Seaka Bridge in Quthing, Lesotho

Moyeni is also referred to as Quthing and is the only town in this region. Moyeni, or Quthing, is the capital town of the Quthing region and has a total population of around 130 000 residents in the area.

Seaka Bridge is one of the iconic places in Lesotho. The bridge is a colonial legacy. The bridge was manufactured in Worcester, England and erected at Commissioner drift, over Caledon River in 1882, having been brought up from the coast on ox wagon and re-erected in Seaka with the help of a grant from the United Kingdom Colonial Development and Welfare Fund. It was officiated and opened on the 12th December 1959.

Seaka is one of the most attractive places in Lesotho. It has two iconic bridges one build during colonial period and the new one build in the early 1990s.

Tsoelike Pass, Lesotho - Mountain Passes of South Africa

This amazing and very steep (mainly) gravel pass descends steeply to the dual bridges over the Tsoelike River. The newer on is a concrete bridge already showing signs of flood damage, whilst the older, graceful suspension bridge spans the river well above the flood peak level, still stands intact and in surprisingly good condition, considering it was built in 1930 by German missionaries.

The pass is located in the southern quartile of Lesotho, fairly close to the border with South Africa. GPS S30.024641 E28.722584

The climb out to the northern side of the valley is much steeper and peppered with tight hairpins. The photo right at the end of the video puts it all into perspective.

Semonkong Lodge Lesotho - Official Video

Armelle & Jonathan Halse took over the running of Semonkong Lodge, from the Frasers Trading Company, in 1990. The site on which the lodge stands, started by Syd Chaplain of Maluti Treks, was a favourite camping base for pony trekkers and fly fisherman looking to catch the famous brown or rainbow trout. Today, the lodge has grown to 23 stone and thatch rooms neatly positioned on the banks of the Maletsunyane River.

Deeply ingrained in the Semonkong Village and community which is just a stone’s throw away, the lodge is always bustling with activity as the Basotho people go about their daily lives. The balcony outside our Duck and Donkey Tavern, offers a fascinating view of daily life in Lesotho, as the Basotho’s, in their straw hats and traditional blankets, trot gracefully past on their ponies, followed by scuttling sheep, dogs, goats and donkeys. They are constantly transporting food and supplies, including large amounts of beer, from Semonkong to their villages which are sometimes days away.

Semonkong lodge believes in empowering individuals within their local community, using their environment and its conservation as the focal point of all their activities, creating long term sustainable income through tourism for as many people as possible. Please support all these activities as they provide jobs & strive to conserve the environment.

Semonkong Lodge offers you a glimpse of life in “The Kingdom in the Sky”, knowing you will return home refreshed and at peace.

South Africa / Lesotho border and surrounding area: Fouriesburg. Aerial footage from a drone.

This drone video is actually part 1 of footage that was taken during a week long holiday to the mountains. Unfortunately it hasn't yet rained since Winter and it was not as green as you will normally see. At first we visited the Afriski Mountain Ski Resort in Lesotho and added footage of the surrounds like Fouriesburg and Ficksburg. Of course there is no snow as it was the end of Spring already. The clip ends with the huge overhang cave in Fouriesburg that was used during the Anglo Boer war by Boer women to hide from the British soldiers.

Maletsunyane Falls in Maseru, Lesotho

Maletsunyane Falls in Maseru, Lesotho
The mighty Maletsunyane Falls in Lesotho, one of the highest single dropping waterfalls in Africa, creates a haze of smoke as the water plummets 186 metres into a spectacular gorge. It is from this smoke that Semonkong – The Place of Smoke – gets its name.

Lesotho is a small independent nation, in the middle of Southern Africa. It is known as the Mountain Kingdom. Thaba Ntlenyana (3482 meter) the highest peak in Southern Africa is found in the north of Lesotho, and geographically most of the country consists of high mountain ranges, which have been carved out by rivers. All these rivers flow into the Senqu River (Orange River) and then into the Atlantic Ocean.

A substantial percentage of the population live on the flat plateau referred to as the Lowlands, leaving the Highland areas sparsely populated.

The summer is the wet season with regular thunderstorms in the afternoons. The winter is the dry season, the temperature often dropping below zero. When a frontal weather system moves through, the mountains are often covered in snow. Snow has been recorded all year round in Semonkong, although it is rare outside the period of April to October. The summer temperature in the mountains rarely exceeds 28°C and may drop below -10°C in the winter. When preparing a trip to Lesotho, whether it is the summer or the winter, on foot or in 4 wheel drives, you must always have warm clothing.
