Footage is available for license contact Becky@LiquidProductions.com - (Chuuk) is known as one of the best shipwreck diving locations on the planet due to the large number of sunken ships and planes in a sheltered area. In February 1944 the United States Navy launched a large surface and air attack for 3 days called Operation Hailstone sinking over 40 ships, and destroying more than 275 planes. Truk was the Japanese anchorage during WWII and the USA took out merchant ships, battleships, destroyers, tankers, minesweepers, and gunboats making this area the largest shipwreck graveyard in the world. Wreck diving in Truk Lagoon, Chuuk - Micronesia
Truk lagoon in Chook Micronesia is a sight of Operation Hailstone conducted in February of 1944 during WWII. Over 40 ships were sank in the lagoon which at the time was a base of Japanese fleet. A group of Russian divers were the first to make deep-sea technical dives in Truk (Chuuk) Lagoon. This old film captured those unforgettable moments. Much time has passed since then, and a lot has been surveyed at great depths. But then we were the first!
Chuuk is a graveyard of warships.
Dozens of Japanese warships, more than 30 merchant ships and hundreds of aircraft rest under the clear azure waters of the Pacific Ocean in Chuuk Lagoon, which is located about a thousand kilometers from the Mariana Islands. During World War II, the Truk Islands (now called Chuuk) hosted a fleet that was the main base of the Imperial Japanese Navy in the South Pacific. Among the ships there were battleships, aircraft carriers, cruisers, tankers, cargo ships, tugs, submarines, etc. It was the Japanese analogue of the American Pearl Harbor.
This site was a strategically important point for the Japanese garrisons located on islands and atolls throughout the central and southern Pacific Ocean. These islands had airfields, underwater repair shops, a communications center and a radar station. Coastal defensive weapons and mortars guarded these facilities.
Operation Hailstone is the code name for the attack on the Truk Islands that took place on 17-18 February 1944. More than 500 aircraft, many ships and submarines suddenly attacked the islands. By that time, Japan, anticipating such a move, had already moved the aircraft carriers, battleships and heavy cruisers to safety.
However, a large number of small military and merchant ships remained in place, and several hundred aircraft were stationed at the airfields of the atoll. As a result, all equipment was destroyed by enemy bombers.
Today the wreckage in Truk Lagoon, sometimes referred to as the Ghost Fleet of Truk Lagoon, is quite an impressive sight. Most of the equipment lies at a depth of less than 15 meters. This place is still littered with explosives, mines, detonators, torpedoes, as well as human remains. The metal structures have been overgrown with colorful corals, which in turn have become home to local flora and fauna, including stingrays, turtles and sharks.
Now the lagoon is part of the Chuuk State, which is part of the Federated States of Micronesia. Chuuk Lagoon consists of several islands surrounded by a chain of reefs that form a natural harbor that covers an area of more than two thousand square kilometers.

Truk Lagoon 2016: Inside the Shipwrecks
The third of my videos of the shipwrecks during my trip to Chuuk, Micronesia, diving in Truk Lagoon. Had 5 days diving on a boat, with 20 dives on 13 different shipwrecks, a betty bomber wreck, and an outer reef shark dive.
This third one just some of the cool & haunting artifacts I captured while diving on the wrecks. The massive size of these ships along with the eerie evidence of devastation made for some amazing dives.
