Scouting Singapore - Moments In Time Ep 1

Join me in a new series as we take a journey around the world together, and share about photography, travel, people, food, experiences, and everything that happens between the frames I capture. Subscribe to this channel for new episodes each week.

In this episode, I arrive in Singapore and connect with my old friend and talented commercial and cityscape photographer Edward Adios as we discuss some of the fascinating things that make the Lion City so unique. In the process, I also point out some of the best photography spots around Marina Bay and The Helix Bridge. I meet up with local documentary and street photographer Mindy Tan as she talks about her passion for capturing the rich history of Singapore before explaining her street photography techniques in Little India. Then, along with Edward, I setup to capture the incredible Marina Bay Sands Laser Show during the Blue Hour.

Singapore’s Hidden Treasures - Moments In Time Ep 2

Return to Singapore for Episode 2 of my new series where we’ll pay a quick visit to one of my favorite street food stalls on Clarke Quay. Then, to beat the midday heat wave, we’ll head over to capture a stunning water feature called the Rain Oculus in one of the most beautiful shopping malls in the world–The Marina Bay Sands Mall. Here I break down some of the benefits of shooting raw vs jpeg, whether you’re shooting on your digital camera or smartphone device.

After that, my director surprises me with a visit to a new location, Haw Par Villa, where I’ll be faced with a unique and fairly ridiculous photography challenge in one of the strangest places I’ve ever visited.

We’ll wrap things up overlooking Singapore Downtown, to shoot from the Peninsula Excelsior Hotel where my friend Edward Adios brings along a collection of vintage Fujifilm Film cameras and an assortment of film. Together we’ll shoot the sunset and blue hour cityscape, side-by-side using both film and digital cameras, before a visit to the film processing lab to learn the steps for developing positive film and ending with an amazing Flickr Meetup in the heart of Singapore.

In this Moments in Time series, we take a journey around the world together, and share about photography, travel, people, food, experiences, and everything that happens between the frames I capture. Subscribe to this channel for new episodes each week.

Street Photography in Malaysia - Moments In Time Ep 3

Join me in Kuala Lumpur for Episode 3 where we take a double-decker limousine bus over the border from Singapore to Malaysia. The scenery quickly changes from a metropolitan cityscape to a lush countryside until we arrive in the densely populated Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur.

Local photographer, Yaman Ibrahim, shares his passion for street photography with us and some of his favorite spots in the historic old quarter. Then he takes me outside my comfort zone to shoot some colorful characters around the secondhand market, Pasar Karat, near the famous Petaling Street.

No visit to Kuala Lumpur would truly be complete without some cityscape photography. Learn how I use Jedi Mind Control and ninja tactics to inconspicuously set up my tripod, where no tripods are allowed, and capture the rapidly changing sunset and blue hour light over the world-famous Petronas Twin Towers.

In this Moments in Time series, we take a journey around the world together, and share about photography, travel, people, food, experiences, and everything that happens between the frames I capture. Subscribe to this channel for new episodes each week.

Japan Before Dawn - Moments in Time Ep 7

This is our biggest episode yet as I explore and photograph some of my favorite locations in Kyoto, Nara, and Osaka during a beautiful sakura season beginning with the seemingly infinite rows of vermilion torii gates in the Fushimi Inari Shrine. A very early morning ensures I have the entire shrine all to myself as the lanterns light the beautiful paths.

Next, I connect with my friend and local tour guide Yumi and we take a train together to Nara to explore some of Japan’s most important cultural and UNESCO World Heritage sites like Todai-ji temple. But Nara isn’t just known for the ancient architecture, it’s also famous for the thousands of nearly domesticated local deer that have become a tourist attraction themselves.

After another very early morning photographing the famous Bamboo Forest in Arashiyama, we quickly learn just how busy this location becomes when mainstream tourists arrive. Thankfully arriving super early ensures that I’m able to get the shot, and before heading to Osaka, I share about every piece of gear that’s in my camera bag.

In Osaka, I meet up with local landscape photographer Hideaki Sumi and we photograph a great spot at Osaka Castle where the Cherry Blossoms surround and frame the castle. We stay through a beautiful sunset and blue hour until we are able to get the perfect shot with the best light.

In this Moments in Time series, we take a journey around the world together, and share about photography, travel, people, food, experiences, and everything that happens between the frames I capture. Join our Moments in Time Flickr community for some exclusive content being released next week or tune back in on Tuesday, August 13th for a new episode from the tulip fields of the Netherlands, as we begin the European portion of this adventure.

Exploring Caves in Malaysia - Moments In Time Ep 4

Join me in Kuala Lumpur for Episode 4 of Moments in Time where we strategically planned our accommodations so we could have an epic city view at sunrise all to ourselves. But after a very early wake-up, things don’t quite go according to plan. We blearily venture through a maze of stairwells and abandoned hallways to find a path to the top, but sadly, we make it too late when the sun has already risen. Thankfully, we return the next morning and our shot works out even better than originally planned–capturing all of Kuala Lumpur, with great leading lines and perfect blue hour light.

When the sunrise rooftop adventure is over, my longtime friend and KL native Travel, Landscape and Astro Photographer, Grey Chow, takes us outside the city center to explore one of Malaysia’s biggest attractions and Unesco World Heritage Site, the Batu Caves. Freshly painted with controversy, we’ll climb the 272 stairs to access this historic location during the midday sun to avoid the crowds and capture rays of light streaming into the cave from above. Watch as I use my pigeon whispering skills to coax them into position after hours of waiting to capture the perfect frame. After a long day of waiting on birds, we’ll head to Old Klang road for some cold beers and unique local street food.

In this Moments in Time series, we take a journey around the world together, and share about photography, travel, people, food, experiences, and everything that happens between the frames I capture. Subscribe to this channel for new episodes each week.

Tokyo Photo Locations - Moments In Time Ep 5

Join me in Tokyo for Episode 5 of Moments in Time where we fly from Kuala Lumpur to one of my favorite cities in the world, Tokyo, Japan. In transit, I share some of my techniques for getting all of my camera gear packed up and on the plane for international flights. I navigate and give tips for Tokyo’s sometimes confusing, but well connected, subway system as we visit my favorite of Tokyo’s many Japanese gardens, Kiyosumi. After some relaxing “nature bathing,” we’ll visit another one of Tokyo’s many attractions–Shibuya Crossing–where the crowd itself has become an attraction. It can be an overwhelming place so I share my favorite vantage point to capture all the action.

We pay a visit the Photo History Museum in Fujifilm’s Tokyo headquarters to speak with Sam Minami, the man responsible for bringing Fujifilm’s long legacy of color film into the new era as film simulations in their line of digital cameras. But no visit to Tokyo would be complete without some cityscape photography, so we head to Ginza for some architectural shots with my good friend, Kenji Yamamura, in the Tokyo International Forum Building. He gives us the local scoop on a unique reflection shot that’s somewhat obscure. We use some non-traditional tactics to capture the “Money Shot” (literally a tripod made of coins) before getting some sushi at one of my favorite restaurants in Ginza.

In this Moments in Time series, we take a journey around the world together, and share about photography, travel, people, food, experiences, and everything that happens between the frames I capture. Subscribe to this channel for new episodes each Tuesday.

Best Tulip Photos In Amsterdam - Moments In Time Ep 8

It’s tulip photo mania in the Netherlands and in this episode we fly to Amsterdam to explore and photograph some of the largest tulip fields in the world with local Dutch Photographer Albert Dros. Albert and I share some of our best photography techniques while shooting in endless rows of beautiful multi-colored flowers. I even have the opportunity to chat with a local tulip grower about the impact of tourism on the health of both the flowers themselves and the tulip and bulb trade industry. An epic sunset along the rows of tulips rounds out an awesome day.

Have you ever worn a Pikachu onesie? Well, it turns out that my friends and talented commercial photographers Richard Terborg and Adrian Sommeling had something devious planned for me when I decided to present them with a photography challenge in Amsterdam. Let’s just say that the results of me trying to be a model were hilarious, even without wearing the Pokemon costume.

In this Moments in Time series, we take a journey around the world together, and share about photography, travel, people, food, experiences, and everything that happens between the frames I capture. Exploring Hidden Tokyo - Moments In Time Ep 6

Join me for Part Two of our visit to Tokyo in Episode 6 of Moments in Time where I explore the Odaiba waterfront along with my good friend, Giovanni Piliarvu, and we photograph a lesser-known Tokyo landmark, the Rainbow Bridge, during blue hour. After that, he’ll share with us some of his favorite out of the way spots gained over the last decade of exploring Tokyo’s hidden back alleys.

In Japan, dinner and drinks with colleagues is pretty common and I had the privilege of joining some of Fujifilm's core team to discuss their stance on the constantly changing market of photography.

Before hopping the bullet train to Kyoto, I couldn’t miss the chance to experience the infamous and wildly entertaining Robot Restaurant in Tokyo’s Kabuki-cho area, where I was officially crowned the one true Robot King.
