I shot this roll of film a few months back when exploring Portugal in our van Ody at a place an hour north of Lisbon called Buddha Eden. Buddha Eden is a peace garden located in Portugal with enormous sculptures of Buddha as well as terracotta soldiers, lakes, and even a pagoda.

Shoot 35mm Film Prague: Bridges & Boats (Story 15)

This was the first roll of film that I shot in Prague and I am so happy with how it turned out. I don’t want to spoil the video for you if you haven’t watched yet, but let's just say the Bridges & Boats theme expands a bit as the day progresses.

I mention at the end of the video how breaking my arm forced me to slow down with the camera. Before the injury when Lou and I would shoot these videos more often than we’d like to admit the actual shooting of the film wasn’t the focus. Instead the composition of the video took priority. Sometimes there would be moments where I would think there was a photo I’d like to take and then Lou would film me walking over and as I pulled up the camera, I would realize that the shot wasn’t actually something I liked or thought worthwhile enough to capture. But knowing that he was already rolling (and we shoot RAW so file size is always an issue not only for storage but our memory cards too!), I would just take the shot. So long story short, on this roll we had to change our workflow - instead in almost all of the photographs, I would go compose my shot, figure out my settings, and then Lou would start rolling and I would go take the photograph. Not only did I feel way less rushed and like I was composing better, but I also had way more FUN! It felt like I was actually taking the time to see the world around me and choose the scenes that were most interesting to me. Film photography is just a hobby of mine, but shooting on this trip to Prague made me realize how it can actually help me remember to slow down and focus on the important things instead of just trying to complete the task at hand.

How to Shoot 35mm Film (Story 1)

Film Camera: Canon A1 with a 50mm f/1.4 Canon lens -- FujiColor Superia 200
Video Camera: Canon 5D3 with a 35mm Summicron F2 (1970) Leica lens

This is our first STORY in our new Snippet/Story style and we are so very excited to share it with you.

This week we tried to weave the beautiful experience of film photography with a bit of a how-to-video with the hopes of inspiring you to get out and capture your environment.

The entire experience of shooting film from choosing your film stock, to manually loading the film, to the sexy sound of winding the film after each photo, well it all just begs you to slow down, to focus on the moment at hand, and take it all in and then... the most important part... to stay present. No checking how the photo turned out, no re-taking the selfie, not even the need to see how many likes it got. Nope, a film camera gives you the luxury of hoping that you captured the moment and letting that be enough.

And while I can go on and on about the lessons that film has already taught me - and this was just my first roll ! - the main thing that making this story taught me is how lucky I am to have a partner as patient and thoughtful as Lou! His work ethic is unlike anyone I have ever met and the passion he pours into creating these beautiful moments each week never ceases to amaze me.

I'm grateful for this week's video for reminding me of time spent: hanging at second hand camera stores, capturing special moments with dear friends, and enjoying perfect moments of summer when you feel surrounded by love.

Exploring Mala Strana, also known as Lesser Town, was so much fun. Prague Castle is probably the most visited part of the city next to Old Town when it comes to tourists. And even if our film camera ended up having a few issues during the day, we still had such a blast.

If you want to check out the first half of the roll and the rest of the photos I took that day check out this blogpost:

AND to learn more about Prague take a look at the last few posts I did on the blog where I share everything I researched about the city with you :)

This video definitely challenged me during the filming process. I had no idea that our film camera's battery was dying, so I kept having moments where I would try to take a photograph and then when I pressed the shutter wouldn't go. Everything felt like it was moving too fast and I wasn't able to compose the shots I wanted. I think I was also a bit tired from sleeping in the van (broken arm + sleeping bag can be a tricky situation for a proper night's rest). But luckily after a little pep talk from Lou, I realized there was no need to put pressure on myself to take good or even great photos. The whole point of these videos is just to have fun! And that is how the day shifted as we moved into the metro and then I finally felt calm and ready to enjoy the photos however they ended up turning out.

Also, Lou wants me to ask if any of you liked my little joke about youtube thumbnails? But what I think he really wants to know is do you guys watch the videos all the way to the end?? :) :) :)

Whiplash

Right now life feels like a crazy, beautiful, intense blur. Zipping from one place to the next, building memories, meeting friends, then saying goodbye all over again, waking up some mornings unsure of where we parked the van the night before, or what country we're even in. I decided to try and intercut some of the last years footage to give you an idea of the feeling of whiplash Dana and I are experiencing. Best enjoyed with some nice headphones : )

Hugs from Lisbon,
Lou

Shooting 35mm Film in Schöneberg - Film February - Part 1 (Snippet 31)

Welcome to our first edition of the four part series we call Film February!

We will be shooting a different roll of color film each week this month on our Canon A-1. This week we shot Fujifilm Superia Xtra 400 and explored Schöneberg and I have to say the coolest thing that happened (spoiler alert!) was getting spotted on the street by Arianne and Pierre-Henri. We get to chat with so many of you here in the comments or over email, but to actually meet on the street and get to chat about life was such a special moment for Lou and I. We also loved getting to see the Gasometer covered in the thick fog.

Film February is all about pushing ourselves to keep exploring this city we call home even if it is freezing cold and has never ending bleak grey skies. It is already helping counteract our natural tendencies to hibernate this winter! It is also helping us to capture the city we love so dearly before we take off on our van journeys later this year.

Question of the Week:
What is one thing you have done this month to make you feel creative?

Shooting 35mm Film in Neukölln - Film February - Part 4 (Snippet 34)

This is the last video in our Film February series! It has been so much fun exploring different neighborhoods in Berlin each week and trying out different film stocks. This week we went to Neukölln and shot Portra 400.

We really hope that you have enjoyed the series and have been able to learn with me as I continue to get to know my Canon A-1 better and better. We appreciate all the support and love you've shown us in the comments. Focusing on capturing the city around us has definitely made our February better and now that the sun is peaking back into our life we can feel the city waking up from it's winter hibernation.

Favorite moments of this video:
- our surprise run-in with Bridget in Tempelhof (go check our her project Barter Barber:
- shooting portraits of our beautiful friend Eva (@evadawn_illustrations)

Favorite moments of the series:
- dogs outside grocery stores
- playing with reflections in water
- pretty faces and trees
- exploring our city with my main man

Photo shoot in the streets of Lisbon

One of the most exciting things you can do in Lisbon is to hire a photographer and do a photo shoot. Narrow streets, steep hills, graffiti and trams make a wonderful contrast to your own personal images.

LISBOA SHOOTING

PH : ERIKA BANCHIO
STYLIST: MARIKA GUIDA
MUA : PAT MAcLOU
MODEL : MATILDE DE LOREIRO

A Week-End of Film Photography in Lisbon

Spent a week-end away in Lisbon back in June and meant to do a short video about it.

Turns out 99% of the video footage I took was on portrait mode, hence I embraced that reel life. Once I finished the video I also realized it was too long to be uploaded as a Reel to Instagram, so there you go. ????

Photos shot on a mix of Kodak Films on the Yashica Mat-124 and the Nikon FM2.

Lisbon in 24 Hours

#Vanlife in a city is a completely different experience. There is so much to see and do and we're spending many many hours away from Ody, which is a completely different daily routine from our weeks on the southern coast of Portugal.

Our time in #Lisbon has been so important for us when it comes to reconnecting with why we decided to live in a van in the first place. We wanted to meet new people, tell stories about places we've never been, and learn about other cultures.

Lisbon has welcomed us with open arms and I really hope you enjoy this day we spent exploring the city. Below is our itinerary for #24HoursinLisbon in case you are curious:

Stop 1: Bowls&Bar -
R. de São Bento 51, 1200-815 Lisboa

Stop 2: Reservatório da Mãe d'Água das Amoreiras -
Praça das Amoreiras 10, 1250-020 Lisboa

Stop 3: Jardim Botânico -
Rua da Escola Politécnica 56/58 102, 1250 Lisboa

LUNCH: Sanskar Nepal

Stop 4: Carmo Convent -
Largo do Carmo, 1200-092 Lisboa

Stop 5: National Pantheon -
Campo de Santa Clara, 1100-471 Lisboa

Stop 6: Feira da Ladra

Stop 8: Miradouro Santa Luzia for the meetup

Love from Lisbon,

Lisbon by Tuk Tuk

The best tour in #Lisbon is hands down Eco Tuk Tours -

Our adventure with Tiago was definitely a highlight of our time in Lisbon, as we learned far more in the two hours we toured the city with him than we had in our normal self-led exploration. He was not only knowledgeable of the city's history but was also so gracious in showing us a bunch of spots that he loves to go with his friends.

We learned a lot about the #streetart that covers so many of Lisbon's walls with famous artists such as Vihls, Obey, Shepard Fairey, and many many more. He showed us neighborhoods we wouldn't have stumbled onto on our own like Bangladeshi Street and China Town.

But the most incredible part of the whole trip was seeing Tiago interact with the city. He grew up here along with his 12 brothers, and you can tell by the number of people he knew on the street just how much he loves and interacts with his city. We would be driving by and then a bus would pass, and he'd be honking and waving because he knew a passenger on the street. We would stop and chat with old ladies on the corner that he made friends with long ago. And he wasn't shy to chat up strangers too. A new construction site had gone up and he started asking about what they were doing, only to find out it was actually archeologists because a Muslim burial site had been discovered during the build of a new hotel. His contagious smile and next level energy had Lou and I buzzing for the rest of the day.

Thank you Eco #TukTours and Tiago for such an incredible opportunity!

Much love,
Dana (& Lou)

Ps if you want to try his restaurant it is Carapau de Corrida (restaurantecarapaudecorrida.pt) but if you're vegan make sure to call ahead. They have one vegetarian option every day and some days like the day we were there you get lucky and it happens to be vegan too :)

Filmed with a gopro during a lovely Weekend trip in wonderful Lisbon!

We went to Lisbon for a few days, before we went to the beach to get some surfing lessons.
Lisbon is imho one of the best cities in europe, very relaxed, very beautiful!

Clasic movie - lisbon 1956

We're Staying in Portugal!

Our time in Lisbon was filled with life - new faces, new sites, new restaurants, but it was also filled with many sweaty days and nights, little sleep, and zero routine. I think that is one of the best parts of #vanlife. That you can create this intense experience - building a life in a city in just two weeks - and then in just a moment, you can drive away to build another. One based on lazy mornings and ocean swims. You can just dream up a reality and then chase it immediately. Change your plan whenever you want. And if we're doing it correctly we can take the time to listen to exactly what we need to find fulfillment and then go after it without hesitation. #Portugal has been our playground all summer, and after much debate on if we should push on with our plan to explore northern Spain in the autumn months, we've changed our minds and are staying here in this country that has given us so much. We can't wait to share the adventures to come.

Big hugs,
Dana (&Lou)
