Exploring the San Ignacio Market, Cayo, Belize

The weekly Saturday market in San Ignacio, Cayo, is not only the source of groceries, but also the source of much social life in this small town. Learn more here:

The country’s largest market swells on Saturdays, with Friday a close, less crowded second. In addition to the wealth of fresh produce in season, colorful hand-woven fabrics and hammocks, traditional carved slate designs, and baskets are available, as well as Belizean wine and traditional foods from Belize and beyond in Central America. You can find local groups playing music, as well as a local pastor ready to save your soul in espanol.

While you’re there, you can sample probably the cheapest breakfast or lunch in town, prepared while you wait from tarp-covered market stalls. The more upscale eateries, where breakfast might cost all of $5 for a breakfast burrito that will carry you through until dinner, are located at the back of the market, overlooking the Belize River.

Best Market in Belize? San Ignacio!

I've always believed that the clearest window into the heart of any culture is the local central market, and this small but mighty market in San Ignacio is a must-see for any visitor.

San Ignacio|Belize on a budget?

San Ignacio Cayo is one of the most visited districts in Belize, mainly because it's one of the tourism hotspot in the Country. Cayo offers everything from exploring ancient Maya temples, to enjoying awesome resorts and accommodations, and the opportunity to indulge in local cuisines. This video shows a day filled with activity as we went to Cahal Pech Archeological site and finishing the afternoon having an amazing lunch at Papa Bens. Cahal Pech is one of many Archeological sites here in Belize and is widely explored by tourists and locals from all over. However Papa Bens is a local restaurant and Bar that offers nothing but the best service and great meals for a very affordable price. It's easy to say that you can't waste a day when exploring Cayo.

7 Reasons To Live In San Ignacio Belize

7 reasons to live in San Ignacio Belize

Looking to move to Central America? Belize is an excellent choice if you want to live in one of the most beautiful and eco-friendly countries in the world, with an abundance of activities and natural beauty. San Ignacio, which sits just outside of Belize City, is an ideal place to call home if you’re ready to experience all that Belize has to offer on your own terms. Here are 10 reasons why you should consider making this move.

1) Beautiful Village Surrounded by Rainforest
It’s safe to say that Central America isn’t on most people’s radar when it comes to choosing where they’ll retire, but there are plenty of good reasons why you should consider living in San Ignacio Belize. Located smack dab in between Mexico and Guatemala, central America is an adventure lover’s dream with countless treks and spots for caving just within striking distance. But what makes San Ignacio Belize so great? Let us count just a few of its many charms...

2) A Great Place for Adventure
Whether you’re into kayaking, jungle trekking, or just a low-key day on a pristine beach, Belize is full of opportunities for outdoor exploration. It’s also not known as Adventure Capital of Central America for nothing. From ziplining through jungles to cave tubing under mountain rivers, there are plenty of adventure options here too. It might be hot and humid but your heart will be pumping and you won’t have time to worry about that—you’ll be busy having fun!

3) Cheap and Low Cost of Living
The cost of living in Central America is some of world’s lowest, a huge draw for expats looking to relocate. Unlike other areas of Latin America, you can find reasonably priced apartments and homes on expat forums and websites like Craigslist. Houses can rent out for as little as $300 USD per month (though a more realistic estimate would be around $600 USD). It’s possible to get by on less than $1,000 USD per month, even if you’re living somewhere remote or expensive like San Ignacio. Many expats actually have no problem making upwards of $4,000 USD each month with work-from-home jobs that allow them ample time off to explore. It's all about finding balance.

4) Close to Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico and Nicaragua
While not as close to Guatemala and Honduras as we had once hoped, it is still easily accessible. You don’t need a passport or visa if you’re just passing through from those countries. There are direct flights from Mexico City and Managua, which both have very frequent flights. In fact there are more than 30 airlines that fly here at least once per week. Most of them connect with at least one other flight so you can always get where you need by changing planes in an airport like Houston or Miami.

5) Many Things To Do
One of my favorite things about living here is how easy it is to do fun stuff. Whether you like to go hiking, swimming, biking, kayaking or just enjoy exploring beautiful nature, there are many options available. For example: At Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary near San Ignacio Belize you can enjoy a leisurely hike through rainforest or explore cave system with underground waterfalls and deep pools.

6) Moderate Weather Conditions
One of our favorite things about living in San Ignacio is that we never need to bundle up. The year-round temperature averages between 69 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. This makes it easy for expats from cooler regions to feel comfortable here, even during rainy season. Plus, there’s very little humidity!

7) Safe Community with Very Little Crime
While there are quite a few crime stories that make their way around town, these typically represent one or two incidents and don’t reflect what happens most of the time. During my three years living here, I’ve only experienced one personal theft incident that was promptly resolved by local authorities. (My phone was stolen out of my backpack while riding my bike.) This low crime rate means you can walk around at night without worrying about being harassed or harmed.

From The Heart of Belize - St John's Cathedral

The St. John's Anglican Cathedral isn't any ordinary building.

Construction began in 1812 when the first cornerstone was laid. The Church has since served the Anglican congregation in Belize for over 200 years and is also the only church outside of Europe that has hosted the crowning of Kings!

From The Heart of Belize - Swing Bridge

The Swing Bridge is a unique wonder in all of the world! It is the oldest Swing Bridge in Central America and the ONLY remaining manually swung bridge in the entire world!

The bridge was constructed in England and delivered to Belize by the Jefferson Construction Company. After the bridge was installed, vehicular and pedestrian traffic would come to a standstill in downtown Belize City EVERY day, once in the morning and again in the evening, to allow boats to pass.

BLOG POST:

After such a long first day, and a stressful first day, we decided to take a few days in Belize, and relax in San Ignacio. After all, we have been working, and preparing for this trip, which is a vacation after all, so might as well take advantage of it. San Ignacio Belize, is a very small town in a valley, sitting on a river, split between another town of Santa Elena. Arriving in the dark, seemed like not that much but as the sun rose and we took a stroll around San Ignacio, had a coffee, relaxed, we started to like the relaxed reggae vibe pretty consistent to most of Belize.

Video Leaving Playa del Carmen:

Steve had some loose ends still going on in Playa del Carmen, which he has been trying to sort out from in Belize, but its looking like things might be taking a turn. Check out the BLOG POST LINK above to read more about that.

I take Winston for a stroll along the river walk, and try to avoid the rain on the outskirts of San Ignacio, Belize.
