Forgotten Japanese Guam Soldier

In 1944, the Japanese sent a large naval force to invade the American-protected island of Guam. This video tells the story of the invasion, and the soldiers and civilians who fought back.

Forgotten Japanese Guam Soldier is a short documentary about the 1944 Japanese invasion of Guam, and the brave soldiers and civilians who fought back against the invaders. You'll learn about the history of Guam, the military action that took place, and the lasting legacy of the invasion. This video is suitable for students studying World War II, Guam, or Japanese history.
Shōichi Yokoi (横井 庄一, Yokoi Shōichi, 31 March 1915 – 22 September 1997) was a sergeant in the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) during the Second World War, and was one of the last three Japanese holdouts to be found after the end of hostilities in 1945. He was discovered in the jungles of Guam on 24 January 1972, almost 28 years after U.S. forces had regained control of the island in 1944.

Yokoi had spent the past 27 years eking out a meager existence in the jungles of Guam, where he’d fled to evade capture following American forces’ seizure of the island in August 1944. According to historian Robert Rogers, Yokoi was one of around 5,000 Japanese soldiers who refused to surrender to the Allies after the Battle of Guam, preferring life on the lam to the shame of being detained as a prisoner of war. Though the Allies captured or killed the majority of these holdouts within a few months, some 130 remained in hiding by the end of World War II in September 1945. Yokoi, who only rejoined society after being overpowered by two local fishermen in January 1972, was one of the last stragglers to surrender, offering an extreme example of the Japanese Bushidō philosophy’s emphasis on honor and self-sacrifice.

Titanic Survivor Claims an Iceberg Didn't Destroy the Ship

Have you ever met a person who hasn’t ever heard the story of Titanic? Unlikely. Even if you ask a 10-year-old, they’ll tell you exactly what took down the gigantic ship. However, some survivors of the sinking legend would beg to differ. Here’s one of their stories, and it has nothing to do with an iceberg.

Armenian publicist Vaghinak Byurat was 25 years old in the spring of 1912. He described what happened on his journey to America on the most famous ship in the world in his memoirs. He’s never mentioned an iceberg hitting the Titanic, and always spoke about an explosion. And if what he said was true, something must have caused that huge explosion...

???? Btw, guys, there is a cat hidden in this video. If you can spot our furry little guy, you're much more attentive than most people! Do you accept the challenge? ????

SUMMARY:
- Armenian publicist Vaghinak Byurat was 25 years old in the spring of 1912. He described what happened on his journey to America on the most famous ship in the world in his memoirs.
- In 1912, Vaghinak published some books together with his father, a famous Armenian writer. His task was to take the books to America.
- They went to bed rather late on April 14, just like on the other nights. Shortly after midnight, something that sounded like a big explosion woke everyone up.
- None of the crew members wanted to say anything, but a few minutes later it was impossible to deny that the Titanic was going underwater.
- Vaghinak put his passport and money in a little bag and tied it around his neck. The Titanic’s bow was already underwater by that time. A lot of people in this situation wouldn’t have dared to take it to the open water.
- The water in the North Atlantic that night was just below freezing, at a scary 28 degrees Fahrenheit (-2 C). The young writer felt his arms and legs go numb, and he was understandably getting weaker and weaker every second.
- Then, he bumped into something. It was a lifeboat! But it was so overcrowded they pushed the young man with a paddle when he tried to stick to the boat.
- Vaghinak woke up alive on board another ship. That ship was the Carpathia, and it was en route to New York with lucky survivors on board.
- 12 days later, a woman came into the room. She turned out to be the person who saved Vaghinak. Missis Astor told the sailors that the young man was her son, and she wouldn’t let them go without him since she’d already lost her husband on the Titanic.
- Vaghinak lived a long and happy life and, as a great storyteller, he shared what happened to him many times. Interestingly, he’s never mentioned an iceberg hitting the Titanic, and always spoke about an explosion.
- It could have been a fire, and quite a lot of people actually believe that theory, saying that coal was burning in the ship’s hull.
- Another theory that explained the explosion claimed that there was a German U-boat involved in the sinking of Titanic.

The Real Great Escape – Codename Tom, Dick & Harry

Archaeologists and veterans hunt for the tunnel the Germans never found, and reveal the epic scale of the POWs underground exploits.

On the 24th March 1944 the most famous prisoner of war escape in history took place. It was immortalised in the classic film The Great Escape, yet the real story of the mass breakout from Stalag Luft III is stranger than fiction, it was an incredible operation involving hundreds of Allied prisoners digging three huge tunnels right under the noses of their German guards. But what started off as an adventure would end in tragedy, and the rules of the game would be changed forever.

This is the story of The Real Great Escape.

Yalta 1945 - The Prelude to the Cold War by Major Gordon Corrigan MBE

The Yalta Conference, eight days in February 1945, shaped the world for the next fifty years and left a legacy that we live with still. It was the last conference of the ‘big three’ – Stalin, Churchill and Roosevelt – before the end of the Second World War. The Russians were fifty miles from Berlin, the British and Americans 375 miles. The aim of the conference was to decide the final course of war and to agree post war arrangements. The British and Americans had failed to agree a common agenda, whereas Stalin knew exactly what he wanted – and got most of it.

This is the first of two fascinating lectures dealing with the Cold War, presented by our expert guest speaker, Major Gordon Corrigan MBE.

Guadalcanal Odyssey (1975) Leslie Nielsen Part 2

On the next part of the tour, Nielsen is joined by Dr. Starck and his crew of the ship, the El Torito, and together they explore the large reef which has been the end-of-the-line for more than a hundred ships over the years, Dr. Starck and his crew leave the safety of their ship and take us on a photographic tour of the wreckage — literally walking in the hulls of the sunken ships. Seen in grand detail are P-38 fighter planes, a Japanese Super-sub, and seven 1000 ton troupe transport ships - among these is the famed Kingigawa Mara. In addition, Walter Gibbins guides the crew to an area of the reef known for its magnificent seashells and many rare specimens of shell life are shown, including the Gloria Maris, the most valuable shell in existence.

The Romanovs - an online lecture by Major Gordon Corrigan MBE

A much-loved guest speaker on the Golden Eagle train, Major Gordon Corrigan MBE, shares the fascinating history of the Romanov Dynasty in this online lecture. Major Corrigan would typically give this lecture on the Golden Eagle Trans-Siberian Express prior to our arrival in Yekaterinburg , where we visit the poignant site where the Romanov, Tsar Nicholas II of Russia, was executed with his family by the Bolsheviks in 1918.

For more information about the Golden Eagle Trans-Siberian Express journey, click here;

The Romanovs ruled Russia for 300 years. They were appointed by God and responsible only to God. There were eighteen Romanov Tsars in total, four of them were women and five of them were murdered. Nine of them married Germans, and one was German. We hope you enjoy this story of an extraordinary dynasty in an extraordinary country, a dynasty that was established in blood and which ended in blood.

WWII soldier found alive after 28 years in jungle - This Day In History

WWII soldier found alive after 28 years in jungle - This Day In History

After 28 years of hiding in the jungles of Guam, local farmers discover Shoichi Yokoi, a Japanese sergeant who fought in World War II.

Guam, a 200-square-mile island in the western Pacific, became a U.S. possession in 1898 after the Spanish-American War. In 1941, the Japanese attacked and captured it, and in 1944, after three years of Japanese occupation, U.S. forces retook Guam. It was at this time that Yokoi, left behind by the retreating Japanese forces, went into hiding rather than surrender to the Americans. In the jungles of Guam, he carved survival tools and for the next three decades waited for the return of the Japanese and his next orders. After he was discovered in 1972, he was finally discharged and sent home to Japan, where he was hailed as a national hero. He subsequently married and returned to Guam for his honeymoon. His handcrafted survival tools and threadbare uniform are on display in the Guam Museum in Agana.
