Orchard Road is a whole street that's almost entirely dedicated to shopping. It is the must-visit location in Singapore for those looking for a bit of retail therapy (which many do come to Singapore for). The wide avenue is lined with a whole host of shopping centres – from the original Chinese emporiums to modern megamalls made from steel and glass.
Orchard Road is over 2 km long and there are 3 MRT stops lining it, namely Doby Ghaut, Orchard, and Somerset. If there’s no rush, simply walking between the malls, shopping centres, and boutiques can be a rather pleasant experience, and which can make up a big part of your visit to Singapore.

Orchard Road: The Ultimate Singapore Shopping Spree
Orchard Road is a famous shopping street in Singapore. It is a 2.5 km (1.6 mi) long stretch of road lined with luxury malls, department stores, boutiques, and street vendors. Orchard Road is a vibrant and exciting place to shop. There are always people milling about, and the streets are always full of energy. Orchard Road is located in the heart of Singapore, making it easily accessible by public transportation. And in addition to shops Orchard Roads has tons of dining options. The shopping mall food courts are some of my favorites! And definitely check out the one at ION Orchard -- home to over 280 stores, and my favorite food court the Food Opera on Basement Level 4.

This walking tour on Orchard Road starts at the Dhoby Gaut MRT Station and ends at the Singapore Marriot Tang Plaza Hotel. On the way between these two Orchard Road addresses we pass places like the Hamleys Toy Shop, The Plaza Sigapura shopping mall (which features the Jelly Bean Family sculpture by Italian artist Mauro Peruchetti in front of it), The official residence of the Prime Minister of Singapore (The Istana),The Istana Park, Casa Gessi, Orchard Central (Singapore´s tallest vertical shopping mall), Mandarin Orchard Gallery shopping mall and the luxury Mandarin Hotel, The CentrePoint shopping Mall, Peranakan Place (a Singapore heritage building), The Orchard Gateway shopping mall, Midpoint Orchard shopping mall, Robinsons - The Heeren (A retail store), Ngee Ann City (a shopping and commercial centre) which also houses the high end Japanese Takashimaya store, the upmarket Paragon shopping mall (housing shops like Gucci and Prada), the Lucky Plaza shopping mall, Wisma Atria building and the Wisma Atria shopping mall, the 56-storey Orchard Residences building, the Tangs Plaza and the Orchard Road MRT underground station.

Somerset is a bustling area located within the Orchard Road shopping district in Singapore. The name Somerset is derived from Somerset Road, which runs parallel to the famous Orchard Road. The history of Somerset is closely linked to the development and transformation of Orchard Road from a rural, plantation-covered area to a modern shopping and entertainment destination.
In the early 19th century, the land that now constitutes Somerset and the Orchard Road area was covered in nutmeg plantations and fruit orchards. The area was named Orchard Road after these plantations. However, by the mid-19th century, the nutmeg crop failed due to disease, and the plantations eventually gave way to residential development.
In the early 20th century, the Somerset area began to transform as more residential estates, schools, and religious institutions were established. The region slowly emerged as a commercial and entertainment hub in the mid-20th century, with cinemas, hotels, and shopping centers being built along Orchard Road.
The name Somerset is believed to be linked to the British presence in Singapore during the colonial era. Some sources suggest that Somerset Road was named after Lord Arthur Charles Somerset, an officer in the British army who was stationed in Singapore in the 19th century. Are you planning to visit Singapore? Then you should definitely pay a visit to Singapore’s famous Orchard Road. Orchard Road, popularly known as “Orchard,” is a major 2.5-km-long road in Singapore’s Central Area. It is home to many internationally known food outlets and stores, including Abercrombie & Fitch, Armani, Prada, Chanel, Gucci, and more. Orchard Road has a long history. The road got its name from the orchard plantations that it once led to, around the 19th century. Since 1977, Orchard Road has always remained a 1-way street to facilitate the smooth flow of traffic and international tourists. Orchard has a huge network of underground pedestrian walkways that connect roads to various businesses. The house of Singapore's first Prime Minister is located just south of Orchard Road, at 38 Oxley Road. The well-known Singapore Botanic Gardens, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is located on the western side of Orchard Road. The entire area does business worth millions of dollars every year and is a major attraction for both local and international tourists.
