Sailing Alone Across an Ocean on a 30ft Sailboat and Losing the Rudder 1000 Miles from Hawaii

Hello Friends,

This is the long format episode that chronicles my 32 day, 2300 nm passage from Los Angeles to Honolulu onboard my 1965 Alberg 30 sailboat SV TRITEIA.

1000 miles from Hawaii my rudder failed due to striking a submerged object (that was painted red). After failed attempts to secure the control lines to the rudder due to large seas and high winds I was forced to steer with a small Sea Squid drogue for 18 days.

Triteia is equipped with a vintage Sailomat Aux Rudder wind vane which helped a great deal but was far undersized compared to the large rudder attached to Triteia’s full keel. The Windvane started to fail internally soon after the rudder failure. I was able to make a makeshift tiller handle that allowed me to turn the boat to get it back on course but the self steering started popping out of gear and stopped working completely while I crossed the channel between Molokai and Oahu forcing me to sit on the transom and hand steer for the last 6 hours of this intense passage.

If you would like to read the twice + daily blog posts I made during the crossing you can find those here:

(update: Rudder Repaired May 2022 - )

MY SHORE TEAM!
A much needed shout out to my amazing Shore Team for this passage!

Some of you signed up by accidentally being related to me and the rest of you accidentally signed up because I love you, value your opinion and had your phone numbers.

David Frederick: My big brother and Executive Director of US Cyber Command for the NSA. David kept me safe with twice daily ship reports, checking on my mental health and used his army training to advise me about operating under fatigue and high stress.

Colby Thorp: My baby brother, a US marine and a padi certified search and rescue diver. Colby managed all of my accounts while I was away including the SOS email and secured a trailer for Triteia’s return trip. Thanks to his girlfriend Ashley for her help as well!

Sarah Koenig: A singer / Songwriter and One of my closet friends for the last 18 years. Sarah was only a message away with any questions I had, Google searches daily and kept my spirits up sharing all of the nice comments on Instagram and YouTube. She also looked into general delivery to Hawaii and called ahead to the Harbor Master in Oahu to confirm details for me.

Captain David Stovall: 200-Ton Masters Near Costal License Holder, Screen writer and a Texan so we are likely kinfolk. Stovall keep me updated with ships if I had questions while my brother was at work. He helped me work out the drogue steering and called BoatUS trying to get me a tow into port.

Captain Noah Peffer: 50-Ton Masters Near Costal License Holder, Professor of Nautical Sciences, Artist and dear friend. I hold Noah’s opinion as gospel and he has saved my ass on the last two passages. He is the one I bug when I am terrified.

I also want to thank my little brother Scott for checking on me, My oldest friend (since 3rd grade) Chance everything and My Buddy Dane for always being there.

I can never repay you guys and I don’t know what I would have done without you all!

Forever in your debt !

Sailing Alone from Hawaii to French Polynesia on a 30ft boat; 26 days at Sea and 2323 Nautical Miles

Episode #256 : Season 9 : The South Pacific

Hello Friends,

Well the time had finally come to move on and undertake the next big leg of my circumnavigation. I departed Kona, Hawaii after spending 9 months licking my wounds, repairing Triteia and exploring the Hawaiian Islands.

The passage from Hawaii to the Tuamotus took 26 days and covered 2323nm, which should be the longest passage of my entire circumnavigation.

I want to thank my shore team with special thanks to David Frederick and Sarah Koenig for your help during the crossing.

This episode is being released on the one year anniversary of my arrival to Oahu.

I hope you enjoy this film.

A Dream of Solo Sailing to Hawaii in a Small Boat Lost after self-steering failure

Episode # 196 : A Change of Course

Hello Friends,

Here is the story of my ill fated attempt at solo sailing our 30ft sailboat Triteia to the Hawaiian Islands.

We had pushed hard to finally live land life behind and were 2 months behind our planned departure date due to parts shortages and unexpected complications with getting our new mast installed. Our original cruising plans were for James to sail solo to Hawaii then continue on to Alaska where Camille and Mister Steady would come on board. All of the delays and the advancing summer season gave us a very tight time window on making this dream come true. This resulted in not enough time to throughly sea trail the windvane....

After days of beating into 20-30 knot winds, my self steering Windvane began to work its self loose from the boat. The threads in the housing of the windvane itself failed which presented the possibility of losing the vane into the sea or WORSE possibly damage the transom of the boat due to the massive loads placed on this gear at sea. Impossible to fix underway I made the hard call and came about and abandoned my attempt for Hawaii.

Could I have lashed the windvane and continued on? Possibly yes but my concern was once I made it to Hawaii would I get stuck in Hawaii if the vane was not able to be repaired? I also had to consider there is no quick exit from Hawaii. It is 3 weeks or a month sail from Hawaii to anywhere on the West Coast of the North America.

I had not 1 but 2 electronic Tiller Pilots as a back up and for coastal cruising in light winds but these units are, strangely enough, Not waterproof and tend to burn out very easily. So I wasn't without redundancies but anyone who goes ocean sailing knows that a windvane is the most critical gear on the boat especially so for a solo sailor.

So as with all things sailing, one must be flexible and willing to change course when necessary.

19 year old crossing the Pacific alone

I'm Garrett. I'm 19 years old, and for the last year and a half I've been learning to solo sail the Hawaiian Islands and prepping my boat, a Nor'sea 27 to travel the world. After months at the harbor working on my boat, it's time to leave the dock and sail to French Polynesia. This is a 2,400 nautical mile upwind trip and should take about 25 days.

Thanks for watching the first 11 days of my passage! I had too much footage to fit it all into one video, so make sure to subscribe to see the rest of my voyage. Also, follow me on Instagram if you want

Sailing Alone To New Zealand from Fiji on a 30 foot Sailboat and Arriving Without a Working Engine

Episode #300 - Sailing Alone Series (no.5)

Hello Friends,

This is the latest installment of my Sailing Alone Series.

On this film I sail 1100 nautical miles to New Zealand from Fiji after a full season in the islands of the South Pacific. This was easily the most challenging passage I have had since leaving Hawaii with conditions being either extremely calm or heavy weather. I was faced with days of being becalmed then days of 30+ knots of wind and rain and then back to being becalmed. This went on for the entire 15 day passage.

My engine only lasted long enough to get me outside the reefs of Fiji and after I shut it off it never restarted again. I ended up rebuilding it in Opua, New Zealand.

I hope you enjoy this latest long format film.

SPECIAL EPISODE: SAM HOLMES HAWAII BOUND on a 23ft Sailboat (HE MADE IT TO HILO! JUNE 2 2019)

(UPDATE: SAM MADE IT SAFE AND SOUND TO HILO!)

Hello Friends!

This is a special episode where I interview my friend and marina neighbor Sam Holmes who, by the time this was uploaded, departed for Hawaii in his Ranger 23 named Swedish Fish

Our regular viewers will remember him from the episode where Camille and myself sailed to Santa Barbara Island ( )

Since then Sam has outfitted his tiny 23ft sailboat for passage making including adding a wind vane steering system, solar power and more.

The day before Sam left I sat down with him onboard SV Swedish Fish and interviewed him about the trip and his preparations. Sam is a true maniac and I have full faith that he will make it to Hawaii with many stories to tell about the passage.

You can watch his progress at:

He told me off camera he will be filming the passage and after its all done giving the footage to a professional editor he knows to edit it into a long video or episodes. His youtube channel is there:

SAILING WITH SAM

In 2019, Sam Holmes and I both sailed solo from California to Hawaii, me on a 34 ft. boat and him on a 23 ft. We meet up in the Ala Wai Harbor on Oahu and sail together over to Kauai. We talk about our transpacific crossings along the way, cook, have a bowline tying contest, make music out of plumbing pipes, meet a sea lion, and explore the bay of Hanalei.
