SAILING off DESPITE ANXIETY: Woman sailing SOLO from Colombia to Ecuador - UNTIE THE LINES IV #38

It's been a while since I sailed a multiple day passage all by myself...so my belly is a little upside down with my usual pre-departure anxiety nausea. But it's time to untie the lines and to sail down 500nm to Ecuador.

The passage will be a bit of a challenge due to the strong currents and partially light and turning winds...Both conditions in which it is good to have a working autopilot. Too bad if that precious tool stops working about half way through the trip...

Ahoy and Enjoy,
Nike & Karl

Caribbean Dream: Swimming with Turtles in crystal clear water - UNTIE THE LINES IV #68

Back in warmer latitudes, back in the Caribbean Sea! Not quite back on Karl, yet...he is still waiting patiently in Ecuador for my return.

Michael, the owner of SV Marlin, has asked me to work as a co-skipper for two weeks for a charter sail from Curacao to Los Roques and back. Since this 60 foot performance yacht is quite the beauty and because I had never been to that region, I spontaneously said “yes” and here I am, back in the Caribbean!

GROUNDED SAILBOAT: How I beached my sailboat on purpose - UNTIE THE LINES IV #51

Upsi, my sailboat is sitting aground on a sandbank in a river. But no worries, I did this on purpose...to clean my hull. My sailboat has one speciality: TWIN KEELS. This enables me to dryfall with my boat in tidal water bodies to inspect my hull, to clean it and to do some repairs without having to spend a lot of money for a haul out.

Once Karl's butt was nice and clean again, Maria and I took off on a coastal sail some 20nm down south to Jaramijo. On the way there, we traweld for micro plastic and found 13 plastic items, 8 of them being micro plastic, during a trawl of half an hour.

We wanted to see how much trash we would find if we trawled on the beach in a straight line for the same amount of time. We only picked up what was in the reach of our arms and collected 248 items in half an hour.

If you would like to help us fight plastic pollution, here are five easy way to reduce single use plastic in your daily life:

1. bring your own reusable shopping bags
2. use a reusable water bottle
3. say no to plastic straws
4. carry a reusable coffee mug
5. use reusable containers to store / transport food

Thank you for being IN MOCEAN for clean oceans.

Fresh Breeze Of Diesel And Mountain Air - UNTIE THE LINES IV #21

Finally I fix that damn diesel tank that has been bothering me since...four month, I think?! So far it looks like he splash zone is holding up, so at least that means that some of the holes are fixed for now ????????????.

Apart from that, I felt that it was time to get away from the boat a bit, so I went on a little hike with my awesome friends. What a treat!

Thank you to everybody who has supported the creation of these video and has shared this journey with my sailboat Karl with me so far. It would not have been the same without you.

This episode was filmed in 10 / 2020.

Welcome to Untie The Lines! my name is Nike, I bought an aluminum 37 foot sailboat in Panama in 2013 that I named KARL. I spent a good year refitting it, mostly by myself and with the help of awesome friends, and then (mostly) solo sailed my sailboat around the western Caribbean.

In 2016, I crossed the Panama Canal, had a major engine break down, a near sinking experience and a serious foot injury which got me stuck along the Pacific coast of Central and South America.

In this Episode, Paul, Luca and I go on a Little dinghi excursion to a beautiful small island close to our anchorage Espiritu Santo (Panama). We snorkel but unfortunately we find find nothing to eat underwater.

Back on board, I tackle a boat repair project, building a new hatch cover for my aft cabin. Since it’s rainy season, I have to take a bottle break from my outside project and decide to build a cute woven shelf basket from recycled ocean plastic. Check out @inmoceanorg or for more about our recycling ocean trash project.

Enjoy and Ahoy,
Nike & Karl

This won`t stop me. I am back to boat life!

Some of you might remember that I had a kite surfing accident in Los Roques (Venezuela) that resulted in a heavily fractured calcaneus bone (heel bone). Since then, nearly a year has gone by and this update video will take you on a fast forward journey from September 2019 to March 2020. I did not film during this time but I hope you still enjoy the update that I put together from some pictures that I took.

Enjoy & Ahoy,

It’s only a short 13nm long day sail, but it feels good to shake out the canvas again. Also, the scenery is just amazingly beautiful! But see for yourself.

We collect a bunch of mangoes and My friend Paul shows you how he processes and ferments these yummy fruit into some delicious mango wine. Especially during lock down and prohibition here in Panama, this is a nifty little thing to know.

But that’s not all: at the end of the episode, there is a little feature about Paul and his sailboat Hierbabuena, so make sure you stay tuned until the very end.

Sailing to Alaska! The underwaterworld is totally mesmerizing

After motoring most of the way up north along the coast of the picturesque British Columbia, we set all canvas to sail across the border to Alaska!

We are greeted with a bunch of thick fog and a mesmerizing underwater world that is taking up all my attention.

Alaska has always been a place I wanted to travel to and I am thrilled to set foot on this magical stretch of land, even if it is just for a short while. A big big thank you to Captain John for bringing me here!

Kite Surfing Venezuela. The perfect breeze and crystal clear water! - Untie The Lines IV #71

Los Aves Sotavento is the western island group of the Los Aves Archipelago north off the Venezuelan mainland. The water is crystal clear and there is usually a stiff breeze of 20 to 25 knots which makes it a great kite surf spot.

The boys and Manu kited forth and back like crazy and Micha finally talked me into trying out some kite surfing after my first initial days of refusal due to being scared of possible injuries...

After our stop in Los Aves, we lift up anchor and sail upwind to The islands of Los Roques where we need to clear into Venezuela.

On we go! From Isla Seca, Karl and I take a little cruise up Santa Lucia for a quiet non-rolly sleep. From there, we move further along the coast to Morro Negrito, which is a great surf spot that can only be reached by boat.

Time for a couple of days of surf and rolling around in this swelly bay.

Being Nanny For Manny - UNTIE THE LINES IV #46

Karl needs a new autopilot, so I decided to fly up to California to pick up my new pelagic autopilot in person because it was about the same price as shipping it and most likely easier than dealing with customs.

During my stay, I stayed with my friend Manny because he needed a nanny for his kids. On his days off, we went exploring the beautiful state California a bit. Some great fun in the snow!

We are doing a little geographical jump in Untie The Lines today, travelling from Ecuador up to the North West of the USA. John and his wife Shelley have invited me to come and crew for them, sailing their boat Persistence up to Ketchikan with John where Shelley would join us for the way back down. Since I have always wanted to travel that region by sailboat, I accepted the offer and jumped ship for a couple of weeks.

John had told me to leave my work clothes at home, stating that there won't be any problems along the way. Luckily, I did not listen and did bring my dirty work clothes since we had a little engine issue already on day one of our trip.

Come on board and join us for the trip north :).

Thank you to everybody who has supported the creation of these video and has shared this journey with my sailboat Karl with me so far. It would not have been the same without you.

In 2016, I crossed the Panama Canal, had a major engine break down, a near sinking experience and a serious foot injury which got me stuck along the Pacific coast of Central and South America.

In this Episode, I swap my old AGM batteries for some new to me AGM batteries that I bought from a fellow cruiser. Also, I go through an extensive troubleshoot of the electric motor or my Lofrans Tigres Horizontal Windlass only to find out that it was a lose wire that caused all the trouble.

Here is a list of the things that I trouble shoot on my electric motor for my Lofrans Tigres Windlass:
- check carbon brushes
- clean carbon brushes
- clean magnets
- clean commutator
- check commutator for shorts or broken wires
- clean armature stack
- check armature teeth for no continuity to commutator

Hopefully this will help you in case you ever have to check the electric motor of your windlass (or any other electric motor, since it is basically always a similar set up)

Enjoy and Ahoy,
Nike & Karl
