Samoa Off The Beaten Track

Born and raised in New Zealand, Tuki Laumea has spent a lot of time in the motherland over the years but this trip he decided to try things he'd never done before.

He goes rugged, he goes intrepid and shows you a side of Samoa maybe you've never seen before .... Samoa off the beaten track!

Maybe it'll inspire other NZ born Samoans to do the same next time they're home and gives more options of what to see and do in beautiful Samoa to non-Samoan travellers.

Talofa Samoa - The Heart Of Polynesia

Talofa lava and welcome to Samoa, the treasured islands of the South Pacific.

Samoa is considered the heart of Polynesia. It has a 3000 year-old way of life called Fa'a Samoa that underpins a memorable visitor experience.

Samoa is a postcard of natural beauty consisting of ten islands, each offering very distinct and different environments to explore. Blessed with stunning land and seascapes, and friendly people who are proud of their country, there are many versions of paradise to discover. Drive around around in a day, or take a leisurely trip over a few days, or even tour by cycle over a week, or just base yourself at a resort and relax.

From the rainforest covered rugged volcanic mountain peaks of Savai'i, to the vast valleys leading down to Upolu's coastline ringed with a necklace of white sandy beaches.

Samoa Adventure Travel

Behind the sparkling waters and white sand of sun-soaked tropical beaches, there is no shortage of adventure if you are looking to pick up the pace and immerse yourself in nature at its finest. Hop on a mountain or electric bike to savour the sights at a slower pace - join a tour group on Upolu or Savai’i, or hire your own set of wheels. Strap on the hiking shoes to fully experience the cool wonders of the rugged rainforest interior, with waterfalls, rivers, caves and blowholes among the attractions for those stepping off the beaten track.

Guided hikes are the recommended option for longer walks such as the challenging (two to three days) climb of Samoa’s highest peak, Mt Silisili (1850m). Shorter, more relaxed strolls include the popular Mt Vaea trail outside of Apia, incorporating Robert Louis Stevenson's tomb and sensational views back over the capital. In western Savai’i, hit a natural high on the Falealupo Canopy Walk, towering above the rainforest. For a unique glimpse of dramatic history, explore the lava fields of Saleaula on Savai’i, left after the eruption of Mt Matavanu early in the 20th century which buried five villages. Marvel at the half-buried church, lava patterns and imprints still clearly visible.

There are plenty of ways to cool off too – or to simply dive into pure relaxation. On Upolu, there are plenty of falls and swimming options away from the bustling capital including Togitogiga, with its multiple pools, on the south coast; Papapapaitai Falls on the cross island road; and the refreshing swimming holes and cascading falls at Falefa, Sauniatu and Fuipisia on the east coast road. When conditions allow, naturally formed rock slides thrill all ages at Papase’ea, with toilets and change rooms available.

On less populated Savai’i, plunge into Afu Aau (Olemoe) waterfalls in the southeast and marvel at the spectacular Mu Pagoa falls, plummeting straight into the ocean below. The blowholes at Alofaaga are yet another must-see on Samoa’s larger island, with water surging 30m into the air – and locals throwing coconuts into the blowholes for an extra sideshow.
