IMAX Greece: Volcanic eruption Santorini

Clip from the IMAX documentary Greece: Secrets of the past (from MacGillivray Freeman).

The eruption at Santorini (Greece) is considered to be one of the largest in history, and certainly the most massive volcanic explosion in the last 10,000 years.

Pyroclastic flows, one of the most destructive of all volcanic processes, shattered the island of Santorini in 1646 BC.

Pyroclastic flows are terrifying avalanches of gas, rock and lava that can attain temperatures above 1,000 degrees and move at over 100 miles per hour, following the topography of the land. The flows essentially knock down, carry away, shatter or burn down any object they encounter, leaving nothing but destruction in their wake.

The boom was heard as far away as Sweden. Tsunamis rocked the ocean afterwards and the surrounding areas were dark for months.

With some 7 cubic miles of magma expelled, the volcano collapsed, leaving behind a massive crater, an unimaginably huge plume of ash and the resultant pyroclastic flows. A rush of hot, sticky mud and cataclysmic rock bombs were ejected out of the crater. Within about a week's time, some 70 meters of volcanic deposits had buried Akrotiri, perfectly preserving the town's frescoes, pots, pans and structures exactly as they were left behind.

Santorini | The history

Santorini | The history : Santorini is a scenic volcanic island in the middle of the Aegean Sea, about 250 kilometres southwest of Athens. The island is what is left of a colossal volcanic explosion 3,500 years ago that wiped out a flourishing prehistoric civilization.

The original name of Santorini is Thera, and by that name it was settled anew in classical times and prospered through the ages to be an important centre of Aegean shipping and trade. Santorini is a corruption of Santa Irene, or Saint Irene, which is what the Venetians called it in the Middle Ages.

Meet Santorini: The Volcanic Island

Nowhere else in the Mediterranean does history, legend and beauty join in such dramatic surroundings as on this one small island.

About 3,500 years ago, the eruption of this dramatic volcanic island, brought about the beginning of the end of the Minoan civilisation.

Sailing into the great sea-filled crater is one of the great experiences of the Aegean and makes the legend of Atlantis seem entirely plausible. The huge cliffs of banded pumice surrounding the Caldera are undeniably spectacular.

With its apocalyptic past and extraordinary landscapes, Santorini provides a unique and fascinating journey.

The volcano treasure of Santorini

Santorini, officially Thira, is an island in the southern Aegean Sea, about 200 km southeast from mainland of Greece. It's the largest island of a small, circular archipelago, which bears the same name and is the remnant of a volcanic caldera. It forms the southernmost member of the Cyclades group of islands, with an area of approximately 73 km2 and a 2011 census population of 15,550. The municipality of Santorini includes the inhabited islands of Santorini and Therasia, as well as the uninhabited islands of Nea Kameni, Palaia Kameni, Aspronisi and Christiana. The total land area is 90.623 km2. Santorini is part of the Thira regional unit.

The island was the site of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in recorded history: the Minoan eruption, which occurred about 3,600 years ago at the height of the Minoan civilization. The eruption left a large caldera surrounded by volcanic ash deposits hundreds of metres deep. It may have led indirectly to the collapse of the Minoan civilization on the island of Crete, 110 km to the south, through a gigantic tsunami. Another popular theory holds that the Thera eruption is the source of the legend of Atlantis.

THE VOLCANO OF SANTORINI, GREECE, 1960

In the film we watch a visit to Nea Kameni of Thira, the active volcano of Santorini. Just four years before the film was shot, the great earthquake of 1956 had occurred, and the last eruption happened 10 years earlier, in 1950. We are watching the boatman who is leading the boat out of the port of Santorini and heading to the volcano. Then we see images from the Nea Kameni, the volcanic rocks and the many fumes from the crater of the volcano. The film closes with a sunset.

Greek island SANTORINI: Ancient city of THERA (9th century BC) #travel #santorini

Greek island of Santorini - tour of ancient Thera (or Thira), ancient Thera in the island of Santorini, a tour of ancient Thera in Greece. Let's go a for a walking tour around the ancient city of Thira (or ancient city of Thera) located in the island of Santorini, in Greece. Ancient Thera (Greek: Αρχαία Θήρα) is the name of an ancient perfectly round volcano island now known as Santorini island. Ancient Thera (Greek: Αρχαία Θήρα) was named after the mythical ruler of the island, Theras, and is known to have been inhabited by Greek Minoans as early as the 15th century BC when the volcano erupted resulting in a significant change to the shape of the island and killing many of the Minoan inhabitants. Starting in 1895, Friedrich Hiller von Gaertringen systematically investigated the city until 1904. Later excavations by N. Zapheiropoulos between 1961 and 1982, under the auspices of the Archaeological Society of Athens, unearthed the city's necropolis in Sellada. Findings from these excavations are on exhibit at the archaeological museum in Fira. Excavation work was again taken up between 1990 and 1994 under the leadership of Wolfram Hoepfner of the Free University of Berlin and resulted in a more precise understanding of the history of the southern Aegean.
Santorini (Greek: Σαντορίνη) is an island in the southern Aegean Sea, about 200 km (120 mi) southeast of Greece's mainland.
Santorini is one of the Cyclades islands in the Aegean Sea. It was devastated by a volcanic eruption in the 16th century BC, forever shaping its rugged landscape. The whitewashed, cubiform houses of its 2 principal towns, Fira and Oia, cling to cliffs above an underwater caldera (crater). They overlook the sea, small islands to the west and beaches made up of black, red and white lava pebbles.

Akrotiri PreHistoric city walk in Santorini island, Greece

Akrotiri (Greek: Ακρωτήρι) was a Cycladic Bronze Age settlement on the volcanic Greek island of Santorini (Thera).

The settlement was destroyed in the Theran eruption sometime in the 16th century BC and buried in volcanic ash, which preserved the remains of fine frescoes and many objects and artworks. Akrotiri has been excavated since 1967.

The earliest evidence for human habitation of Akrotiri can be traced back as early as the fifth millennium BC, when it was a small fishing and farming village. By the end of the third millennium, this community developed and expanded significantly. One factor for Akrotiri's growth may be the trade relations it established with other cultures in the Aegean, as evidenced in fragments of foreign pottery at the site. Akrotiri's strategic position on the primary sailing route between Cyprus and Minoan Crete also made it an important point for the copper trade, thus allowing it to become an important centre for processing copper, as proven by the discovery of moulds and crucibles there. Akrotiri's prosperity continued for about another 500 years; paved streets, an extensive drainage system, the production of high quality pottery and further craft specialization all point to the level of sophistication achieved by the settlement.

This all came to an end, however, in the 16th century BC with the volcanic eruption of Thera. There is a variety of dating evidence for the eruption, but its exact year is not known. Radiocarbon dating places it most probably between 1620 and 1530 BC, which is also in accord with the date range of 1570 to 1500 BC suggested by similarities of the material culture with other sites in the Aegean. Unusual growth patterns observed in tree rings in 1597, 1560, 1546 and 1544 BC are consistent with a major volcanic event in any of those years. The latter three dates might be the best candidates as they are also considered possible for Egyptian New Kingdom records that are thought to refer to the eruption.

The Akrotiri excavation site is of a Cycladic cultural settlement on the Greek island of Santorini, associated with the Minoan civilization due to inscriptions in Linear A, and close similarities in artifact and fresco styles. The excavation is named for a modern village situated on a hill nearby. The name of the site in antiquity is unknown.

Akrotiri was buried by the massive Theran eruption in the middle of the second millennium BC (during the Late Minoan IA period); as a result, like the Roman ruins of Pompeii after it, it is remarkably well-preserved. Frescoes, pottery, furniture, advanced drainage systems and three-story buildings have been discovered at the site.

The earliest excavations on the island of Santorini were conducted by French geologist F. Fouque in 1867, after some local people found old artifacts at a quarry. Later, in 1895–1900, the digs by German archeologist Baron Friedrich Hiller von Gaertringen revealed the ruins of ancient Thera on Mesa Vouno, which date from the archaic period, much after the Minoan eruption. Also, a little later, R. Zahn excavated in the locality of Potamos, near Akrotiri, under the auspices of the German Archaeological Institute at Athens. Read more
