A Dream of Solo Sailing to Hawaii in a Small Boat Lost after self-steering failure

Episode # 196 : A Change of Course

Hello Friends,

Here is the story of my ill fated attempt at solo sailing our 30ft sailboat Triteia to the Hawaiian Islands.

We had pushed hard to finally live land life behind and were 2 months behind our planned departure date due to parts shortages and unexpected complications with getting our new mast installed. Our original cruising plans were for James to sail solo to Hawaii then continue on to Alaska where Camille and Mister Steady would come on board. All of the delays and the advancing summer season gave us a very tight time window on making this dream come true. This resulted in not enough time to throughly sea trail the windvane....

After days of beating into 20-30 knot winds, my self steering Windvane began to work its self loose from the boat. The threads in the housing of the windvane itself failed which presented the possibility of losing the vane into the sea or WORSE possibly damage the transom of the boat due to the massive loads placed on this gear at sea. Impossible to fix underway I made the hard call and came about and abandoned my attempt for Hawaii.

Could I have lashed the windvane and continued on? Possibly yes but my concern was once I made it to Hawaii would I get stuck in Hawaii if the vane was not able to be repaired? I also had to consider there is no quick exit from Hawaii. It is 3 weeks or a month sail from Hawaii to anywhere on the West Coast of the North America.

I had not 1 but 2 electronic Tiller Pilots as a back up and for coastal cruising in light winds but these units are, strangely enough, Not waterproof and tend to burn out very easily. So I wasn't without redundancies but anyone who goes ocean sailing knows that a windvane is the most critical gear on the boat especially so for a solo sailor.

So as with all things sailing, one must be flexible and willing to change course when necessary.

I had an amazing opportunity to hop on a Lagoon 450F and take a nonstop 4 day sailing trip down from Beaufort North Carolina to Fort Pierce Florida via Atlantic Ocean. It was an amazing trip with conditions not so favorable to start but then ended up being a very enjoyable rest of the trip.

Ep 122 Why a Bluewater Boat? Big Weather St Thomas to Bermuda

The difference between a dedicated bluewater boat and lightweight charter type boat becomes clear (again) as we leave St Thomas for Bermuda. Although the whole passage wasn’t like this (but could have been), leaving under 35-40 knot winds and huge swells once again reinforced the decision to buy an oceangoing hull that was designed for this sort of abuse.

From the planning side, insurance wanted us out of their Tropical Storm (Hurricane) Zone between June 1st and November 15th, so our choices were to go south to Grenada or north to somewhere above Cape Hatteras. We eventually decided on Annapolis, Maryland, well up the Chesapeake Bay. But first we’d have to sail 950 nautical miles to Bermuda, and this is what we’ll see here. It’s a major offshore passage.

But we do pay the price for our adventurous departure, and that comes when the wind finally dies a day and a half from Bermuda. We knew this was coming, as we’d been forced to choose the “least worst” departure date. The Azores High had been elongated for the previous month, extending all the way to the US coastline north of the Bahamas, and we were hoping against hope that it might move north along with us, but such hopes were dashed as we approached the island. Eventually we fell back on the iron genny to get us through the final glassy miles of the central Atlantic, finally arriving in St George’s after 6 days on the water. Such is life in the cruising world.

35 HOURS AT SEA ON A 28ft SAILBOAT | Sailing 200 MILES The Solent to Falmouth | Ep11

WE HAVE A COOKBOOK! - grab it on Kindle here. Please let us know if there's any issues in purchasing :) Thanks all x

UK SITE-

WORLDWIDE- Our longest sail yet, 35 hours, 180 nautical miles - from Gosport to Falmouth on our 28ft boat! Being still inexperienced sailors, this was quite an ambitious challenge for us. We had only ever sailed in the Solent, and decided rather than doing what everyone suggested and break up the journey into smaller stints- we would do it all in a couple of days! This gave us some valuable sailing experience, all in preparation for our Bay of Biscay crossing in the very near future (between 4 and 6 days at sea) and we saw our first DOLPHINS.

A huge thank you to Alex for the surprise drone footage!
