Medina as Non Muslim - Solo Travel in Saudi Arabia المدينة المنورة المملكة العربية السعودية أجنبي
Medina is the second holiest city in Islam after Mecca, and one of the most visited places in Saudi Arabia. As a non Muslim, it was unsure whether I could travel to the city center, reading conflicting reports beforehand. I decided to check for myself, and found that I was allowed to visit everywhere, except inside the main mosque, the Al Masjid an Nawabi.
Medina is known as the City of the Prophet, and considered the second holiest site in Islam after Mecca. This is where Islam’s main Prophet, Muhammad, lived and was eventually laid to rest. All able Muslims are supposed to make the journey to Medina and Mecca once in their life.

Saudi Arabia has long been off limits to foreign tourists and travelers. Since a few months, however, it’s possible to visit the country on a tourist visa. I made use of this opportunity and traveled solo to Saudi Arabia for 2 weeks, including Riyadh, the Edge of the World, Medina, Al Ula, Umluj, Jeddah and the Red Sea coast.
Saudi Arabia is mostly known in the ‘Western world’ for its petroleum export, the birthplace of the religion of Islam, and unfortunately also poor human rights record. But as I discover there is much more to this massive country than first meets the eye. In these series I hope to give a glimpse into what was once an almost ‘forbidden place’ for independent travelers, and is now open for visitors from around the world.

North Korea's Empty Spaceship-like Ryugyong Hotel
The Ryugyong Hotel, is an unfinished 105-story, 330-meter-tall (1,080 ft) pyramid-shaped skyscraper in Pyongyang, North Korea. Its name (capital of willows) is also one of the historical names for Pyongyang. The building is also known as the 105 Building, a reference to its number of floors. The building has been planned as a mixed-use development, which would include a hotel. The building is currently listed by Guinness World Records as being the tallest unoccupied building in the world.
Construction began in 1987 but was halted in 1992 as North Korea entered a period of economic crisis after the fall of the Soviet Union. After 1992 the building stood topped out, but without any windows or interior fittings. In 2008 construction resumed, and the exterior was completed in 2011. It was planned to open the hotel in 2012, the centenary of Kim Il-sung's birth. A partial opening was announced for 2013, but this was canceled. In 2018, a LED display was fitted to one side, which was used to show animation and movie scenes. The building remains unopened.

Saudi Arabia - Jeddah Street Life
Jeddah is the second largest city of Saudi Arabia. Located at the Red Sea and being the most important starting point for the hadj it has a more international atmosphere than Riyadh and is therefore more liberal. The video clip shows impressions of the city.

Jeddah is getting more and more modern now. When you're here, remember to check out the new Jeddah Waterfront which is a huge esplanade with walkways, bicycle lanes, art installations, and even an open air performance stage!
The sea is blue, and the food is great. Definitely not what I expect from this big city in the heart of Saudi Arabia
Also in this episode, we explored Corniche, Balad (the old and new city), Masjid Qisos (where they chop off limbs of criminals - not commonly practiced now, but you can see it occasionally still), and had an amazing lamb mandi - a Yemeni food - in Saddah Restaurant
