Jeddah is the second largest city of Saudi Arabia. Located at the Red Sea and being the most important starting point for the hadj it has a more international atmosphere than Riyadh and is therefore more liberal. The video clip shows impressions of the city.

In this video of Living the Jo Life, we visit the old town, Al Balad in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Located next to the Red Sea, Al Balad, a World Heritage Site, used to be the gateway to Makkah for Muslim pilgrims arriving by sea. Al Balad is known for its historic buildings, often built of coral stone with colored wooden bay windows and balconies (rawashin) dating back more than 400 years. Some of the historic buildings are open to the public and have their own names, e.g. Bait Nassif, Bait Matbouli, and Bait Baeshen. In Al Balad, you will also find one of the oldest mosques, Al Shafie Mosque, dating back about 1400 years. Once the sun sets, all the street markets come alive. Here you can buy all sorts of material, gold jewelry, perfumes, dates, meat, fruit and vegetables, and much more. There are also a number of nicely decorated cafes serving cakes, juices, ice cream and of course Arabic coffee and dates. We had a fantastic time exploring Al Balad and we can highly recommend a visit to this exotic and vibrant part of Jeddah.

Pakistanis in Saudi Arabia are either Pakistani people who live in Saudi Arabia even though having been born outside Saudi Arabia or are Saudi Arabian-born, but have Pakistani roots. By Pakistani roots, this could mean roots linking back to Pakistan or Pakistani diaspora or South Asia. Many Pakistani army officers and soldiers also serve in Saudi Arabia and train the Saudi military cadets. According to a 2021 estimate, 2,4 million Pakistanis live and work in Saudi Arabia as of 2021.

Culture
There are numerous restaurants, shops and cultural activities in Saudi Arabia which cater to the Pakistani diaspora. In Jeddah's Azizia district, a large Pakistani community is present due the close proximity of Pakistan International School in Jeddah. Azizia district is home to numerous Pakistani food outlets and shops. Sharfia and Baghdadia district are other districts with significant Pakistani communities. Similarly, Al Shemaisy and Al Manfuha are areas with a substantial number of amenities related to the Pakistani community i.e. Pakistani food outlets, embroidery, groceries etc. A Pakistani diaspora exists on a smaller scale throughout Saudi Arabia

Education
To meet the requirement of the education, there are Pakistani schools in large cities of Saudi Arabia. They are known as International Schools with the name of the city comes after where the school is situated. They follow Pakistani national curriculum apart from Pakistan International School (English Section), Jeddah, which follow British Curriculum.

Reportedly, in four months from late 2016 to early 2017, Saudi Arabia deported at least 40,000 Pakistani nationals due to visa issues and violation of the rules of residence and work.In addition, an estimated 250,000 Pakistanis have been deported from various countries in a three year period from 2012 to 2015. Of them, 131,643 were deported from Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia Travel - One Day in Riyadh ???????? المملكة العربية السعودية مدينة الرياض السفر سياحة أجنبي

Saudi Arabia has long been off limits to foreign tourists and travelers. Since a few months, however, it’s possible to visit the country on a tourist visa. I made use of this opportunity and traveled to Saudi Arabia for 2 weeks, including Riyadh, the Edge of the World, Jeddah, Medina, Al Ula, Umluj, and the Red Sea coast.

In this video I travel to Riyadh, the capital city in the center of the country. After visiting a mosque for Friday prayer and eating lunch with the locals, I tour to modern shopping malls, museums, traditional bazaars, a construction site with migrant workers, the famous Sky Bridge Kingdom Tower, and finally the Riyadh Season Festival, designed to promote tourism and culture. While I spent almost 3 days in Riyadh, I comprised the video to make it into one single day.

Saudi Arabia is mostly known in the ‘Western world’ for its petroleum export, the birthplace of Islam, and unfortunately also poor human rights record. But as I discover there is much more to this massive country than first meets the eye. In these series I hope to give a glimpse into what was once an almost ‘forbidden place’ for independent travelers, and is now open for visitors from around the world.
