So I Finally Flew on the Airbus A350...

The newest addition to Calgary's airline lineup is German carrier Eurowings Discover, which is Lufthansa's vacation airline.

They started seasonal flights to Calgary in August, supplementing Air Canada’s existing flight to Frankfurt, and will stop service for the season at the end of October.

I knew this is one flight I wanted to try while it was still around, but, there’s a bit of a catch.

About Singapore Airlines (from Wikipedia):
Singapore Airlines (abbreviation: SIA) is the flag carrier airline of Singapore with its hub at Singapore Changi Airport. The airline is notable for using the Singapore Girl as its central figure in corporate branding. It has been ranked as the world's best airline by Skytrax four times and topped Travel & Leisure's best airline rankings for more than 20 years.

About the Airbus A350 ULR (from Airbus):
With the delivery of the first A350-900ULR to launch customer Singapore Airlines (SIA), the A350 XWB Family is positioned to lead the way for new ultra-long-range operations, including on the world’s longest commercial route, between Singapore and New York. Airlines already use the A350-900 and A350-1000 primarily for long-distance flights, but there is also demand for non-stop services on extreme long-haul missions, which is why Airbus developed its new game-changing variant. The A350-900ULR – derived from the A350-900 – has an extended range of up to 9,700 nautical miles. This was achieved by integrating a modified fuel system, which increases the aircraft’s fuel carrying capacity by 24,000 liters without the need for additional fuel tanks. With a maximum take-off weight (MTOW) of 280 tonnes, the A350-900ULR is capable of flying over 20 hours non-stop, combining the highest levels of passenger and crew comfort with unbeatable economics for such distances.

So I Finally Flew Porter...

Over the years, I've tried to fly as many of Canada's airlines as I can, and one that I'd always been meaning to get around is Toronto's Porter Airlines.

In February of 2022, I finally tried them out on a flight from Toronto/Billy Bishop to Ottawa... What was it like?

So I Finally Flew Sunwing...

Sunwing Airlines is a Canadian low-cost leisure carrier and tour operator that flies over a dozen 737-800s and MAX 8s, mainly focusing on point to point flights from various Canadian cities to sun destinations.

Because of that, they don’t really do many domestic flights, so they're a bit harder to find an inexpensive flight just to give them a try.

I ended up finding a rare domestic flight from Vancouver to Toronto, and finally got to see what Sunwing was like!

With many thanks to Will for the thumbnail photo (

TRIP REPORT | SAS Rebooked Me on A350! | SAS Airbus A350 | Newark to Copenhagen

SAS Trip Report flying from Newark to Copenhagen onboard one of the SAS A350 on a beautiful spring afternoon in New York and a cold and rainy morning in Copenhagen.

What a day! Omg! What a day! I was booked on a SAS connecting flight from Newark to Copenhagen (via Oslo, so my flight out of Newark was to Oslo). The flight was scheduled to be operated on an Airbus A321Neo. Everything was absolutely normal and we even had our usual planespotting session before boarding.

It wasn't until 50 minutes before the flight to Oslo that I got an SMS from SAS saying that my flight was delayed by 4 hours (the plane had landed hours ago). I went immediately to the only SAS staff I saw, which was the CPH boarding gate staff. They told me the plane to Oslo had a hard landing in Newark and was under maintenance.

I asked if there was any chance to fly directly to Copenhagen on the SAS flight they were about to board. After many calls, the SAS supervisor changed me to this flight and she even gave me a window seat! Thanks so much to all the staff there. I had important obligations the next day and not being able to fly would have been catastrophic.

The only bad part of the change was that the seat was in the middle of the wing... so that forced me to do my best to make this video. I really hope you enjoy it. It was pretty hard to make.

All that being said, the flight wasn't bad at all. Actually, just after departure, we enjoyed the best views of Manhattan I've ever seen! It was just amazing! We flew exactly over it! For sure on a seat not over the window it would have been better... but come on! After all that happened, I guess I couldn't ask for more!

We flew towards the Northeast, heading to Canada. We left Quebec on our left and Halifax on the right. We then entered the Atlantic Ocean, flying on direct course to Copenhagen. After 5h over the sea, we finally saw some mainland. We landed in rainy Copenhagen ahead of schedule, ending an adventure I Will never forget.

About the onboard service, in the SAS GO class, only one complimentary non-alcoholic drink is offered. All the others are for purchase. A normal economy class is still served. In this case, the main meal (and the only option available) was chicken with pasta and vegetables. It came with some ham with some sauce/cream and lettuce as a starter, bread and butter, and a chocolate cake as dessert. To be honest it was quite good, especially the starter. For being an airline that is under administrating after filing bankruptcy... the catering is kept at a good level. Better than other legacy airlines in Europe, for sure.

The breakfast service was offered one hour and a half before landing in Copenhagen. Again, I was impressed: I was expecting just a tiny thing, but they offered orange juice, coffee, warm bread with butter, and salad with cheese and ham. It wasn't the best but, again, better than many other legacy airlines in Europe.

Now it's your turn!
Have you ever flown with SAS? Maybe with Austrian Airlines? Which route? Which airplane model did fly? How was the experience? Which route did you fly? Have you ever flown on an Airbus A350? Have you ever been in Newark? What do you think about the SAS long-haul experience? What do you think about crossing the Atlantic on an A321?
Lots of things to talk about! Read you all in the comments!!

About Air Canada (from Wikipedia):
Air Canada is the flag carrier and the largest airline of Canada by fleet size and passengers carried. Air Canada maintains its headquarters in the borough of Saint-Laurent, Montreal, Quebec. The airline, founded in 1937, provides scheduled and charter air transport for passengers and cargo to 222 destinations worldwide. It is a founding member of the Star Alliance. Air Canada's major hubs are at Montréal–Trudeau International Airport (YUL), Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ), Calgary International Airport (YYC), and Vancouver International Airport (YVR). The airline's regional service is Air Canada Express.

Air Canada has a fleet of Airbus A330, Boeing 777, and Boeing 787 Dreamliner wide-body aircraft on long-haul routes and uses the Airbus A320 family aircraft (including the A320 and A321 variants), Boeing 737 MAX 8, and Airbus A220-300 aircraft on short-haul routes. The carrier's operating divisions include Air Canada Cargo, Air Canada Express, Air Canada Jetz (private jet charters), and Air Canada Rouge (leisure airline). Its subsidiary, Air Canada Vacations, provides vacation packages to over 90 destinations. Together with its regional partners, the airline operates on average more than 1,613 scheduled flights daily.

About the 777 (from Wikipedia):
The Boeing 777, commonly referred to as the Triple Seven, is an American long-range wide-body airliner developed and manufactured by Boeing Commercial Airplanes. It is the world's largest twinjet. The 777 was designed to bridge the gap between Boeing's other wide body airplanes, the twin-engined 767 and quad-engined 747, and to replace older DC-10s and L-1011 trijets. Developed in consultation with eight major airlines, with a first meeting in January 1990, the program was launched on October 14, 1990, with an order from United Airlines. The prototype was rolled out on April 9, 1994, and first flew on June 12, 1994. The 777 entered service with the launch customer, United Airlines, on June 7, 1995. Longer range variants were launched on February 29, 2000, and were first delivered on April 29, 2004.

It can accommodate a ten–abreast seating layout and has a typical 3-class capacity of 301 to 368 passengers, with a range of 5,240 to 8,555 nautical miles (9,700 to 15,840 km). It is recognizable for its large-diameter turbofan engines, six wheels on each main landing gear, fully circular fuselage cross-section, and a blade-shaped tail cone. It is the first Boeing aircraft with fly-by-wire controls. It initially competed with the Airbus A340 and the McDonnell Douglas MD-11, both now out of production, and as of 2021 competes with the Airbus A350 and A330-900.

So I Finally Flew Air Canada's 787 Business Class...

Over the years, I’ve had the pleasure of flying in Air Canada’s Business Class a couple times, on various widebody and narrowbody flights.

However, those widebody flights all took place on aircraft with AC’s older “Classic Pod” seat, which is still pretty decent, but is showing its age.

So, when I found a pretty enticing deal using Aeroplan points to fly on their 787 in Business from Toronto to Calgary, I knew I had to give it a try!

TRIP REPORT | 11h in Premium Economy. Worth It? | IBERIA Airbus A350 | Madrid to Los Angeles

Iberia Trip Report flying from Madrid to Los Angeles onboard one of the new Iberia Airbus A350, in Premium Economy class, on a nice summer day.

A very comfortable flight from Madrid to Los Angeles on the Iberia A350. We flew for the first time in Premium Economy class, which made this 11h+ flight much more comfortable. However, as we'll see on the Trip Report, the onboard service was not exactly as expected on a Premium Economy class of this length.

After a nice planespotting session at Madrid T4, we boarded the A350 that would take us to Los Angeles. We pushed back almost on time and we departed shortly after from runway 14R. We quickly made a 180° turn and started our route to Los Angeles. We left Spain over Santander, at the very north, and flew towards the west Irish coast. After leaving Iceland on our right, we finally reached Greenland.

As I've said in many videos, Greenland is one of the most beautiful places I've seen on a plane. And this time it wasn't different. This time we could see the western area of Greenland, an area that is usually under the clouds. It was amazing to see the fjords, the glaciers, the frozen lakes... A truly incredible place to visit!

We then continued towards Canada. We overflew the Nunavut region and reached the Hudson Bay. From there we flew in almost direct course to Salt Lake City. A left turn set us in course to Las Vegas and from there to Los Angeles, where we landed 50 minutes ahead of the scheduled, with some thick and unexpected clouds.

Let's now talk about the onboard service and take into account that this was an almost 12-hour flight and we were in Premium Economy class.
The main meal consisted of lamb meat with cous cous and vegetables, potato salad, cold bread with butter and cheese, and a delicious cake. The mid-flight snack was some Spanish tapas (basically olives and some meat). The pre-landing snack was a ham and cheese baguette. It wasn't bad... but honestly, can't they offer a second warm meal in Premium Economy on a 12-hour flight?

Now it's your turn!
Have you ever flown with Iberia? Which route? How was the experience? Have you ever flown in Premium Economy? What do you think about the Iberia service? Have you ever been in Los Angeles? Maybe in Madrid?
Lots of things to talk about! See you in the comments!

The New Air India - A350 Inaugural Flight

I flew on Air India’s new flagship, the A350-900 inaugural flight. This is the first plane that wears the new Air India livery. It is the first of 470 planes Air India has on order which is worth $70 billion. Can Air India regain its former glory?

My Air India A350 flight started from Mumbai to Chennai. The Business Class cabin has 28 fully enclosed private suites. Followed by Premium Economy cabin which has 24 seats and Economy with 264 seats. The crew on this flight wore new Air India uniforms with bright colors.

The humanities on these inaugural flights shine! The flight was in celebration mode with many aviation enthusiasts onboard, all wishing Air India well. The new A350 is leaps and bounds ahead, a complete change from the old Air India.

Upon landing in Chennai, I remained onboard for the next sector to Bengaluru. The captain has shared that the initial domestic flights were for training purposes before the A350 being inducted for long-haul international flights. The next sector was just 40 minutes but Air India served a meal onboard, it was hot vegetarian biryani.

Air India expects to receive 5 more A350-900s by April 2024. The airline has ordered a total of 20 A350-1000s and 20 A350-900s. Until the end of Feb, the A350 is deployed on domestic flights flying to the cities of Bangalore, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad and Delhi.

A Clean Sheet Widebody: The Story Of The Airbus A350

The A350 is Airbus’s newest aircraft. Since the ending of the A380 program, the plane has also become the company’s largest offering. Unlike other recent updates – such as the A320neo and A330neo – the A350 is a new clean-sheet design. But… How did it come to be? And how has it been received by airlines and the industry?

My WORST Flight Experiences - What Happened on These Flights?

What was your worst flight experience? I recently experienced some of the most uncomfortable, expensive, and basic services on my recent flights.

I had an uncomfortable flight on Southwest Airlines to Dallas. Nothing really went wrong. Just one of those days you have no shoulder room with 3 big guys in the same row. It was beyond a tight squeeze. Southwest has a free seating policy which is more speedy but has no guarantee of seat and space. The narrower width on the 737 didn’t help of course, I think A320 may be better in my situation with a wider fuselage.

Next, I flew on Delta B717 to Atlanta. The flight time was 2 hours and there was only a snack available in First Class. This does not compare well with many international airlines which serve a full meal for the same length of the flight. It reflects the current state of airline service. The fares are much higher now but passengers are not getting more out of it.

On my recent United flight from New York to LA, I was served very basic food and the spoon was not even cleaned and checked properly. United has probably one of the worst in-flight catering over the years.

I’ve also had some good experiences recently on Bangkok Airways and Korean Air. All passengers on Bangkok Air can enjoy the airport lounge before the flight and receive a full meal on a 1-hour domestic flight.

So I Flew on Lufthansa's Boeing 747-400...

The Boeing 747 is without doubt, an icon of civil aviation, revolutionizing air travel all over the globe as the very first widebody airliner to enter service.

The 747-400 variant is a more advanced version that first flew in 1988, and served as the backbone of many airlines' long haul fleets in the decades that followed.

However, I've never actually flown on one before, and with Lufthansa bringing back 8 of theirs back into service, it was about time I flew on the iconic 747-400!

With many thanks to Mr. @JonathanWinton123 for the external shot of the landing!

TRIP REPORT | Qatar's Excellence on 16h Flight | Doha to San Francisco | QATAR AIRWAYS A350

Qatar Airways Trip Report flying from Doha to San Francisco onboard one of the Qatar Airways Airbus A350-1000 on a lovely morning in Doha as well as the half of the World we flew in this 16h flight.

A comfortable 16-hour flight from Doha to San Francisco onboard the Qatar Airways Airbus A350-1000, the biggest of the A350 family. 16 hours flying, clearly in the ultra-long-haul region, that passed faster than I was expecting. The flight was almost full, so we didn't get any empty middle seats, which would have increased a lot the comfort.

After a nice tour of Doha-Hamad International Airport, we boarded the A350 that would take us to San Francisco. Everything went on time and smoothly. No rush for boarding and with clearly enough staff at the airport to manage this in a nice calm manner.

We took from Doha heading to the north. After some amazing views of Doha, we set course towards Iran. We crossed the country until we reached the Caspian Sea. From there we flew northbound across Kazakhstan and entered Russia. We flew in parallel to the Urals until reaching the Arctic Ocean.

From there we flew basically in direct course to San Francisco, overflying the North Pole and entering Canada over the Yukon Territory. We left the Mackenzie Mountains on our right and flew towards British Columbia. We flew next to Vancouver, Portland, and, finally, San Francisco, where we landed around 10 minutes ahead of the scheduled, almost 16 hours after takeoff.

About the onboard service, we all know well about Qatar Airways' very high standards. In this flight, it was just perfect. The flavors were just incredible in every single bite of the lunch. Qatar Airways Quisine is clearly above the majority of restaurants you might find in your city. Just amazing. Perfect.

Now it's your turn!
Have you ever flown with Qatar Airways? Which route? How was the experience? What do you think about the Qatar Airways service? Have you ever been in San Francisco? Maybe in Doha? Have you ever flown on the Airbus A350? Have you ever done Ultra-Lomg-Haul?
Lots of things to talk about! See you in the comments!
