Slovenian Impressions. Beloved Ljubljana.

Slovenian Impressions. Beloved Ljubljana (short)

Ljubljana is beloved. The words in Slovene almost sound the same. And for those who really know Ljubljana, these words have the same meaning. The capital of the country with the word love in its name is the junction of Slovenia’s diversities. Museums and galleries, pubs along the river and city squares, theatres and concert halls, festivals organized in the streets during the summer, all lined up near the Plečnik’s Triple Bridge. Nature is easily accessible from the centre of Ljubljana, a city that proudly carried the title European Green Capital 2016. See everything by bike or foot, take a walk in the city park or up the hill to enjoy the view from the castle above the city.

Slovenian Impressions. Feel pure LOVE.

Slovenia. The only country in the world with LOVE in its name. It is also the only European country which connects the Alps, the Mediterranean and the Pannonian Plain in manageable distances. And that’s not all: it also has the Karst and other beauties. In Slovenia love connects diversities. You can find it and feel it in your own way.

Slovenian Impressions. Taste of the Slovenian sea.

“Salt is the sea that could not return to the sky.” This is inscribed on the packaging of Piran salt, which is produced in the same way as at the time when the most beautiful town on the Slovenian coast was emerging on salty marine shoals of the Adriatic Sea.

But clean sea, kind sun and the typical wind are not enough to make good salt. Slovenian salt producers know that the best salt is also made with love. The salt flower, one of the best in the world, is still made according to traditional methods.

People come to Slovenian coast to feel good. The hinterland invites them to see the olive plantations and vineyards, caressed by the salty winds. The winds mixed with the music of virtuosos such as Tartini and the sounds of birds that return to protected wetlands.

Ljubljana - Slovenia | Impressions

Ljubljana is the quaint capital city of Slovenia, a small country in Central/Southeast Europe nudged between the Alps and the Mediterranean. As the cultural and social hub of the country, its bustling café and restaurant life is as inviting as the people themselves. Slovenes have somehow managed to retain a distinct cultural identity despite being dominated by their bigger neighbors and they're proud to show off the architectural highlights of their beloved capital. It's a perfect base if you are planning to head to the national parks too as it boasts plenty connections to the rest of the country such as the popular tourist destination Lake Bled.

Meet Ljubljana

This video gives you a local's perspective of the city of Ljubljana, Slovenia. These are real locals with real candid answers. I asked each local the same 7 questions. Instead of me giving my impression of Ljubljana after only one week of being there, I wanted the locals to tell the story.

QUESTIONS:
1) What is a typical Slovenian Hello or Greeting?
2) How would you describe Ljubljana to a foreigner?
3) How would you describe the people from Ljubljana?
4) How would you describe Slovenian Food?
5) How would you describe Slovenian Wine?
6) Why should a tourist come to Ljubljana?
7) What is a typical Slovenian Goodbye?

Slovenian Impressions. Incredible Alpine landscape.

The Alps in Slovenia connect landscapes and people. Trails invite you to challenge yourself in nature. And what nature it is! Mighty and accessible all at the same time.

Mt Triglav is the highest peak of Slovenia. The mountain, featured in the Slovenian coat-of-arms, carries the same name as the ancient Slavic god that had power over the sky, earth and the underground. Here, the magnificent treasures are protected from human greed by the fairytale Goldhorn.

This kingdom of nature – Triglav National Park – is among the oldest natural parks in Europe. Lake Bled, beneath the peaks of the Julian Alps, is an image of paradise. If you ring the bell of the church on the island in the middle of the lake, your wishes might come true.

Slovenian Impressions. Mysterious Karst.

Stone landscapes exist all over the world, but the Karst is unique. Postojna Cave is the largest and the most visited karst cave in Europe. A special train has been carrying tourists since 1818. On the arch in front of the high rock wall, behind which several levels of karst tunnels hide, is Predjama Castle.

The Karst is the region in south-western Slovenia, where vineyards grow on limestone soil and give birth to teran wine. This is where the Lipizzaner horses from the oldest stud farm graze. Not far away are the Škocjan Caves that hide the largest underwater canyon in Europe andare on the UNESCO world heritage list.

Cerknica Lake, the largest Slovenian lake, covers 26km2. However, it can be seen only during one part of the year, when underground water fills the green karst field. Go deeper, discover misteries of the Slovenian Karst.

TRYING SLOVENIAN FOOD IN LJUBLJANA (Flying to the Balkans + exploring Ljubljana)

After flying to Ljubljana, we explore the capital of Slovenia and try delicious Slovenian food!

On this episode of Mapping It, we fly from Minneapolis to Ljubljana. After picking up our rental car, we head to the city center to explore Ljubljana on Slovenia’s National Day. We enjoy delicious strukli in two tasty flavors, and try some local sausage with mustard. We wander around the old town, exploring the beautiful architecture of the city, including some famous sites designed by Slovenia’s top architect: Jose Plecnik. It was a whirlwind tour of Ljubljana but we loved every minute of it and can’t wait to go back in the future!

We hope you enjoy coming along on our adventures!

The songs used in this episode are from Epidemic Sound:

We're Karin and Jeremy! Just an average couple with a love for travel. We work full-time jobs that only offer limited vacation time, so we work hard to get the most out of our holidays. Join us on our adventures as we maximize our time off on Mapping It.

BELOVED (Lyrics: Martin Lunder)

SHE’S NEVER DANCED ALL BY HERSELF
HER DREAMS WE ALL CHASE, NOTHING ELSE
MOST BEATIFUL ONE’S EVER SEEN
BEEN WHISPERING STORIES UNREAL

AND THERE SHE’S TAKING ON THE WORLD
PASSIONATE, IT LOOKS ABSURD

THE SUN STROKES HER HAIR WHEN SHE’S PASSING BY
CLOUDS PART THEIR WAYS HIDING TEARS
THERE’S MORE TO HER SECRETS THAN MEETS THE EYE
DON’T MISS HER AND TRY NOT TO BLINK

CAN WE SHARE THE SKIES AND NOTHING MORE
CAN WE TAKE YOUR HAND AND NEVER LET GO
CARRYING LINES ENGRAVED IN OUR HEARTS
HERE WE NOW BELONG, WITH YOU

WOULD YOU SHARE YOUR SKIES KISSED BY THE STARS
LIGHT THEM UP, MAKE FRIENDS WITH STRANGERS, PASSERSBY
SO CATCH OUR HEARTS WITH THE SONG YOU SING
THE WORLD IS ON ITS KNEES
BEFORE YOU, FOR YOU

CLOCKS COME TO A STANDSTILL WHEN SHE’S AROUND
STORMS ALWAYS MAKE WAY FOR A NEW DAY
WATCHING HER SHIPS SAIL WITH THE MILDEST SOUND
ALTHOUGH IT’S UNTHINKABLE
SHE GOES FOR MORE, YES SHE GOES FOR MORE
THAN EVER BEFORE

Slovenian Impressions. World of authentic flavours.

Take a seat! It’s good.

Genuine Slovenian inns, tourist farms and restaurants that vary their menus with the seasons prove that Slovenia is a culinary paradise. The ingredients for delicacies come from the nearby fields and forests, rivers, lakes and the sea. Let yourself be surprised by the food in the street at the Open Kitchen in Ljubljana, for instance.

Slovenia has three wine-growing regions and 24 gastronomic regions. Original wines like zelen, cviček, teran, ranina, rebula have put Slovenia on the map of the wine-growing world of the future.

Dober tek & na zdravje! (Bon appetite & Cheers!)
