14 февраля 1972 года, страна попала в заголовки газет, когда в Койду была обнаружена «Звезда Сьерра-Леоне», третий на тот момент по величине ювелирный алмаз в мире.

Сьерра-Леоне и сегодня остается «терра инкогнита» для большинства путешественников. Здесь золотые пески поднимаются из вод Атлантики, зеленые джунгли обрамляют бухты первозданной красоты, а на востоке начинается бескрайняя полоса национальных парков и заповедников, где живут исчезающие колобусы и карликовые бегемоты.
Сьерра-Леоне, несмотря на разрушения, которые принесла стране война, быстро восстанавливается. Здесь любители дикой природы выслеживают обезьян, буйволов и редких карликовых бегемотов, а романтики полюбуются пляжами.
