Saying goodbye to the BVI

It was our last day sailing through the British Virgin Islands in our charter Lagoon 42 sailing catamaran. We left Norman Island and sailed for Tortola to Nanny Cay to return the yacht to the charter base. Before leaving the boat we gave you a full tour of the boat. Then we said goodbye to our creww and Flotilla.

BVI Catamaran Charter Sail

Sailing on a Catamaran through the British Virgin Islands

The Caribbean’s British Virgin Islands have a variety of charter sailing companies, including; The Moorings, Dream Yacht Charter, Sunsail, Horizon Yacht Charters, Conch Charters, BVI Yacht Charters, CYOA, and many others. We, however, used our timeshare and booked with Tradewinds Luxury Vacations through our RCI affiliate. It was amazing!

We literally sail to all the main islands in the BVI’s (except Anegada – look for our other video on that island) and snorkel and scuba dive some of the best wrecks in the BVI’s.

Arrival Day
We check-in at Nanny Cay Marina and after meeting our Captain AJ and First Mate Roxy and the other guests (Mike, Kathy, Tony, Marlene, Jason, Patricia, and Gregory) we set sail to magical Dead Man’s Bay off Peter Island where the first delicious dinner and cocktails were served on board.

Cruising Day 1
After a scrumptious breakfast, we go snorkeling and then set sail for Cooper Island. After a delicious lunch, we cruise around to Manchioneel Bay, where we snorkel, kayak or spend some time ashore, on one of the BVIs most beautiful beaches.

After lunch, we head over and take a short trip by dinghy to The Baths - the most renowned, natural feature in the BVIs. The Baths are a collection of giant boulders that form spectacular pools and grottos. The huge boulders and rocks form a maze that leads to Devil's Bay Beach.

We then sail to Long Bay for dinner and more drinks.

Cruising Day 2
The next morning I snorkel, while others scuba dive the Kodiak Queen wreck. We sail south of Mosquito Island to another Dead Man’s Bay for snorkeling, then off to the famous Michael Bean’s Happy Arrr! in Leverick Bay. We party all night and laugh until it hurts.

Cruising Day 3
We sail to Eustacia Island and after lunch we have a leisurely, downwind sail to Marina Cay, with its brightly colored villas and tropical flowers, it is, undoubtedly, the most spectacular cay in this region. We snorkel on Diamond Reef and then enjoy an evening dinner and stroll around Scrub Island.

Cruising Day 4
Before breakfast, we set sail for the island of Jost Van Dyke and the picturesque Diamond Cay. We relax a little at the Soggy Dollar and then I almost get killed by a falling tree at Foxy’s Taboo, then we sail to Norman Island where I night snorkel with Jason.

Cruising Day 5
Before sunrise, we hike to the top of Norman Island. After lunch, onboard just a stone's throw from Norman Island, and beside Pelican Island, is a wonderful place named The Indians. We all snorkel here in one of the BVIs most popular spots. Then we motor sail over to “The Caves” and snorkel there for a while. Little Harbor off of Peter Island is where we anchor for the evening.

Cruising Day 6
Lots of snorkeling here the next day, seeing lots of turtles, squid, rays, and pufferfish. We also explore the “Amway House” that was decimated during a hurricane. After lunch, we set sail for the home base in Tortola - just in time for more powerful sundowners! We go ashore to a nearby restaurant, for our last dinner on this trip, where we dance through stilt-walkers legs and take pictures of Mike’s famous, Dollar Rings!

Departure Day
One last tasty breakfast on board, and then we gather our belongings, as well as our wonderful memories of a week in the beautiful British Virgin Islands.

Sailing the BVI

In January 2020, Diana and I chartered a 48' Moorings bareboat catamaran, and along with dear friends Julia, Kirk, Gail and Phil, we sailed the beautiful turquoise waters of the BVI (British Virgin Islands) for a week.

We had an amazing adventure, visiting seven islands including Anegada and famous Norman Treasure Island. Here is a small sample of our wonderful week where we met and lived (10 years for Bob and 1 year for Diana).

After a chance encounter, we are invited to do some racing at St. Thomas Yacht Club (STYC). We hang out with our new friends there and tour the yacht club. It has some excellent sailing heritage, including producing many Americas Cup Sailors and Match Race champions. We have even raced against a few in the past.

After some fun, it was time to get back to boat work. We had a watermaker to rebuild. We fixed it up and even created a DIY how-to video in our tech talks section. We also check out the island of St. John (STJ) and do some snorkeling and freediving with turtles.

Then, it is on to BVI. We are sailing through paradise in bliss, but starting to become aware of the changes on the horizon.

About Us:

So who are we?

We aren't Vendee Globe Race or Volvo Ocean Race sailors, although sometimes Curtis wishes he was one. We don't have a fancy catamaran, but we do have a pretty and fast monohull sailboat.

We are not Sailing La Vagabonde, Expedition Evans, Sailing Doodles, Sailing Uma, Project Atticus, MJ Sailing, Gone With the Wynns, or SV Delos.

We are Kate and Curtis, a YouTube sailing couple and travel vloggers, with our sailing rescue dog Roxy, aboard SV Sweet Ruca, a J-Boats J/46 monohull. Cruising catamarans like the Fountaine Pajot's, Leopards, and Lagoons can't keep up, but we still like them ;-) We even wanted one before we found out how much fun performance monohull sailing and cruising is!

We used to be sailboat racers on the great lakes (we still are...kind of). We bought a sailboat, re-fit it, with a goal to sail around the world, doublehanded, via the capes (Cape Horn and the Cape of Good Hope). Some say this is the wrong way or the hard way. To us, the challenge is part of the journey.

We will see if this will happen or not, as the new normal has put quite a damper on our travels. For now, we are holed up in the Windward Islands of the Caribbean making videos and scuba diving.

We hope you enjoy our videos and vlogs and join us on our journey via our YouTube Channel.

'Till Next Time :-)

BVI Sailing - Cooper Island, Saba Rock, Marina Cay, Jost Van Dyke, Norman Island

It was time to finally put our ASA 101, 103, & 104 certifications from the previous summer up to the test. We flew into St. Thomas Airport in the US Virgin Islands, cleared customs, then took a ferry to Tortola in the British Virgin Islands. We rented a 39 foot sailboat from Wickhams Cay 2 on Tortola and set sail the following morning. Our sail plan was as follows:

Day 1: Tortola to Cooper Island
Day 2: Cooper Island to Saba Rock
Day 3: Saba Rock to Marina Cay
Day 4: Marina Cay to Jost Van Dyke
Day 5: Jost Van Dyke, relax and scuba dive
Day 6: Jost Van Dyke to Norman Island
Day 7: Norman Island to Wickhams Cay II, Tortola

This was our final vacation, as we would be heading back to New York City to prepare to resign from our jobs, sell all of our stuff, and begin our journey of traveling the world for a year.
