Solo Female Travel - Antigua, Guatemala

My first time in Guatemala was so awesome! I visited Antigua and spent the last few days of 2016 exploring this laid-back, beautiful, colourful cobble-stoned town that is surrounded by volcanoes. I rang in the New Year 2017 in Antigua and climbed Pacaya volcano for a challenging hike up and back down. While walking the streets there I knew I wanted to go back one day and explore Guatemala even further. I found the place very relaxing and was able to unwind with other travelers.

This solo trip to Mexico City and Guatemala was unforgettable and I encourage you to get out there, solo or not, and travel this incredible world. Thank you for watching and make sure to subscribe to watch my future travel adventures!

Travel Guatemala | SOLO FEMALE TRAVELER | Ep. 40 | Antigua

Backpacked from San Pedro Lake Atítlan back to the traveler backpacker mecca Antigua, Guatemala. It felt good to be back in this beautiful Guatemalan colonial town! I was trying to come up with a travel plan for the upcoming days before traveling into El Salvador with a shuttle from Antigua. Most people skip El Salvador but I definitely wanted to see El Salvador's beaches, lakes, mountains, volcanoes and its natural beauty. Although I was a girl traveling alone, I didn't feel scared but more like excited to see a new country!

Travel Guatemala | SOLO FEMALE TRAVELER | Ep. 36 | Volcano Acatenango Hike

Volcano Acatenango and Vúlcan El Fuego..definitely one of the top things to do & see in Guatemala! This natural wonder is one of the main attractions of Guatemala, situated near Antigua. We did the famous 2 day hike with a tour and climbed the inactive Volcano Acatenango with a group of 15 people. We camped that night and were very lucky to see volcano El Fuego erupt in the distance with lava flowing down the rims. The next morning we woke up at 4am and climbed to the very peak of the volcano to see the sunrise next to Vúlcan Agua. It was absolutely stunning and one of the best things and experiences I have ever done in my whole life. If you are in Guatemala, I highly recommend doing this volcano tour!

Backpack Guatemala | SOLO FEMALE TRAVELER | Ep. 37 | Glamping in Free Cerveza Lake Atítlan

After climbing Volcano Acatenango we spent a couple days in beautiful Antigua, Guatemala and then headed to Lake Atítlan. Traveling in Guatemala is not always so easy however, and it it took us 7 HOURS to get from Antigua to the Lake... Finally we arrived at Santa Clara, a town in Lake Atítlan that is famous amongst backpackers with its Free Cerveza hostel. This legendary hostel is fun for a couple days but be aware - free cerveza might not be the only thing you might get from the hostel (read: a free hungover as well!).

Travel Guide to Antigua/Guatemala

In this Guatemala and Antigua travel video guide, I head down to Guatemala and explore scenic Antigua, hike Volcano Pacaya, take a road trip to Lake Atitlan (and ride a horse along its banks), then head north to Tikal, home to the capital of the once mighty Mayan Empire, where I climb the many temples that have been discovered at the site.

Solo backpacking Guatemala & Belize for 12 Days

My Route: Guatemala City- Coban - Lanqiun - Flores - El Remate (Day trip Tikal)-Caye Caulker- Hopkins - Livingston - Guatemala City (via Rio Dulce - Day trip to Antigua
Over 1000 miles with several buses, shuttles, ferries and boats.

Last year I solo bag packed Nicaragua and all the travelers I met down there were telling me how they had such a good time in Guatemala & how backpacker friendly it was. I always wanted to see Tikal anyways, so why not. The most adventurous 12 days in my life. Got pick pocket on my second night and traveled without an ATM card for the first time, relied on strangers kindness many times, was offered money, food & accommodation by ppl I just met, met lots of interesting people from all over the world, was sent money to in the wrong country, climbed up ancient ruins, drank ice cold beer in the middle of then jungle, swam in natural pools, experienced electricity a boat and a bus breaking down, hitchhiked a couple times, practiced and learned so much Spanish, was the only foreigner in many places, became and expert in riding chicken buses, was speechless admiring nature too many times, learned lots about all the different cultures within these two countries, had a travel buddy for two days, walked more than we do in America in 6 months, lost half of my body weight in sweat, ran out of money & the right currency a few times, swam with sharks and sting rays, country hoped back and forth from Guatemala to Belize , snorkeled in second biggest barrier reef In the world, filled up my bad with dozen of mangos I picked off the ground, got there right on time for a Garifuna festiva (mango festival)l, met some of the friendliest people on earth, skinny dipped at night in the Caribbean, had a cabana for two days right at the beach, had the longest days and shortest nights ever, tried helping a crying local women calm down her abusive & drunk boyfriend, worked out at the tiny soccer field in Caye Caulker, watched locals hanging out at the basketball court, felt asleep in a chicken bus and almost missed my exit and sooooo much more.

Backpacking Guatemala | SOLO FEMALE TRAVELER | Ep. 34 | Flores & Tikal

Our backpacking adventure continued from Belize (San Ignacio) to Guatemala. We crossed the border to Guatemala from Belize and got a shuttle to the island of Flores. Flores is a cute little island where most backpackers stop while visiting the world famous Maya pyramids of Tikal - the top thing to do & top attraction to see in Guatemala, for sure. We stayed in the legendary Los Amigos hostel - a backpacker hub where most traveler hatch before doing one of the Tikal tours. The hostel is one of the most nicely decorated hostels I've ever stayed at, so it is a must see ! We did the Early Bird tour to Tikal as we heard that the Sunrise + Sunset tours were BS - as you won't be able to see neither of them anyways.

Couchsurf Guatemala | SOLO FEMALE TRAVELER | Ep. 24 | EARTHQUAKE in Lake Atitlan

I continued backpacking solo in Guatemala and headed to San Pedro in Lake Atitlan. San Pedro, the backpacker party town of Lake Atitlan is a definite pitstop on the backpacker route in Guatemala throughout Central America to South America. In San Pedro I experienced my very first earthquakes (!) which were apparently the heaviest they had been in Lake Atitlan, or (Lago Atítlan) in a while.

Travel El Salvador | SOLO FEMALE TRAVELER | Ep. 41 | El Zonte

After a crazy night out in Antigua, Guatemala, I continued backpacking through Central America. I took a shuttle from Antigua to El Zonte, El Salvador. The border crossing from Guatemala to El Salvador went smoothly. I arrived in a quiet beach town where the main things to do were relaxing in a hammock or surfing. Although I was traveling alone as a woman in El Salvador, I didn't feel unsafe.

Travel Adventures Begin in Antigua, Guatemala...!

I called this Where Adventure Begins because it is the literal truth - this is where most people jump off from to visit the rest of Guatemala. From here, you can get shuttles to literally anywhere in the country, do volcano hikes, etc. I loved Antigua, Guatemala, for many reasons. It had all the modern necessities and comforts you want right before you go off on a huge adventure, but it also instantly felt like a Central American country. Women in traditional dress everywhere, crazy markets where the locals shop. Theres a reason why we began AND ended here. Check out my top five tips below! - Nathalie

(All videos filmed, written, narrated, and edited by yours truly!)

TOP FIVE TIPS
1. Skip Guatemala City altogether. It is as gross as they say. And yes you have to fly into Guatemala City, but take a taxi right from the airport. You can either flag one down on the street or hire one through the travel desks inside the airport. Either way, it should be about $30-35. Trrruuuust me on this one.

2. We stayed at two hotels, and Both were fine choices, but for different reasons. Casa Rustica was more expensive and the rooms were crazy small, but it was one block away from the main square. Don Valentino was much more modest and several blocks from the main square, but about half the cost of Rustica. Keep that in mind when booking - the closer you get to the main square, the more expensive the rooms get. Antigua is FULL of decent, low-budget hotels, so you shouldn't have a problem finding one.

3. Book your excursions well in advance, especially if you are visiting during high season. Volcano hikes, shuttles to other towns - they all fill up crazy fast, and you can't really wing this part (Believe me, we tried to book stuff last-minute, but failed almost every time. Yay.) Book through your hotel for ease, or one of the travel agencies in town. Everything in Guatemala runs through travel agencies.

4. Did you SEE those markets in the video? No, but really, did you SEE THAT? You simply cannot miss the markets. There are lots of them, so ask your hotel where they are and what days they are on. I'll be honest, there are bigger and better markets than Antigua's but if you are new to Guatemala, this is the peeerrrrfect introduction into Guatemalan market culture. They. Are. So. Fun. And yes - go ahead and buy the weird fruits you've never seen before, including that strange sweet potato fruit thing whose name escapes me.

5. In addition to the local markets, there is a big, well-stocked American style grocery store two doors down from Posada Don Valentino - go there to stock up! We got peanut butter and jelly and bread and fruits and all sorts of snacks for the rest of our trip.
