Kennedy Island and the story of PT109:

Kennedy was a lieutenant during WWII and captain of the PT109, boat that was wrecked during a japanese attack. Kennedy and his crew swam to Plum Pudding Island, which will later be renamed Kennedy island. Because they had no food or water, they decided to swim South to Olasana Island, and later Kennedy went to Naru Island to find help.

Crossing from Australia to Louisiades and Solomon islands [part 1]

It's finally time for us to sail across the coral sea and the solomon sea. It's our first passage, so quite scary, but we feel prepared... Or do we? With strong winds and waves up to 6m on a beam reach, not sure that anyone can claimed to be prepared!

Add to that seasickness and all the issues that we didn't plan for, and you end up with something very scary. You just go across the barrier reef and suddenly think, how about we stay there instead? Beautiful water, lots of fish, sun, etc. Do we really need more? Do we really need to go crazy and cross an ocean?

Find out what happened, and if we ever made it across!

Crossing from Australia to Louisiades and Solomon islands [part 2] - tips for seasickness

With part 1 completed, we are getting ready to leave the Louisiades to go across to the Solomon Islands. In theory, should be a quick and easy sail: it's only a couple of days away, the weather predictions are pretty good for us...

But wait? Did you really think it would be this easy??? First of all, we are sailing without the headsail, so let's forget about 'couple of days'. Secondly, did you know that the Solomon sea is prone to squalls? So yeah weather predictions sounds great, but these bad boys can't be predicted so... We are in for the scare of our lives!!!!

Want to find out more? Want some tips and tricks on how to handle sea sickness? This is for YOU!

Boat repairs, repairs and more repairs - the nightmare of breakdowns in a remote country!

We are still in the Solomon islands, what a PARADISE country! But do you know what you don't find in paradise? Repairs shops... And we would have needed quite a few! Between the sail furling system, the engine and even the tiller after hitting the reef, it was a lot to handle when you have no one to help!

Luckily, Solomon people are always so nice and they'll do their best to try and help. So yes, no matter how much they are willing, sometimes we need more than they can offer, but the boat is still afloat (most of the time) so the rest doesn't matter as much!

If you want to know more about the diagnosis of an overheating Yamaha 9.9 engine, about what to do when you hit the reef and damage the tiller, about where to seek for help in the Solomon islands (hint: Liapari), and a lot more, this video is for you!

Checking in and out of countries is always a challenge even when you are in a big city. It's even harder when you are in a rural village. Once checked it we help the local community college with their piggery project and then set of to start exploring these amazing islands.

Solomons sail to Australia - Whitsundays- Keppels - Marlin

We got a weather window to sail back to Oz so we sailed to Noro, got supplies at the fresh food market and set sail south west to Townsville, the first 2 days were extremely rough and then it settled into a great sail. We then sailed down the Australian coast via the Whitsundays, the Keppels and then into the Sunshine Coast.

War Canoe and Head Hunting, Solomon Islands / ソロモン諸島 戦闘カヌーとヘッドハンティング

#canoe #SolomonIslands #PacificIslands #カヌー #丸木舟 #ソロモン諸島
War canoe paddling and performance of battle at the 11th Festival of Pacific Arts held in the Solomon Islands in 2012. Traditional war canoes called Tomoko gathered from New Georgia Island, Solomon Islands, to the capital Honiara. Tomoko was used for head hunting and slave capture until the early 20th century. Today, the demonstration of paddling Tomoko, catching a treasure necklace and head hunting is a tourism resource.

Lake Malawi, Jerusalem, And Blue Water Sailing To Vanuatu. The Three Trips That Shaped My Life

Hello Travellers, I’m Jo Frances Penn and this is episode 1 of my new Books and Travel Podcast (audio-only). Inspiration for the curious around unusual and fascinating places as well as the deeper aspects of travel.

As I begin this journey of sharing my travels, I wanted to start with three trips that have shaped my life. They may not be the highlights of my travels over the years, but they changed my view of the world. My life would have looked a whole lot different without them. Join me in Malawi, Jerusalem, and the waters of the South Pacific.

(1) “Shall we get a new kitchen or go back to Malawi for Christmas?” (1986)
(2) Jerusalem, Israel (1991)
(3) Blue water sailing on the tall ship, Soren Larsen, from Fiji to Vanuatu (1999)

Sailing The Dream | #032 | A 5 minute job is a days work

You know what they say about boat works, there’s no such thing as a five-minute job.
Here at The Dream a 5-minute job easily becomes a full day of work and always results in new tasks added to the future projects list.
And even when we think it was as simple as tightening or loosening a nut things can become interesting and we need to pull out the strange tool sets!
