Sailing Deserted Islands - Bahamas

Have you ever wanted to have a tropical island to yourself? We think the Bahamas is one of the few cruising destinations where this is possible! The Plana Cays lie 20 miles from the nearest settlement, and they are uninhabited.
One theory is that this was Columbus' first landfall in the Caribbean. We can't get over the fabulous colour of the water and the miles of white sand beach. There is an off-lying reef so we anchor outside and bring the dinghy in to shore.

Check out our boat here...

All 130 half hour episodes of the Distant Shores TV show are also available on DVD and download at:

This on-going television series following the Shards' global sailing adventures can be viewed on AWE TV in the USA and Caribbean. Watch it on Nautical Channel in Europe, Asia, Africa and many other countries around the world.

Running aground is a constant risk when Sailing in the Bahamas, but navigating over the shallow sandbanks with turquoise waters for miles around makes it worth while. In the rarely visited outer islands we find stunning deserted beaches all to ourselves before we visit Deans blue hole, the second deepest blue hole in the world.

Who are we?

We're Alejo and Andrea, a Colombian / American couple in love with adventuring and exploring the ocean. We previously lived in a converted travel trailer as we explored the best kitesurfing spots of North America, and now we're living in our off-grid sailboat while managing our online business as digital nomads. We're now sailing the Caribbean as we explore the best of this blue planet by kiteboarding, free diving, scuba diving, and fishing. ⛵

Our goal here is to inspire you to chase after your own dreams! We hope to create a community of like-minded, positive individuals who will grow to love and support one another on their own journeys.

Ep. 288 A deserted island in southern Cuba; clearest water and the whitest beach - Caribbean sailing

We hit the jackpot with this place. It's called Cayo Algodon Grande and it's an awesome island. Just watch the episode....words cannot express the colors and clear water of this deserted island. And we have a beach bbq of shrimps and lobster....what a place!

Give it a thumbs up if you liked this episode!

What it’s Like Sailing to a Remote Island Paradise in the Bahamas | Harbors Unknown Ep. 64

This week we’re sailing to a remote uninhabited island paradise in the Bahamas, the Berry Islands. Crystal clear waters and white sand beaches all to ourselves. The waters surrounding these islands are VERY shallow so we’re really trying to arrive before dark. But first we have to stock up on some fresh food because there aren’t any stores where we’re headed. Settle in and see what boat life is like in this part of the beautiful Bahamas.

If you enjoyed this video give it a thumbs up, leave us a comment down below and be sure to subscribe to our channel! It really helps us out.

A huge thank you to our Patrons, we are so grateful for your support! If you’d like real time updates and additional content consider joining the Harbors Unknown community on Patreon.

If you're new here, Harbors Unknown is the story of two dreamers, Kristin and Fabio Potenti, and our French Bulldog dog Yoda. We sold our home at the beginning of the pandemic (May 27th, 2020) and moved aboard our Seawind 1600 catamaran, Wanderlust, in September, 2020. We're sailing her to Harbors Unknown, to explore the world’s vast cultures through food, a common thread amongst people everywhere. Connecting with people and places through the local cuisine, and showing how those dishes can be cooked on a boat with limited space and resources. We're sharing our adventures as a sailing couple living on a boat and how it’s possible to live an alternative lifestyle that provides freedom and fulfillment. We have set off on our voyage sailing around the world, exploring the beautiful waters of South Florida, the Florida Keys, Bahamas, and the US East Coast. 0:00 Intro
0:36 Bahamas Sailing

We raise our anchor at the deserted island in North Eleuthera Bahamas and head west. We sail through the crystal clear but shallow water of the Bahama Banks to Chub Cay, Whale Key, Bimini, and then on to Miami.

3:49 Gulf Stream Crossing

We crossed the gulf stream with a northeast wind, perfect for some downwind spinnaker sailing on the way to Miami and Biscayne Bay. We hit 10.9 knots of boat speed during some great and fun sailing conditions.

7:00 Stiltsville

We entered Biscayne National Park through the Stiltsville Cut. It was pretty cool to sail between the old houses and buildings on stilts, which have been long since abandoned. This is a tricky entrance and we must be careful as we draw over six feet.

7:25 Coconut Grove Sailing Club

We got the last open mooring ball at CGSG, which thankfully was the only one that would fit our 46 foot sailboat. We were very thankful for the clubs hospitality. What an amazing place with excellent staff and friendly members. It helped that they were a racing club and we had visited there before while racing Melges 24's.

7:41 Sail Loft

One of the main reasons for coming to Miami was to get our staysail fixed up. When it was originally re-cut down from a #4 jib in Annapolis the sail loft there made a mistake and made the sail longer than the hoist. So we were able to have the sail re-recut and fixed in under a week. We were super thankful to get this done.

8:39 Melges 20 and Bacardi Winter Series in Miami

It just so happened that the Melges 20 Winter Series and Bacardi Miami Winter Series was going on. Was this planned? Well, it certainly was a good enough reason to sail back to the USA and see all of our racing friends.

On top of that, the race committee boat broke down, so we volunteered to be the RC boat for the day. It was lots of fun, but there were a few close calls. Luckily no boats were harmed in the filming of this video and SV Sweet Ruca came away without a scratch in her Awlgrip!

12:52 Coconut Grove

We ended our time in Miami with a stroll through Coconut Grove. It is a lovely little suburb on the south side. We took advantage of this time to get our last meals out in the USA for what we be a long time. We were also invited to go to the CGSC staff Christmas party, so we celebrated the holiday in style with our new friends before we sail away again to the Bahamas.

About Us:
So who are we? Well, we aren't Sailing La Vagabonde, Expedition Evans, Sailing Doodles, Sailing Uma, Project Atticus, MJ Sailing, Gone With the Wynns, or SV Delos. We aren't Vendee Globe Race sailors, although sometimes Curtis wishes he was one. We don't have a fancy catamaran, but we do have a pretty and fast monohull sailboat. Cruising catamarans like the Fountaine Pajot's, Leopards, and Lagoons can't keep up, but we still like them ;-)

We are Kate and Curtis, a YouTube sailing couple, with our sailing rescue dog Roxy, aboard SV Sweet Ruca, a J-Boats J/46 monohull. We used to be sailboat racers on the great lakes (we still are...kind of), and our goal is to cruise around the world via the capes (the wrong way or the hard way). We will see if this will happen or not, as the new normal has put quite a damper on our travels. For now, we are holed up in the Windward Islands of the Caribbean making videos and scuba diving. We hope you enjoy our videos and join us on our journey via our YouTube Channel.

'Till Next Time :-)

Sailing UNTAMED UNINHABITED Caribbean Islands | BOAB 220

Exploring a rugged uninhabited island is not without risk... like getting caught in weeds and losing your way. Especially when the weeds are thorn bushes armed with daggers. ????????

After licking our wounds, we set sail for the next Caribbean island only to find there's even MORE WATER COMING IN THE BOAT *cue panic.* ????

It's always something, amiright? Hope you like the video, let me know what you think!

Cheers,
Michal
