South Canara has its share of seafood eateries, but then, there are some that have endeared themselves to diners over decades by virtue of being true to the traditions they follow. One such popular seafood stop is Hotel Mahalaxmi, in the fishing village of Malpe, about six kilometres from Udupi, where Mrs. Pushpavati Bangera, the matriarch of this family run restaurant that began as a tiny hut, has been cleaning the fish and preparing the masala for the fish curry and fry each day for the last 60 years. I catch up with her and her son, Vishwanath Bangera before I sit down to a satisfying fish thali meal.

50 years ago, Thimmappa and his wife set up three tables in a rented outhouse in Udupi that they called home, to earn a livelihood by serving a simple meal of fish fry, curry and rice. Over the years, the fish fry, slathered in a secret masala made by the couple, and their sons thereafter, gained favour with locals who would flock to this home that carried no name. Five years ago, his son, Sathish Kotian finally put up a nameboard as a tribute to his late father’s culinary legacy that has endured decades since the eatery’s modest beginnings. In this episode, I visit Hotel Thimmappa Fish Meals to chat with Kotian and also taste some of the seafood delicacies here. Hope you enjoy this one. Take care and stay safe.

The fish meal is a simple affair here, there’s rice, a tasty curry made with small-sized, inexpensive fish, a vegetable for the day and some pickle. And to complete this, one picks from the selection of fish fry (charged extra) proffered by attendants who scurry between the tables and the kitchen. Whether one has a budget of under Rs. 100 or 300, one is assured of a satisfying fish meal at Thimmappa.

This was a plump lady fish, the semolina forming the perfect crunchy crumb over a veil of perfectly spiced masala encasing the flakey delicate flesh of the fish. One of the best kane rava fry preparations that I have tasted.

A new adventure has begun from Udupi, the coastal district in Karnataka, carved out of Dakshina Kannada district in 1997. Udupi stands as a symbol for the temple and cultural tradition of Karnataka.
The name “Udupi” is believed to have come from the Sanskrit words “Udu & Pa” that means “stars” and “Lord“. According to legend, the Moon’s light was once reduced due to a curse by King Daksha. The Moon prayed to Lord Shiva to get back the original shine, and the prayer was believed to be made at the Chandramouleshwara Temple here. Pleased, Lord Shiva restored the Moon’s shine. It is also believed that the name Udupi was derived from the Tulu word “Odipu” which is associated with the Odabhanishwara Temple at Malpe. The district is blessed with a fairly 100 km long beautiful coastline.

Stay at Vindya home stay was very comforting as the property is very well maintained for the price you are paying for, and it's just 500 meters away from the beautiful Malpe Beach .
Malpe is a natural port in Udupi. It is an important port and major fishing harbor on the Karnataka Coast. Malpe beach town is located around 6km from Udupi city center and it is calm beach town , blessed with endless stretch of golden sand , graciously swaying palm trees, clear blue sky and the gentle murmur sea, set the perfect mood for an idyllic holiday.
In evening took a walk around malpe beach side and explored the beach side market and there we tried some street side food and I personally loved the fish fry's , it was very cheap as you get fish fry options starting from Rs.50 and you can see whole lot varieties of fishes , we ended our day by having dinner at Blue Zone cafe which on the beach front.

When this enterprise conjured up the name Diana in the sixties, it was meant to sell cool drinks and ice cream in Udupi, then a sleepy town in South Canara. But because cool drinks and ice creams weren’t popular in this sleepy South Canara town those days, the Pai family decided to diversify into snacks. Their first creation, a vegetable cutlet, then a foreign item to the Udupi populace, took nearly five years to curry favour with the locals. Along the way, they also accidentally conjured up an ice cream concoction, the Diana Gadbad. A potato and beetroot patty that is flavoured with a seasoning of curry leaves, lentils and spices, this cutlet is a delicious medley of flavours and textures. The accompanying homemade chutney and sauce make for worthy companions to this Diana classic.

Diana Gadbad
An accidental invention of this eatery nearly 60 years ago when the restaurant’s founder, Mohandas Pai, put together a concoction of three ice creams, because he had very little quantity of each, topped with cashew nuts to feed a large group of customers who dropped in unexpectedly for ice cream. And because it was prepared in a ‘gadibidi’ (kannada word for ‘hurry’) it came to be known as the Gadbad. A layered creation with strawberry ice cream, eight types of dry fruits, fresh fruits, a special ‘Horlicks’ cake, vanilla cake, no two spoonfuls of this delicious dessert are the same.

We have ordered their first creation, a vegetable cutlet, Gadbad Ice Cream and Light House.
