Sailing The Bahamas | Sailing Florence – Ep.157

Running aground is a constant risk when Sailing in the Bahamas, but navigating over the shallow sandbanks with turquoise waters for miles around makes it worth while. In the rarely visited outer islands we find stunning deserted beaches all to ourselves before we visit Deans blue hole, the second deepest blue hole in the world.

Before heading out of the hurricane zone, we stop in St. Croix for some epic diving with our friends on SV Too Short. We rent a jeep to do a little land lubbing and check out the Annaly Bay Tide Pools and Point Udall. By sea, we explore the Cane Bay Wall, the Wrecks of Butler Bay and the Frederiksted Pier. We experience our first night dive complete with eels and OCTOPUS! Despite all the fun we were having, we took time out to replace our solar panels before heading to our next stop, Grenada!

Sailing Bahamas to Jamaica - Hallberg Rassy 54 Cloudy Bay - Feb'20. Season20 Episode13

On passage from Bahamas to Jamaica, flying the Parasailor and passing the notorious windward passage at the eastern end of Cuba.

After several days in George Town, Bahamas, we found a narrow weather wind to start our 700nm passage to the Cayman Islands, via the Windward Passage to the east of Cuba. A northerly cold front was approaching which would stop the easterly trade winds and give us a solid following wind to go south. The first short leg, heading NE to round the tip of Long Island, was very tranquil. A good time to remind ourselves how to fly the Parasailor spinnaker.
As we entered the Atlantic and turned SE down the eastern side of Long Island, the wind increased and we sailed into the first night at sea, reaching the southern end of Long island by midnight. Next morning, we again had the Parasailor up, this time in a 15kt wind on a magical 2-sail broad reach. But late afternoon, the dark clouds representing the cold front approached us fast from behind. We dropped the spinnaker just in time for the first of several 25-30kts squalls which powered us to the Windward Passage by midnight.
Once in the lee of Cuba, we gybed and headed along the south coast in gradually reducing winds. By the following midday we were motor-sailing in very hot and airless conditions, when we made a sudden decision to divert 80nm south, to Jamaica, with the plan to cruise its north coast prior to continuing to Cayman. The subsequent direction change allowed us to sail again and we had another thrilling ride to the Jamaican lee shore, arriving rather dramatically into Port Antonio in the early hours of the following day. 21-24 Feb 2020

Through the Reefs in the Bahamas

Explore shallow reef-strewn waters of the Bahamas. We run up on the beach in the far-out Bahamian Islands.

Travelling the Far-Out Islands of the Bahamas there are often no other boats around for days. This trip was in the late spring, and we visited islands where very few boats travel. Our boat is very shallow with a swinging keel - our draft is just 3 feet with the keel up. Using the Explorer charts for the Bahamas we visited the Crooked and Acklins group, then sailed on to the Exumas.

Check out our boat here...

How to do a Bahamian Mooring

Are you sailing south and wonder how to do a Bahamian Mooring? The Bahamian moor means setting two anchors off the bow. Its generally used to deal with anchorages in areas with tidal flow such as cuts in the Bahamas. This can be a little daunting for your first time, but we go through it showing all the steps. We anchor our 49 foot sailboat in a cut near Big Major Spot in Exumas Bahamas.

Sailing to an uninhabited island!- Wreck Cove [ Ep3 - Sailing Nova Scotia ]

Imagine rocking up to a perfect, uninhabited atoll in the middle of the Indian Ocean.....well, this is nothing like that. We nervously hoist the main sail and make our way to wreck cove, where many ships have run aground over the years. It's located on Mcnabs Island about a one hour sail from our mooring.

Boarded at Sea! Are they PIRATES? We sail too close to the coast of Venezuela (EP 12)

On our way from Grenada to Curaçao, we decided it would be a fantastic idea to visit the Venezuelan islands of Los Aves. We were aware of that the country is in a state of economic collapse, leading to increase crime corruption and piracy, opening up a risk for sailors like us.

But surely no pirates would venture as far as these remote, seemingly insignificant islands? As we sailed past, we saw the unmistakable shape of a few small, open boats, and decided we'd better not stop. As the islands faded into the distance, and we felt like we had escaped, some obscure Spanish rang out on the VHF.

We looked behind us to see a small open boat, four men, and the unmistakable silhouette of an AK47.

Sailing Cape Hatteras - Part 1 - Annapolis to Bahamas [Ep. 13]

After a major refit, we set sail on a dark, rainy, and cold evening from Annapolis with the Goal of being in the Bahamas for Thanksgiving. We don't make it in one shot and detour to Cape Fear, North Carolina, before heading out to sea again to rip through the Gulf Stream in 22-35 knots of breeze where Kate fights seasicknesses.

0:00 Annapolis

We start out this youtube sailing video where the last one left off. We left the dock at Bert Jabins in Annapolis, Marlyand in the cold November rain! We had a deadline though, our goal was to be at anchor in the warm, clear blue waters of the Bahamas to celebrate Thanksgiving.

0:31 Chesapeake Bay

The Chesapeake Bay was a mess on the way out. We dodged fishing gear and huge cargo ships and freighters as we motored upwind to make our weather window.

The next morning we were sailing, almost to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, the outlet to the Atlantic Ocean. After months of being coupled up in a boatyard, we have finally headed to sea again. We raised our sails and reached down the coast, headed toward Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.

1:19 Cape Hatteras

Late that leaving, or should we say early the next morning, we rounded Cape Hatteras in the dark. We dealt with the choppy and confused seas driving at weird angles by the relentless current. We made it through, rounding America's Great Cape at roughly 2:00 AM. The next morning, as if to celebrate our achievement, we were greeted by dolphins swimming off of our bow. Our first Bow Dolphins on Sweet Ruca!!!

4:20 Dolphins & Fishing for Mahi Mahi

After we crossed into the Gulf Stream the next morning the conditions subsided. And, at times even went to flat calm. We decided to do some fishing and nailed our first Mahi Mahi. Thankful to the gods of the sea for the fabulous dinner. Fish tacos for days!

7:34 Cape Fear, North Carolina

After our first offshore fishing experience, we saw the weather was shifting. To get ahead of it, and make some time in the calm, we decided to tack back to shore and head to Cape Fear, NC. A wonderful little town on the Intercoastal Waterway. We stayed the night and re-filled with diesel and icecream!

8:33 Gulf Stream in Big Breeze

We headed back out to do battle with the Gulf Stream once more. It was the only thing left between us and warm weather. The problem was, the wind was blowing from the direction we wanted to go. We saw big breeze up to 35 knots and Kate experienced a bout of seasickness as we had spray into the cockpit.

12:21 The Morning After

We made it through, but we weren't to the Bahamas just yet. The trip would continue. We show you what the inside of the boat looks the morning after bashing into big seas offshore. Bluewater sailing at its best. Kate talks about her seasickness and Curtis is having fun discussing autopilot. He is really happy he is finally wearing shorts, a sign we are sailing closer to the Caribbean!

About Us:
So who are we? Well, we aren't Sailing La Vagabonde, Expedition Evans, Sailing Doodles, Sailing Uma, Gone With the Wynns, Tula's Endless Summer, or Sailing Delos. We don't have a fancy catamaran, but we do have a pretty and fast monohull sailboat. Cruising catamarans like the Fountaine Pajot's, Leopards, and Lagoons can't keep up with our quick J-Boats performance cruising sailboat ;)

We are Kate and Curtis, a YouTube sailing couple, with our sailing dog Roxy, aboard SV Sweet Ruca, a J-Boats J/46 monohull. We used to be sailboat racers on the great lakes, and our goal is to cruise around the world via the capes (the wrong way or the hard way). We will see if this will happen or not, as the new normal has put quite a damper on our travels. For now, enjoy our videos and join us on our journey via our YouTube Channel.

'Till Next Time :-)

Crossing The Great Bahama Bank, EXPLORING BERRY ISLANDS on our Sailing Catamaran [Ep.24]

Exploring the Bahamian Islands has begun as we cross the Great Bahama Bank, dodge over a dozen cruise ships and visually navigate the shallow, crystal clear, coral filled waters of this incredibly beautiful country! It’s not all sunset drinks and sandy white beaches and so a little cleaning, polishing and caring for our sweet OliLuki is in order before we set foot on a gorgeous private island covered with coconut filled palm trees and fantastic snorkeling for the boys first time in these waters! Let the fun begin!
