Diving the BEST SHIPWRECK in FLORIDA!!Lauderdale by the Sea} ????‍☠️

Part 2 of our dive trip to Pompano Florida. This is our dive on the Captain Dan Shipwreck, previously known as the Coast Guard Tender Hollyhock and the Good News Mission Ship. The wreck rest in 110 feet of water and is an incredible wreck to scuba dive on. We say so many barracudas and other fish on this wreck. As of now, this was my best wreck dive...

Pompano Beach Wreck Diving

Diving the Okinawa

The Okinawa wreck is located just about a mile off shore from Pompano Beach, Florida. She is a retired U.S. Army Tug boat who saw many decades of towing destroyers up and down the east coast. She was sunk in the Shipwreck Park of Pompano to become yet another beautiful artificial reef. This wreck is good for Open Water divers or advanced and offers pretty safe penetration opportunities as you can always see your way out. This dive was with South Florida Dive Headquarters, they are always a great bunch of guys and gals!

Scuba Diving Florida’s Shipwreck Capital! ????‍☠️

I have officially started my Divemaster training through SDI went down to Pompano Beach Florida for a weekend full of awesome diving. This is the first video in a series that I will put out. This dive is on the Okinawa shipwreck, a wreck that is awesome to see and only in 72 feet of water. So many fish on this wreck and some awesome wreck penetration points. We went out with Aqua Life Divers and they put us right on the wrecks and were an awesome crew to go out with!

Best Wreck Dive Florida tour the Lady Luck wreck

The Lady Luck wreck was sunk in 2016 in Pompano Beach Florida. In my opinion this is the best wreck diving site in South Florida. This footage was filmed 2 years ago, this dive was about 2 weeks after the ship was sunk.

The ship is sitting in 130 feet of water. It is 320 feet in length and has many penetrations for swim throughs. NEVER enter an overhead confined space unless you are advanced trained for wreck or cave diving.

This was filmed on a Gopro Hero 3 and edited in Premiere Pro, the music is from Epidemic sound.

Please let me know if you have ever dove this wreck, and what is your favorite wreck.

Okinawa Tug Wreck Dive, Pompano Beach, Florida September 2023 @aqualifedivers4021

Okinawa Tug Wreck Dive, Pompano Beach, Florida September 2023

Type of Dive: Anchor
Depth Range: 35-70 ft
Skill Level: Open Water
Location: Pompano Beach

Description: The Okinawa is a 107' x 26' 6 Army Tug. Displacement loaded is 350 tons. Okinawa was equipped with a 40,000 lb Fairbanks Morse engine. The propeller is 8' in diameter and weighs over 2,000 lbs. The bow points to the south and and is sitting perfectly upright in 69'. The tug rises to 35' at the top of the pilot house. Okinawa was sunk by Shipwreck Park Inc. and is the 18th wreck in Shipwreck Park Pompano Beach. Renowned artist Dennis McDonald created whimsical dive bar called the Midnight Sun. The name was chosen by Finlandia Vodka the sinking project's largest sponsor. The dive bar includes sea creatures and a magical mermaid holding a Gazing Globe. As you look into the globe you see your reflection reminding all of us we need to be the stewards of the ocean. You can actually penetrate the opening in front of the wheelhouse and swim into the engine room and up and out through the dive bar!

History: LT 1970 was manufactured by Higgins Ind. for the U.S. Army and was completed in October of 1953. LT 1970 was later named Okinawa, after the battle of Okinawa. The picture below shows U.S. Army tug LT-1970 tows USS Cassin Young (DD-793) from Philadelphia to Boston in June 1978 following the destroyer’s loan to the National Park Service as a memorial ship. The move of the vessel was undertaken as an Army Reserve training exercise. The U.S. Army sold the Okinawa in 2003.

History of the Lady Luck Wreck:
Lady Luck, formerly known as Newtown Creek, is a 324-foot long, 49-foot wide tanker ship that was built by the Wiley Manufacturing Company in 1967. The sludge (sewage) tanker operated in New York seven days a week while transport 1.2 million gallons of sludge per day for nearly 50 years. She was decommissioned in the summer of 2014 then sold at auction on March 1, 2016 to Shipwreck Park, Inc., a private 501 (C)(3) corporation, for $100,000.

While the sinking as slated for 2pm on July 23, 2016, it took nearly 3 hours longer than expected to sink the Lady Luck. Around 4:40pm the ship started to take on water at a faster rate. Lady Luck started to list toward her Starboard side, but managed to right herself right below the ocean's surface. While most spectator we're nervous, the five former Newtown Creek crew members who were watching from the media boat we'rent concerned -- they've seen the vessel list many times. After working on the ship for 15+ years, they knew how the sledge compartments would fill up and right itself.

Local artist Dennis MacDonald, who is known for his work on the 2015 ill-fated Rappa Nui Reef, created a mock underwater casino that includes poker tables with card sharks, an octopus dealer, mermaid cocktail waitress and over-sized dice on the Lady Luck Wreck. This dive has countless photo opportunities!

The Lady Luck Wreck's underwater casino scene is a one-of-a-kind underwater experience.

The Lady Luck wreck will be the center focus of Shipwreck Park.

Diving The Lady Luck Wreck:
The Lady Luck is an advanced dive that rests in 131 feet off water, about a mile off shore of Atlantic Blvd. At this time there's no growth on her as she was recently sunk. Less than 24 hours after the Lady Luck Wreck made her final voyage to the bottom of the Atlantic, spade fish started making this their new home.

Be cautious when diving the wrecks in this area. strong currents are common.
