How Safe Is Sierra Leone for Travel?

Sierra Leone is located on the West Coast of Africa, sharing its borders with the Republic of Guinea to the north and northeast, Liberia to the east and southeast, while the Atlantic Ocean is to the west and south.
If you’re longing for nature, look no further than the Banana Island, offering natural beauty unlike anywhere in the world and a bunch of underwater and water activities.
Sierra Leone is naturally both rich and diverse.
Overall though many say it is the friendliest African country, the government of this country stands by their attitude that Sierra Leona is not the safest country to visit. It has extremely high crime rates, of both violent and petty crime. You should be vigilant and take all possible precaution measures in order to minimize the risk of something wrong happening.

DEEP Street Market Walk in the Heart of Freetown, Sierra Leone ????????
At the center of Freetown, the heart of Sierra Leone, lies a sprawling street market that covers blocks and blocks, where you can find anything if you know where to look and where you definitely have to watch your step so you don't get run over by a KeKe (tuk tuk).
I went LIVE during this market walk. You can watch that video, which has some narration, here:
Note: As a foreigner I would NEVER have tried to film in this market if I were by myself. My friend, Vincent, with the blue backpack is a bit of a local celebrity and he got me the street approval to do this. His wife was walking behind me so I could focus on filming. Even then, it wasn't a stop and gawk situation.
Second note: I walked through the market just fine by myself when I was a shopper/tourist. The issue wasn't safety. It was only the presence of the camera that complicated things. There are many complex reasons for this in Sierra Leone. I feel privileged that with Vincent's help I was able to get this interesting and very honest footage.
