The Shankari Devi temple is believed to be in Sri Lanka at Trimkomali. Currently, there is no temple available here and the temple is said to have been destroyed by the Portuguese between the 16th and 17th centuries.
According to the priest’s account, the Portuguese who invaded the island in the 17th century completely cannon balled from their ship and demolished the cliff of the Devi temple. In its place stands a lonely pillar, like a silent spectator.
The temple of Sankari devi which was exactly at the top of a hill was ruined by foreign invaders. However, Amma’s idol is said to have been preserved in the present temple, which is next to where the idol originally stood.

The famous Shankari temple in Sri Lanka is one of the Ashta Dasha Shakti Peethas. Many have heard the Ashtadasha Shaktipeeth Shloka starting with LANKAAYAAM SHAANKARI DEVI ……….. – composed of Adi Shankaracharya which means Shankari in Lanka. This Shloka lists the locations of Devi temples which are considered to be part of the 18 Devi Peethas.
But hardly anyone in Sri Lanka knew of a famous Devi temple in the country. Even on the Internet, there was not much authentic information available. The temple is said to be located in the famous town of Trincomalee on the east coast. Sri Shankari Devi temple, according to the priest of Trincomalee, says that the Portuguese who invaded the island in the 17th century completely demolished the Devi temple from their ship.
The current Shiva temple, known locally as the Shankari temple, was a recent construction. Lord Shiva is called TRIKONESHVARA (probably because it is located in Trincomalee, which is actually TRI CONA MALAI, which means a triangle-shaped hill). There is a small Devi Shrine built next to the Shiva temple. The famous Bilva tree stands just on the edge of the hill a few hundred meters above the Indian Ocean. It is an exciting and spectacular sight to see. In general, the silence reflects what is most needed in this war-torn nation which is rightly called paradise. There is also a famous Kali temple in the heart of the city that devotees can visit on the way from Shankari temple
శ్రీలంకలోని ప్రసిద్ధ శంకరి దేవాలయం అష్టా దశ శక్తి పీఠాలలో ఒకటి. అష్టాదశ శక్తిపీఠం శ్లోకం లంకాయం శంకరీ దేవి ........ - ఆదిశంకరాచార్యుల స్వరపరచబడింది, అంటే లంకలోని శంకరి అని చాలా మంది విన్నారు. ఈ శ్లోకం 18 దేవి పీఠాలలో భాగంగా పరిగణించబడే దేవి ఆలయాల స్థానాలను జాబితా చేస్తుంది.
కానీ శ్రీలంకలో దేశంలోని ప్రసిద్ధ దేవి ఆలయం గురించి ఎవరికీ తెలియదు. ఇంటర్నెట్లో కూడా చాలా ప్రామాణికమైన సమాచారం అందుబాటులో లేదు. ఈ ఆలయం తూర్పు తీరంలో ప్రసిద్ధి చెందిన ట్రింకోమలీ పట్టణంలో ఉందని చెబుతారు. 17వ శతాబ్దంలో ఈ ద్వీపంపై దండెత్తిన పోర్చుగీసు వారు తమ ఓడ నుండి దేవి ఆలయాన్ని పూర్తిగా నేలమట్టం చేశారని ట్రింకోమలీ పూజారి శ్రీ శంకరీ దేవి ఆలయం చెబుతోంది.

Seetha Amman Temple is located approximately 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) from Hakgala Botanical Garden and 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) from Nuwara Eliya. The temple is located in the village of Seetha Eliya (also known as Sita Eliya). This place is believed to be the site where Sita was held captive by Asur Samrat (Devil King) Ravana, and where she prayed daily for Rama to come and rescue her in the Hindu epic, Ramayana.[1][2] On the rock face across the stream are circular depressions said to be the footprints of Lord Hanuman.

Sita Amman temple is the only Hindu Temple which dedicated to Princess Sita in Sri Lanka. This is one of the important Ramayana related places of Sri Lanka. Sita Amman Temple is located in Nuwara Eliya. Sita Eliya area (10 Min drive from Nuwara Eliya Town) close to Ashoka Vatika (This Ashoka Vatika has converted as a Hakgala Botanic Gardens Sri Lank). Sita Amman temple is one of the important Sri Lanka Ramayana Sites Which we can find when travelling along the Ramayana Trail Tour Sri Lanka from Kandy towards Ella via Nuwara Eliya.
Significance of Seetha Amman temple
The soil here is black in colour. According to the epic of Ramayana it is the believed that Hanumanji burnt this area before he left Sri Lanka. The foot prints of Lord Hanuman’s can be seen even today close to the stream close to the Sita Amman Temple.
Legend related to Sita Amman temple
With reference to the Ramayana proof of Sri Lanka it is believed that the Sita devi was kept captive at this site by King Ravana. There is a stream by the side of the temple where that runs from the hill, catered to the needs of Sita Devi during her stay at Ashok Vatika. She is also said to have bathed in this stream. About a century ago of three idols were discovered in the stream.

Now there is temple for Lord Rama, Sitadevi, Lakshmana, and Hanuman by the side of this stream. It is interesting to note that foot prints akin to Lord Hanuman’s are found by this river and some are of small size while some are of large size.

Sita Amman Temple Timings / Opening Hours
Sita amman temple open 365 days Temple has two puja timings. One is in the morning and other one is in the evening. Morning time is from 8 a.m. to 1 p. m and evening time is from 2 p.m. to 6.30 p.m.
Entrance fees of Ramayana Sites of Sri Lanka
No entrance fees for most of the Hindu Temples and other Ramayana related places in Sri Lanka but you may donate a reasonable amount if you wish. If you participate for the Puja / services, you need to buy a ticket (Approximately 100 – 200 Sri Lankan Rupees). As the temple doesn’t charge an entry fee, the place can be visited throughout the year.
