EXPLORING SANTIAGO + WHAT TO EAT IN CHILE // CHILE TRAVEL VLOG

Welcome to Santiago, Chile in 2022! Exploring Santiago is a great way to start learning more about Chile and the people who live in it, so in this video we explore the city and eat tons of Chilean food!

We start our exploration of Santiago with a visit to Plaza de Armas before heading to Paseo Ahumada to check out the many shops that pop up along this busy pedestrian street. We also visit the Catedral de Santiago, Plaza de la Constitucion (Constitution Plaza) to see La Moneda Palace (the President's Palace), Mercado la Vega (La Vega Market), Santiago Mercado Central (Santiago's Central Market), and San Cristobal Hill.

In between these attractions we try as many foods as we can stomach in one day! We managed to get our hands on some delicious Chilean flan (we are pretty sure it was flan), crab empandadas, piscola, torta de mil hojas (cake of a thousand leaves), mote con huesillo, hamburguesa chilena from Antigua Fuente, and chorrillana. If you don't know what some of those foods are, enjoy watching us learn about them in this video as well!

We had a jam packed day exploring Chile's capital city, and we hope this video gives you some ideas of what to do and eat for your next visit to Santiago! If you are interested in seeing more videos from South America, hit subscribe to keep up with our adventures!

SANTIAGO, CHILE | BEST CAPITAL CITY IN SOUTH AMERICA?

First days in Santiago, Chile and only good things to say about the nation's capital. The weather in Santiago seems to be gorgeous and sunny every day and today I am heading to the Plaza de Armas in the center of Santiago, Chile to walk around and see more of the downtown, or centro area of the capital.

Things to do in Santiago, Chile:

The Santiago Metro is one of the most organized and user friendly public transportation systems in South America which makes travelling Santiago Chile very simple. Took the metro to the centro of Santiago and popped out at the Plaza de Armas and was amazed by the Chilean architecture. Grand buildings, beautiful greenery and busy but relaxing promenades to walk for hours.

So far, Santiago Chile has been one of my favourite capital cities in all of South America, even Latin America in general. Will be doing more things in Santiago Chile and travelling more of Chile so many videos of the capital and the south of Chile to come!

Chilean City with German Essences ???????? | Puerto Varas ????????

Puerto Varas, also known as La ciudad de las rosas or “the city of roses”, is a city located in the southern Chilean province of Llanquihue, in the Los Lagos Region.

Puerto Varas is famous for its German traditions and architecture from Germany, its natural environment, and its popularity as a tourist destination close to mountains, lakes, forests and national parks. It is located 20 kms from the city of Puerto Montt on the shore of Llanquihue Lake, the second largest lake in Chile and the Osorno and Calbuco Volcanoes. Puerto Varas is also close to town like Frutillar, Llanquihue and Puerto Octay.

The city was founded by German immigrants who settled the shores of Lake Llanquihue in 1853.

SANTIAGO CHILE…mixed feelings + graffiti EVERYWHERE from crazy riots + protests!

We decided to explore as much of Chile as possible, on our way to Antarctica. So, I planned a road trip from Santiago Chile down to Puerto Montt [~½ way down this crazy long + slender country]. In this week’s video, check out our wanderings around Chile’s capital, Santiago.

If I’m honest, it wasn’t quite what I was expecting. Don’t get me wrong, there were amazing parts, but there were also quite a few not so awesome parts. That’s why we left with mixed feelings. We’re glad we visited, but I don’t think we’ll be back nor will we recommend it as a top destination to go and visit.

The one thing we noticed immediately…was the GRAFFITI EVERYWHERE! So…we got to Googling. Apparently, there were massive riots + protests in Santiago + surrounding cities from 2019 - 2022. These demonstrations included defaming the majority of their buildings, infrastructure, + public statues. Fortunately, they elected a new president in 2021, who should bring about positive change for Santiago Chile + the country as a whole.

From Wikipedia…The protests are known in Chile as the Estallido Social (lit. social outburst) are a series of massive demonstrations and severe riots that originated in Santiago and spread to all regions of Chile, from Oct 2019 - Mar 2020. Civil protests took place throughout Chile in response to a raise in the Santiago Metro's subway fare, a probity crisis, cost of living, university graduate unemployment, privatization, and inequality prevalent in the country.

Visiting right after they reopened [the VID + dealing with that fiasco], + seeing the majority of the city tagged with graffiti didn’t help with first impressions, but I’m open to hearing your others’ opinions.

Santiago Chile highlights |
✨ Amazing street art
✨ Yummy food + cute cafes
✨ Exploring Las Condes
✨ Enjoying performance artists in the park
✨ Getting our booties kicked at Beatness Studio
✨ Practicing my Spanish
✨ Witnessing progress + change led by the people

Santiago Chile lowlights |
✨ Experiencing the MOST BRUTAL COVID entry requirements EVER! Huge HASSLE!
✨ Our Mobility Passes not working, so having to track down the Ministry of Health
✨ The grimiest + worst Centro Historico I’ve ever witnessed
✨ Getting yelled at for filming guys running a scam [I didn’t do it knowingly]
✨ Seeing people resale already used items
✨ A guy selling unsanitary chickens out of a trash bag without refrigeration
✨ The river water running downtown is completely brown
✨ The graffiti + remnants of vandalism everywhere [shadow side of progress]

???? TRAVEL TIP ???? |
I recommend staying in or near Las Condes, as it’s the nicer part of town. We didn’t stay here, and I wish we had. If you want something more rugged + rustic, there isn’t a lack of options. I don’t recommend staying right in the middle of Centro Historico though.

Enjoy this week’s video!

I’m beyond grateful for you + your support.

Chile - Santiago - City tour part 1 - South America, part 73 - Travel video - HD

Founded on February 14, 1541 by Pedro de Valdivia at the base of Cerro Santa Lucia along the bank of the muddy Mapocho river, Santiago was nearly destroyed by Mapuche Indians six months later. It was rebuilt over the years, surviving floods, earthquakes, wars and more natural calamities and is now one of the largest cities of South America. Santiago is Chile's cultural, commercial, industrial and political center.
Santiago is a cosmopolitan city, with ample restaurants, bars, hotels, shopping from tiny boutique and craft fair to giant shopping mall. There are cultural attractions such as art galleries, museums, theaters, opera and ballet, lively nightlife, plus parks, tree-lined streets and distinct neighborhoods. You'll see brand new high rises and large supermarkets next to old, shabby buildings. You'll have to fend off vendors and peddlers on the busses, but ride in peace and comfort on the subway system.

Exploring Santiago: A Journey Through Chile's Vibrant Capital

Exploring Santiago: A Journey Through Chile's Vibrant Capital:
WE recently found myself wandering the streets of Santiago, Chile, and I must say that the city left quite an impression on me. It's a place of contrasts, where the ancient and the modern seem to coexist in a sort of dance.
As we walked through the streets, We were struck by the grandeur of the architecture, with its towering buildings and ornate facades. But as I turned a corner, we found ourselves transported back in time to a simpler era, with charming colonial buildings lining the narrow streets.
The people of Santiago are just as varied as the architecture. They are warm and friendly, always eager to share a smile or a conversation. But they are also fiercely independent, with a sense of pride in their city and their country that is truly inspiring. But what really sets Santiago apart is its natural beauty. The city is surrounded by stunning mountains, and on a clear day, the view is absolutely breathtaking. And for those who want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city, there are plenty of parks and green spaces to explore.
In short, Santiago is a city of contradictions, where the past and present collide to create something truly unique. It's a place that must be seen to be believed, and I highly recommend adding it to your travel bucket list.
The Mall Costanera Center is a modern shopping center located in the heart of Santiago, Chile. It is the largest mall in Chile, with over 300 shops and restaurants spread across multiple levels.
One of the highlights of the mall is the Sky Costanera, an observation deck located on the 61st floor of the Costanera Center Tower, which offers panoramic views of the city.
The tallest building in Santiago, Chile is the Gran Torre Santiago (Great Santiago Tower), which stands at a height of 300 meters (984 feet) and has 64 floors.
The Palacio de La Moneda in Santiago, Chile is a neoclassical palace that serves as the seat of power for Chilean presidents. It's a place of immense historical significance as it was bombed during the 1973 military coup that ousted the democratically elected president, Salvador Allende. Today, the palace has been restored to its former glory and stands as a symbol of Chile's struggle for democracy and freedom. The Plaza de La Constitution in Santiago, Chile is a lively public square filled with iconic landmarks, including the Palacio de La Moneda, the Iglesia de La Merced, and a towering statue of General Manuel Baquedano. It's a place where locals gather to celebrate, protest, and express themselves, making it a living symbol of Chilean identity and pride. Whether you're strolling through the plaza or taking part in cultural events and festivals, you'll feel the energy of the city pulsing around you, immersing you in the vibrant culture and rich history of Santiago.
The San Cristobal Hill, one of the most iconic landmarks of Santiago, Chile. As you embark on this journey with us, get ready to immerse yourself in a breathtaking experience that will take you to the very top of the city. As you climb the hill, you'll be surrounded by lush greenery and a panoramic view of Santiago's skyline. You'll hear the sound of the wind rustling through the trees, and the distant hum of the city below. The air is crisp and fresh, filling your lungs with new energy and life.
As you continue your ascent, you'll see the famous statue of the Virgin Mary standing tall and proud, overlooking the city. This iconic symbol of Santiago is a testament to the city's deep spiritual roots, and a beacon of hope and inspiration to all who visit. At the top of the hill, you'll be treated to a stunning view of the Andes mountains, rising majestically in the distance. You'll see the city stretch out before you, a patchwork of colorful buildings, bustling streets, and vibrant life. But the view is just the beginning. San Cristobal Hill is a hub of activity, with something for everyone. Take a stroll through the beautifully manicured gardens, filled with exotic plants and flowers.
The Virgin Statue on San Cristobal Hill is an iconic landmark in Santiago, Chile. It is a massive statue of the Virgin Mary that stands atop the highest point in the city, overlooking the Santiago skyline. The statue, which stands at over 22 meters tall, was created by the Chilean sculptor Rebeca Matte in the early 20th century. It was erected as a symbol of peace and protection for the city, and has since become a beloved symbol of Santiago. To reach the statue, visitors can take a cable car or hike up the hill, which offers stunning views of the city below. At the top, visitors can admire the statue up close and take in the panoramic views of Santiago and the surrounding mountains. #Bigfootjourneys
