How Sikh Chefs Feed 100,000 People At The Gurudwara Bangla Sahib Temple In New Delhi, India

Open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, the Gurudwara Bangla Sahib temple in New Delhi, India, feeds 30,000 to 40,000 people every day for free. And during religious holidays, that number can swell to well over 100,000. To keep up with demand, the kitchen uses machines to help cook a majority of its food.

We visited the temple during the birth anniversary of the 10th guru, Gobind Singh, to see how it prepares a celebratory feast in such big batches.

» THE GOLDEN TEMPLE
LOCATION: Golden Temple Rd, Atta Mandi, Katra Ahluwalia, Amritsar
OPEN: 24 hours/day, 7 days/week

The Golden Temple is a Gurdwara, a place of worship for Sikhs, located in the city of Amritsar, Punjab, India. The Golden Temple is the most important pilgrimage site of Sikhism and considered to be spiritually the most significant shrine in Sikhism. Along with being a central religious place for Sikhs, it is a symbol of human brotherhood and equality, as people from all faiths, as well as those who do not profess any faith, are welcomed.

The Golden Temple is home to a Langar, a community-run free kitchen and dining hall where food is served around the clock to all visitors, regardless of faith, gender, nationality or economic background. There are thousands of Sikh volunteers cooking and serving the food as well as cleaning after visitors finish eating. Each day, thousands of people from varied backgrounds come to The Golden Temple, sit on the floor and eat together as equals. All of the food served is vegetarian.

5 SECRETS To Sikhism - Learning From Locals In Amritsar, Punjab, India ????????

Sikhism - is the fifth-largest religion in the world, founded in the Punjab region with 30 million believers these days. Sikhism was established by Guru Nanak and Sikhs believe in the oneness of all beings and the equality of everyone. The Sikh faith is a monotheistic religion, meaning Sikhs worship one God.

Sikhs are easily recognized by their distinctive turbans - that is the headwear I have on my head. As part of the requirement and the respect to the religion, I had to get dressed accordingly to visit the holiest place - The Golden Temple in Amritsar. This headwear represents equality, honor, self-respect, courage, spirituality, and piety. So as part of the requirement, everyone had to cover their head in some way including women and kids.

Amritsar through the eyes of a local Sikh man????????

Today is my last and final video exploring India with the legend @rahulpenciya and our friends. We went out to Amritsar and went to a few different iconic local food stands in which you will see the kindness from our Sikh friends. After that, we visited an incredibly beautiful temple and then finished off by visiting this massive fort and got to experience more of the Punjabi and Sikh culture.

This is the largest free kitchen in the world. Open 24 hours, year round, this food hall feeds 100,000 people for free each day. And on religious holidays that number can double.

Just one of these huge bowls is enough to feed around 10,000 people.

VISITING the Sikh GOLDEN TEMPLE on the BUSIEST DAY OF THE YEAR Amritsar, INDIA ???????? INDIAN STREET FOOD

Head to to save 10% off your first purchase of a website or domain using code bagspackedfamily

Wow! You don’t want to miss this episode! I hope you are able to feel like you are here with us as we explore the famous Sikh Golden Temple (Sri Harmandir Sahib) in Amritsar, India. It is nice and cool in India’s Punjab state. Our goal for today is to spend all day at the Golden Temple (Darbar Sahib), but before we do that we need to get some Indian street food for breakfast. We head in search of a local streetside restaurant (known as a Dhaba) because we plan to each as much kulcha (buttery stuffed bread) as we can while we are in Punjab. Our first stop is at the famous Bhai Kulwant Singh - Kulchian Wale. We had to wait a while to get a seat, but it was worth it. The food was amazing and our tummies were full when we left. Then, we went in search of headscarves (both males and females are required to cover their heads while in the temple). After that, we were ready to experience a full day at Amritsar’s Golden Temple.

In this video, Jonathan walks you through what to expect while visiting the Golden Temple: checking your shoes, entering the temple, walking around, stepping into the Amrit Sarovar water surrounding the Golden Temple, eating the Langar, exploring the food preparation area (Cedar tries to jump in and help out), receiving the (karah prasad) and more.

This is a bittersweet moment for us, as we have to say goodbye to India for now (we will be back!). Please join us on our long layover in Dubai, where we explore a variety of cuisine options!

Amritsar - Golden Temple

The 'Harmandir Sahib', perhaps better known as the Golden Temple, is the holiest Sikh gurdwara located in the city of Amritsar in India. It is the spiritual center for those who follow Sikhism, a religion based on the principles of honesty, purity, equality of all religions, fidelity, and self control.

The entire complex comprises of a large number of buildings, including the Golden Temple itself, guestrooms, a museum, and a big communal kitchen, the 'langar'. Providing free meals, the kitchen is open to people from all backgrounds and religions. It is estimated that between 60,000 and 80,000 pilgrims come to eat inside the langar after prayer every day.

The footage in this clip was made in October 2014, on a visit to Amritsar and other parts of India. Shot on a Panasonic GH4.
