from Xela to Lake Atitlan:
At Lake Atitlan, I recommend visiting at least one or two towns around
If you like to go to the playa Monterrico and El Paredón are nice.
From Lake Atitlan, you can go to Semuc Champey (ask your hostel receptionist what is the best way, or if they have a shuttle)
From Semuc Chaampey to Flore - be ready for a long ride.
Stay in Flores for one night
Camp out in Tikal
From Tikal, you can go to Belize or return to Ciudad de Guatemala and fly out to wherever you are going.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Solo Traveling GUATEMALA - Antigua to Flores [Trailer]

The Central American country of Guatemala has been on my list for some time, from it's historical cities, volcanos and ancient history. For two and half weeks I visit Guatemala starting in Antigua and ending in Flores. I start my journey exploring the city of Antigua, then head to Xela and challenge myself with a 3 day trek, taking me from Xela to lake Atitlan. I spend a few days glamping and relaxing at Lake Atitlan and from there it’s on to Lanquin, visiting it’s most popular attraction Semuc Champey. I end my travel in Flores and check out the ancient Mayan ruins temples of Tikal. They’ll be lots of adventures, random ups and downs, good times and memories to be had as I go Solo Traveling Guatemala

Guatemala - Solo Female Travel 2022

My first destination in Guatemala was Flores and funny enough, I thought I would need a taxi to get to my hostel, Los Amigos hostel but turns out it was walking distance (over a over the water walkway that lasts 15 minutes or so depending on how fast you are with luggage/backpack) so I definitely wish I would have researched that beforehand but oh well. Nevertheless, this small beautiful island truly is tiny but filled with great color as you see in the photos and a good amount of tourists in March. I managed to meet some people from my hostel and see a circus performance out there which was decent for adults but it was more entertaining for kids and the tricks they performed were cool so I would still say it is worth attending as long as one doesn’t get upset. One of my days I went to their zoo, Petencito zoo which is a nice experience and you can see the animals while walking along a beautiful nature path and some steps. Worth visiting also to help with funding the zoo and the cute animals. Other than that, I made sure to take a whole day to walk around to see what I could and crossed the bridge that I entered from to take a look at their mall and buy some bracelets from vendors and then I went kayaking which was definitely a highlight for me and really relaxing.

Truth be told, the best things to do in Flores are kayaking, visiting the zoo and from Flores - set up a trip to do a jungle tour or visit Tikal. I fortunately found a tour guide named Reyes on Trip advisor and had a private tour where he poured his excitement and wealth of knowledge upon me and I am so grateful because it made my tour so much more enjoyable and I felt like I got my money’s worth :) Since I really enjoyed it, here is his link in case anyone wants a good tour guide out there:

As my days in Flores were nearing the end I made friends with someone I had seen while on my tour and later saw again in my hostel, Jamo! He and I had a great last day because we chatted while staring at the moon in a hammock and then little did we know, there was a club in our hostel this entire time and the reason being because it was buried away past two rooms. Definitely would recommend staying at Los Amigos hostel for a few nights to experience everything I mentioned including the club. Other than that I did get to go out to a club outside of the hostel and that was fun too, I definitely met lots of drunk people but danced away with a really cool german girl, Roshana! who I later met again in Guatemala city!

My next stop on this 2.5 week long vacation was Antigua to do the volcano hikes! While waiting for a ride, I met Kit who I ended up befriending and convincing to go on the hikes which he did! We then met Lara who was so cool and funny! Sadly she was unable to join us on the hike but we stayed in touch. Let me tell ya, Antigua is beautiful and EXTREMELY safe! I went out late at night some nights and didn’t feel as though I was in danger despites the streets being empty and quiet.

There are incredible jewelry market shops where they can make customized requests for brass jewelry if you go to the market area but more on the inside towards the back left -- Facing the volcanos side where I took that picture of that couple walking towards the volcano. There's a jeweler named Franklin who made tons of beaded jewelry for me :D and Lara got me into getting cool brass jewelry and needless to say...I became hooked ????

Now onto the HIKE! I decided to go with OX expeditions and loved the experience from beginning to end despite getting sick in the end ????. The hike itself was tough, I paid for a porter to carry my backup up and am glad I did because I definitely had a hard time on the incline since there was dust being blown in our faces and then a lot of inclines I was not prepared for especially at that time when I was not working out…I am just starting to now haha so I can better prepare myself for future hikes but that is for another time. All I remember on the way to Fuego was dealing with the changing temps and finally making it to the top and feeling like I was on an island with the way the smoke/fog surrounded us. I will admit, it was sorta scary being surrounded by the smoke/fog because I kept thinking to myself, had I done this hike on my own, I definitely would have fallen off the edge unintentionally, haha. Therefore, thank heavens I was with a tour especially when it got pitch black out there! Going back to base camp really did a number on my body, I felt exhausted and as if I had gone on a big run. However, the magic happened when we arrived back at the campsite and waited patiently for Fuego to erupt. Let me just say that I love a sky filled with stars and am a BIG fan of volcanos now and want to see all the active ones in the world--and I WILL!

Is Guatemala City Safe / Solo in the Historic District ????????

Welcome, my fellow adventurers, to the heart of Guatemala City's Zone 1! Get ready to witness a whirlwind of sights, sounds, and smells as we embark on a solo walking tour through the bustling streets. Along the way, we'll find out if Guatemala City is safe.

Starting in Plaza Mayor, we'll be surrounded by a swarm of activity - an electrifying vortex of energy that will leave you breathless. And that's just the beginning, folks.

We'll soon find ourselves in the throes of Mercado Central, a marketplace that pulsates with life and color. So brace yourselves, for this is where the true soul of Guatemala resides.

As we weave through the crowds, you'll notice something peculiar - the warmth of the people here is simply unparalleled.

Whether it's the vendors hawking their wares or the locals going about their day, Guatemalans' friendly and hospitable nature is unmistakable.

And let's remember the sheer diversity of this city - from the eye-catching architecture to the street art that seems to spring up everywhere you look. It's like a living, breathing canvas, a visual feast for the senses.

And so, as we approach our final destination, La Linea, remember this - Guatemala is a country of many wonders. Still, the friendliness of its people is truly second to none.

So come along, my intrepid companions. Let's experience the authentic spirit of Guatemala City's Zone 1 in Buffer the Tourist fashion.

Solo Female Travel - Antigua, Guatemala

My first time in Guatemala was so awesome! I visited Antigua and spent the last few days of 2016 exploring this laid-back, beautiful, colourful cobble-stoned town that is surrounded by volcanoes. I rang in the New Year 2017 in Antigua and climbed Pacaya volcano for a challenging hike up and back down. While walking the streets there I knew I wanted to go back one day and explore Guatemala even further. I found the place very relaxing and was able to unwind with other travelers.

This solo trip to Mexico City and Guatemala was unforgettable and I encourage you to get out there, solo or not, and travel this incredible world. Thank you for watching and make sure to subscribe to watch my future travel adventures!

Travel Guatemala | SOLO FEMALE TRAVELER | Ep. 40 | Antigua

Backpacked from San Pedro Lake Atítlan back to the traveler backpacker mecca Antigua, Guatemala. It felt good to be back in this beautiful Guatemalan colonial town! I was trying to come up with a travel plan for the upcoming days before traveling into El Salvador with a shuttle from Antigua. Most people skip El Salvador but I definitely wanted to see El Salvador's beaches, lakes, mountains, volcanoes and its natural beauty. Although I was a girl traveling alone, I didn't feel scared but more like excited to see a new country!

Backpacking Guatemala | SOLO FEMALE TRAVELER | Ep. 37 | Glamping in Free Cerveza Lake Atítlan

After climbing Volcano Acatenango we spent a couple days in beautiful Antigua, Guatemala and then headed to Lake Atítlan. Traveling in Guatemala is not always so easy however, and it it took us 7 HOURS to get from Antigua to the Lake... Finally we arrived at Santa Clara, a town in Lake Atítlan that is famous amongst backpackers with its Free Cerveza hostel. This legendary hostel is fun for a couple days but be aware - free cerveza might not be the only thing you might get from the hostel (read: a free hungover as well!).

Acatenango Volcano Hike | SOLO FEMALE TRAVELER | Ep. 36 | Backpacking Guatemala

Volcano Acatenango and Vúlcan El Fuego..definitely one of the top things to do & see in Guatemala! This natural wonder is one of the main attractions of Guatemala, situated near Antigua. We did the famous 2 day hike with a tour and climbed the inactive Volcano Acatenango with a group of 15 people. We camped that night and were very lucky to see volcano El Fuego erupt in the distance with lava flowing down the rims. The next morning we woke up at 4am and climbed to the very peak of the volcano to see the sunrise next to Vúlcan Agua. It was absolutely stunning and one of the best things and experiences I have ever done in my whole life. If you are in Guatemala, I highly recommend doing this volcano tour!
