In this video I visit Salvador da Bahia, in the North East region of Brazil. Salvador is a fascinating city along the coast, the dark history of the slave trade in Salvador Bahia has given rise to a unique Afro-Brazilian culture which can be seen in the Bahian cuisine, music, religion and style. I was lucky to be in Salvador for carnival season and witness the parades in the old centre Pelourinho, sample the delicious Afro-Brazilian gastronomy like the famous moqueca fish stew and street food favourite acarajé, explore the tropical beaches and visit a local market which is crazy! This part of Brazil often gets overlooked in favour of typical tourist cities like Rio de Janeiro, but it's got so much history, the friendliest locals and a really strong Afro-Brazilian culture which makes it a great city to visit!

Salvador Bahia Brazil 4K Walking Tour
Salvador is recognized throughout the country and internationally for its cuisine, music and architecture. The African influence in many cultural aspects of the city makes it a center of Afro-Brazilian culture. As the first capital of Colonial Brazil, the city is one of the oldest in the Americas and one of the first planned cities in the world, having been established during the Renaissance period. Its foundation in 1549 by Tomé de Sousa took place on account of the implementation of the General Government of Brazil by the Portuguese Empire.
There are many interesting places to go in Salvador and in this video we show some of the best ones.

SALVADOR, BAHIA - Before ever going to Brazil, Salvador was one of the top cities I wanted to visit - and finally this is the time. In this all out ultimate street food tour of Salvador we’ll focus especially on Afro-Brazilian food and culture, the heart of Salvador, Bahia. The people were amazing, the food was delicious. #Salvador #BrazilianFood #Acarajé #streetfood
Sao Joaquim Market - To begin this street food tour we started in the morning at Sao Joaquim Market, one of the main fruits and vegetables market, with restaurant and food as well. One thing you’ll see all over the market, different from other parts of Brazil is dendê oil, the orange palm oil originally from West Africa.
Recanto Da Lucia - At the market we ate breakfast at Recanto Da Lucia, a small local Brazilian food stall serving amazing dishes like feijoada and pirão. Total price - 80 BRL ($20.61)
Dona Susana - Next up on this Afro-Brazilian food tour of Salvador, we drover to Dona Susana, a restaurant under the highway, with a million dollar view. The main dish to eat in Bahia is Moqueca Bahiana, a stew of fish or seafood in palm oil and coconut milk. Her’s was outstanding as was the ensopado de camarão and her version of pirão. One of the most stunning locations so far in Brazil. Total price - 87 BRL ($22.41)
Pelourinho - This is the center of the historic city of Salvador, with a distinct Portuguese style and influence. If you look around, you might think you’re in Portugal.
Capoeira - Pelourinho is a center of art and culture and I had a chance to learn about Capoeira, an Afro-Brazilian martial art, but a dance at the same time. It’s amazing to watch and they even volunteered me to stand as they came dangerously close to kicking me!
Elevador Lacerda - In Pelourinho you’ll also find the Elevador Lacerda, which takes you from lover Salvador to the upper part of Salvador.
Price - .15 BRL ($0.03) per person
Mercado Modelo - One of the main central old city markets in Salvador, Bahia is Mercado Modelo, and while most of the market is pretty touristy, Jacibar on the outside serves up delicious local dishes. We ordered Xinxin de Galinha, Bobó de camarão, and Caruru. It was an incredible meal. Total price - 180 BRL ($46.37)
Tambores e Cores - Samba beats represent Salvador, Bahia, and the thundering drums are a must see when you’re in Bahia, Brazil.
Boteco Di Janela - In the evening we went to Boteco Di Janela, a bar and restaurant, friendly owners, and delicious seafood. We ate sarapatel - a blood stew, and sururu - small local mussels.
Acarajé da Ivone - If there’s one Brazilian street food snack you have to eat in Salvadar, it’s Acarajé, a life-changing bun of blackeyed peas deep fried in palm oil and stuffed with vatapa, caruru, shrimp, and salad. It’s is unbelievable and the owners at Acarajé da Ivone were equally as friendly and hospitable. I also had an Abara, the same thing except the black eyed pea fritter is steamed instead of fried. Price - 8 BRL ($2.06) per
Salvador, Bahia, in Brazil, exceeded my expectations - the food and people were outstanding and made it a city and destination I will never forget. What a stunning combination of natural beauty, food, and hospitality.

We started our trip in São Paulo before heading down to Iguazu Falls and the Paraguay city of Ciudad Del Este. From there, we flew up to the original capital Salvador da Bahia and spent a few days on the local island Ilha Itaparica. We then finished the trip with a week in the fascinating world-famous city of Rio de Janeiro. All in all, our three weeks in Brazil were a blast and we can't wait to return!

Born in Carmo RJ, she is a tourism specialist with 16 years of experience in the trade, has worked at travel operators, exchange agencies, event production, education. In 2015 she took a 3-month sabbatical trip to Europe, reflected on the exclusion of black people from the tourist experience and how African culture is not seen as attractive for tourism development. Upon returning to Brazil, she created an Instagram page blacktravelers and begins to promote Afro-Brazilian culture to foreigners, in 2019 she went to Africa for the first time and after an insight created the second agency destinoafro, a Brazilian travel group for Africa and the Diasporas. She lived for a year and a half as a nomad, with just one suitcase she passed through several cities in Brazil, landing in Salvador, where in 2022 she united the two brands into one: afrotrip is born! A creative agency that focuses the client on their travel and leisure experiences.

Die erste Hauptstadt von Brasilien - Salvador oder auch Salvador da Bahia genannt, stand auf unserer Liste in Brasilien. Leider war es aufgrund der aktuellen Situation nicht möglich diese wunderbare Stadt an der Allerheiligenbucht ausgiebig zu besuchen, da alles großteils geschlossen war.
Dennoch hatte Thais und ich die Möglichkeit einen Touristenführer zu engagieren und Sergio war so nett und hat uns ein Teil der Sehenswürdigkeiten Salvador gezeigt. Bist du bereit und kannst es kaum erwarten diese Partnerstadt von Lissabon zu entdecken? Du wirst unsere Unterkunft sehen, Praia da Barra und den Leuchtturm, sowie die Kirche von Bonfim, Pelourinho, die Kirche und das Kloster von São Francisco mit 400 Kilo Gold versehen und vieles mehr! Bin mir sicher sagen zu können, dass der Staat Bahia traumhaft ist.
