Paradise on Earth! | Exploring São Tomé

Welcome to São Tomé. In December of 2019 and with the help of Expedition Earth, I travelled to São Tomé Island. We went on a recon mission to scout the island for future tours. This island was recommended to us by one of Johan's friends and wow this is a lost paradise, to say the least!

We traversed the island for 16 days and despite the Island being reasonably small, we still did not get around to everything. This island has so much to over and see and the history on this remote island is beyond belief. Enjoy this video and I hope everyone gets a chance to travel to this beautiful island called São Tomé!

Banana Beach in Principe, Sao Tome and Principe

This is Príncipe’s most famous beach – perfect for swimming, with white sand curving in a banana shape around turquoise waters. The easiest way to visit is to stay at Belo Monte. Another way of exploring the beach is on a 25-minute boat trip from Bom Bom.

There is hardly a shoreline quieter and perfect for a-relax-and-reflect getaway spot than Banana Beach on the tiny island of Principe, off the western coast of Africa. Its clear, shallow waters, forest-fringed edges and, quite likely, no other tourist in sight character are as inspiring as they are energizing. Some of the world’s best deep-sea fishing waters are off the coast of Príncipe.

Take a picnic and snorkel set to easily accessible Banana Beach.

You can also hitch a ride or hike to Belo Monte and walk down from Belo Monte in about 25 minutes, via the miradouro (viewpoint). A famous ad for Bacardi rum was filmed at this beach. On a recent visit we came across pieces of tortoiseshell, pointing to the fact that for all its UNESCO Biosphere status, turtles are still being hunted here.

São Tomé and Príncipe, officially the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe (Portuguese: República Democrática de São Tomé e Príncipe), is an island country in the Gulf of Guinea, off the western equatorial coast of Central Africa. It consists of two archipelagos around the two main islands of São Tomé and Príncipe, about 140 km (87 mi) apart and about 250 and 225 km (155 and 140 mi) off the northwestern coast of Gabon.

The islands were uninhabited until their discovery by Portuguese explorers in the 15th century. Gradually colonized and settled by the Portuguese throughout the 16th century, they collectively served as a vital commercial and trade center for the Atlantic slave trade. The rich volcanic soil and proximity to the Equator made São Tomé and Príncipe ideal for sugar cultivation, followed later by cash crops such as coffee and cocoa; the lucrative plantation economy was heavily dependent upon imported African slaves. Cycles of social unrest and economic instability throughout the 19th and 20th centuries culminated in peaceful independence in 1975. São Tomé and Príncipe has since remained one of Africa's most stable and democratic countries.

With a population of 201,800 (2018 official estimate),[11][5] São Tomé and Príncipe is the second-smallest African sovereign state after Seychelles, as well as the smallest Portuguese-speaking country. Its people are predominantly of African and mestiço descent, with most practicing Catholic Christianity. The legacy of Portuguese rule is also visible in the country's culture, customs, and music, which fuse European and African influences. São Tomé and Príncipe is a founding member state of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries.

Principe is the smallest and least developed of the two islands that make up the country Sao Tome & Principe.
If you had the thought that the main island Sao Tome was unexplored and beautiful, wait until you visit Principe.
Of the 100+ countries I now have been to, Principe is the closest you will get to an untouched paradise in the world.

São Tomé e Príncipe as ilhas do chocolate

website:
This is my country came with me to get to know it. Sao Tome and Principe is a small country, consisting of two beautiful islands located right in the middle of Golf of Guinea, just a few miles of the coast of Africa.
As we´re really close to the equator, here it is always warm, which is very good to travel around the island and discover all the beatiful things that we have to offer.
Most of the island's is coverd by a huge forest that we call obô and it is from it that we collect most of our food... And this is also the home of many animal and plant species that only live here because of our sustainable way of planting.
But to discover other incredible creatures we have to visit the beautiful water that surround our islands.
Here we can find our magnificent beaches and it is from this beautiful blue sea that our ever-fresh fish comes from which we eat every day...

São Tomé and Príncipe, the least visited country in Africa - Highlights of Príncipe island

The African islands of São Tomé and Príncipe are nestled in the warm equatorial waters of the Gulf of Guinea and are often forgotten by most travelers. Over the last few years, the country has become a true paradise for eco-tourism with its expansive lush jungle, love for slow food, picture-perfect beaches, and jaw-dropping mountainous volcanic landscape.
The pristine island of Príncipe is home to only 7,000 inhabitants and offers unrivaled natural landscapes: from incredible snorkeling/diving and paradise-like sandy beaches to enjoy all on your own, to sweeping vistas over the needle-like volcanic spires (the most inspiring of which is Baia das Agulhas or Bay of Needles) and enormous waterfalls (such as Oque Pipi), to the remains of old plantations (like Roca Sundy and Roca Paciencia). There is no better way to recover from modern life than to spend a few days in Praia Sundy which will spoil all your senses. To top it all of, the people of Príncipe will charm all the visitors with their warmth, lively culture and unique cuisine.
