I had always been curious about Sanya City and Hainan Island. I finally had the opportunity to visit Sanya City and I'm so glad I did! Many people refer to Hainan Island as China's Hawaii. After living in Hawaii for five years myself, I can definitely see the similarities. Follow me as I explore Sanya and the surrounding area of Hainan Island China.

Embark on a Fascinating Journey Through Sanya, China's Hawaii | China Walking Tour 4K HDR
Sanya situated along the coast of the South China Sea is a beautiful tourist hub in China.
It is well-known for its picturesque, clean white sand beaches, palm trees, warm temperature, clear blue sea, wide-variety of seafood and a delicious array of tropical fruits.

The city of Sanya stands tall as one of the most favored tourist destinations for visitors from within as well as outside the country.
Best Time to Sanya Hainan
The tourist destination of Sanya China enjoys a tropical climate, and therefore it is warm throughout the year-round.
The yearly average temperature is about 28 degrees Celsius with June being the hottest month and February being the coldest. Sometimes Typhoons occur between May to September.
Peak season
The winter months between December to February is cool and pleasant, and therefore it is the best time for cultural adventure in Sanya. However, the sea can be quite cold in the mornings and evenings during the winter and you may not be able to enjoy the beach in this period of time. Hotels can be quite expensive in the peak season.
Off season
The summer months between April to June are quite hot and sultry, with temperature as high as 36 degrees Celsius. However, throughout the year, the mornings and evenings are pleasant due to the cool ocean breeze. Summers are indeed the best time for visitors who enjoy a strong sun and taking a sunbath to get tan along with low flight rates and hotel tariffs.
Sanya is an urban district in the very south of the Chinese island of Hainan and an absolutely heavenly place.
It is hard to imagine that once disagreeable officials and disgraced poets were exiled here.
The resort is surrounded on three sides by mountains densely covered with rain-forest, and on the fourth — it is washed by the warm sea.
By world standards, it is completely a young city. The first travelers appeared in Sanya only in the early 90's.
But now there is everything for the chic rest — cozy beaches, serene lagoons, beautiful nature and modern tourist infrastructure.
Why was the Nanshan Temple built?
Construction of the Nanshan Temple was completed in April 1998 to mark the 2000th anniversary of the arrival of Buddhism to China.
With the rapid urban growth on the island, the temple quickly became popular and receives many local and foreign visitors each year.
The Nanshan Temple
In Chinese history, the Nanshan Temple is really new. In fact, it only dates from the late 1990's.
However, the history behind it started over 2,000 years ago.
This temple was built in a beautiful setting on the seacoast and has become known as the Temple between the sky and sea.
The Nanshan Temple is a Buddhist compound located about 25 miles west of the city of Sanya, on the island of Hainan, in southern China.
Nanshan, which means Southern Mountain, is part of the Buddhism Culture Park-- one of the three parks that make up the Nanshan Culture Tourism Zone.
The other two parks are the Blessing and Longevity Park and Hainan Custom Culture Park. The Nanshan Temple is China's southernmost Buddhist shrine.
It is famous for housing a massive gold statue of Buddha and a statue of a Buddhist deity, over 300 feet high, built upon the sea.
One side of the statue faces the park and the other two face the sea, as a symbol of blessings and protection. Construction began in 1999 and finished in 2005. A concrete pedestal with three terraces was built for the statue. The religious figure was made mostly out of copper and is painted in white and gold. The base of the statue is connected to the avenue through a long bridge and is open to visitors.
Sanya International Duty Free City
Compared with the duty-free shops in Hong Kong, Beijing and other places, the price is not great. The Duty Free City is the world's largest single duty-free shop so you can imagine the richness of its products.
The location of Sanya Duty Free is relatively remote to Sanya downtown, but there are free shuttle buses to hotels in the Haitang Bay area.

We were invited to Hainan island in China by Sanyas tourism board. It intrigued us as Sanya is not a typical Chinese travel destination for western tourists. It is a tropical paradise and Chinas answer to Hawaii. This is an undiscovered gem and importantly has a visa waiver program for Hainan island.
When I think of China, I don't think of beaches but thats exactly what we Sanya in China has beautiful beaches.

Sanya is a prefecture-level city in Hainan Province, referred to as Ya, or Yazhou in ancient times, or Lucheng, and is located at the southernmost tip of Hainan Island. Sanya borders Lingshui County to the east, Ledong County to the west, Baoting County to the north, and South China Sea to the south. Sanya has a total land area of 1921 square kilometers and a total sea area of 3,226 square kilometers. It is 91.6 kilometers long from east to west, 51 kilometers wide from north to south, and has four districts under its jurisdiction. According to the seventh census data, as of 0:00 on November 1, 2020, the permanent population of Sanya City is 1031396
Sanya is an international tourist city with tropical seaside scenery and is also known as Oriental Hawaii. On June 14, 2016, the Chinese Academy of Sciences released the Research Report on China's Livable Cities, and Sanya's Livable Index ranked third among 40 cities across the country.
In 2020, Sanya City will achieve a gross regional product (GDP) of 69.541 billion yuan, an increase of 3.1% over 2019 at comparable prices. Among them, the added value of the primary industry was 7.916 billion yuan, an increase of 2.2%; the added value of the secondary industry was 11.330 billion yuan, an increase of 3.0%; the added value of the tertiary industry was 50.295 billion yuan, an increase of 3.2%. The three industrial structure adjustments were 11.4:16.3:72.3.

The Hawaii of China is called Sanya, located in Hainan island, and it´s the paradise of the country...
Some of you may not know about the tropical Island of Hainan, Sanya, and it is more well known in Asia than in any other continente. Sanya, is known as the Hawaii of China, and there are a lot of reasons for that, such as the warm climate, its tropical location and the many green areas and mountains.
Anyway in case you are planning a Sanya trip, the Hawaii of China, we have made a short list of the top 5 things to do in Sanya and if you are not then here you have 5 reasons to visit Sanya in Hainan Province. Best Sanya attractions:
1) Guanyin of Nanshan: Probably the most famous monument of the city. All the images you have seen of Sanya are from this place. We talked about it in the blog, but you should definetly visit it in the morning, or you find too many people there. Near the Guanyin of Nanshan, you will also find the Nanshan temple, which is picture perfect.
2) Wuzhizho island: The beautiful Island of Wuzhizho offers many interesting and fun activities, and it´s the perfect place to stay for a whole day and enjoy it with friends and family. Although this place is beautiful and sure it has some photogenic spots, it´s more known for giving you the chance to enjoy a lot of water activities, like Scuba diving or snorkeling.
3) Sanya Bay: The center of Sanya, it´s perfect for a walk, enjoy some shopping or try some delicious chinese food, here you will also find the view of Phoenix island, which by the way, it is the best spot in Sanya to take pictures of the sunset.
4) Yanoda Rain Forest Ppark and Yalong Bay: The most tropical green areas of the island, both are natural parks surounded by nature. Yalong bay location has many outstanding viewponts, and in the other side, you will do all kind of fun nature activities in Yanoda.
5) Romance park: It is a more like touristic place, but still a place to have some fun and discover more about chinese culture! A lot of dancing and also many local activities.

Hainan Haihua Island, China (the world's largest artificial tourist island with a flower shape)
Haihua Island, Hainan, China is an artificial island and the world’s largest artificial tourist island. It is located in the bay area between Paipu Port and Yangpu Port, Danzhou City, Hainan Province, starting from Paipu Town in the south and Baimajing Town in the north. , About 600 meters from the coast, with a total span of about 6.8 kilometers.
The island is composed of three independent offshore islands with a reclaimed area of about 7.8 square kilometers. The flower-shaped island in the middle is in the shape of Hainan’s provincial flower bougainvillea. The islands 2 and 3 on both sides are in the shape of waves. Named China Hainan Sea Flower Island.
Haihua Island No. 1 in Hainan, China is a one-stop international tourist resort that integrates “food, lodging, travel, shopping, entertainment, and cultural activities”; No. 2 and No. 3 islands are residential functional areas with complete infrastructure and public services.
Traveling in China | Atlantis Sanya | Hainan Island, China
We went visiting the beautiful city of Sanya, located in Hainan Island, also known as the Hawaii of China. This country has many beautiful places to visit and beaches are not the exception.
We stayed in the extraordinary Atlantis Sanya, which also has landmark resorts in the Bahamas and Dubai, the property covers 540,000 square meters overlooking Haitang Beach and the South China Sea.
With a 52-story tower as its centerpiece, the Atlantis Sanya resort’s architecture is meant to evoke a contemporary vision of what the mythical city of Atlantis might have looked like.
The impressive aquarium contains over 13.5 million liters of seawater and is home to 86,000 marine creatures representing over 270 species.
Sanya is a magical place, absolutely recommended for family, couples or even solo trips! We had the chance to visit just a few places, but Hainan has definitely more to offer, see and enjoy.
