SAFARI AT KISSAMA NATIONAL PARK - LUANDA

Kissama National Park was formed as a game reserve in 1938.
In January 1957, it was proclaimed a national park by the Portuguese administration.
The Park is located in the northwestern cost of Angola, in southern Africa. It is approximately 72 km from Luanda, the capital of Angola, and it covers an area of approximately 12 000 square km.

The park is bordered on the west by 120 km of the Atlantic Ocean's coast. The Kwanza River forms the northern boundary, while the Longa River constitutes the southern border.
In 2001, the Kissama Foundation, a group of Angolans and South Africans, initiated a project called Operation Noah's Ark, to transport animals, especially elephants, giraffes, zebras, from neighboring countries, Botswana and South Africa.

These animals, who were from overpopulated parks in their home countries, adapted well to the move. Noah's Ark was the largest animal transplant of its kind in history and has given the park momentum to be restored to its natural state.

The park once was home to an abundance of large game animals such as elephants and Giant Sable, but after wide-scale poaching during 25 years of civil war, the animal population was virtually eliminated. Since 2005, the protected area and surroundings is considered a Lion Conservation Unit.

WHAT DOES THE PARK OFFERS?
The Park is mainly comprised of savannah grasslands, dense vegetation, baobabs, meadows and mangrove. The most popular wildlife species found in the park are bushbucks, buffalos, wildebeestes, elephantes, giraffes, ostriches, and zebras.
The wildlife is not as abundant as it is in the neighboring country's national parks.

Kissama National Park Angola safari

November 2015

Kissama National Park is relatively close to Luanda, making it a convenient option for those looking to explore the wilderness without venturing too far from the city. The park can be accessed by car or bus, with several tour operators offering guided tours.

Visitors to the park can expect to see a range of wildlife, including large herds of antelopes, zebras, and other grazing animals. There is also a chance to spot predators such as hyenas and lions, as well as rare and endangered species like the giant sable antelope.

In addition to its wildlife, Kissama National Park is also home to a variety of plant species, including baobab trees, mopane trees, and acacia trees. Visitors can take guided nature walks to learn more about the park's flora and fauna, or take a boat tour along the Kwanza River to see the park from a different perspective.

Overall, Kissama National Park is a great option for those looking for a quick and convenient wildlife adventure near Luanda.

Quiçama, or Kissama, National Park is on the west coast of Angola, in Southern Africa. The park consists of coastal savannah with baobab trees, grasslands and mangroves. North is the Cuanza River. The main base for safaris is Kawa Camp. The main base for safaris is Kawa Camp. This is Angola’s one of the most popular national park which can be accessed very easily. This wildlife reserve also faces the burnt of civil war, but under Operation Noah’s Ark its former glory is slowly being restored. Under this project, several animals like elephants, zebras, ostriches and giraffes were air lifted from South Africa and Botswana and shifted to this park. This replenished this national park’s heritage. The park covers an area of 3,845.57 square miles (9,960sq km). Locally, it is also referred to as parquet Nacional do Quicama or Parque Nacional da Quissama. Because of years of civil war across Angola, most of the national parks have decimated from poaching and hunting. Riverine vegetation is also commonly seen along the main rivers that serve as boundaries to the park. The riverine and floodplain both give way to a variety of vegetation which helps the wildlife survive.
Visiting Kissama National Park is an excellent way to spend a spare day in Luanda. This is due to the inherent and wild beauty of the vistas down to the river, its abundant and enormous Baobab (Imbondeiro) trees, which mix gloriously with the equally prevalent cactus like succulent Euphorbia. It is easy to fit in a Kwanza River (Rio Kwanza) trip the same day. The Kwanza is a spectacular river which gives it's name to the Angolan currency. It flows some 960kms from the centre of Angola into the sea close to the suspension bridge leading into Kissama park (at Barra de Kwanza). It is a haven for birds (and birders!), expect to see Palmnut vultures, Goliath Herons, Fish Eagles, Ospreys, all kinds of Kingfishers and monkeys on a river trip and if you are really lucky a croc or monitor lizard. It is not always easy to see the game in Kissama, but is great fun finding it.

In early 2000's scores of animals were translocated into Kissama from South Africa and Botswana to aid the re-stocking efforts after the dreadful impact the 30 year old war in Angola had on the animal population. It is possible to see up to 60 or more elephant at one time, the original number of just 10 Eland arriving with the reloaction programme has now swollen to over 200 Eland as they enjoy the lush grazing that Kissama offers. Expect also to see Ostrich, Blue Wildebeeste, Zebra, Giraffe, Kudu, Bushbuck, Grey Duiker and Dik Dik.

Warm Wishes

Pediva in Angola

We are an Angolan Tour Operator. We would like to make a presentation of the Southern part of Angola, where is possible to combine two types of Tours, one with The Tribes you can find around Lubango, going to the South of Angola all along the border to Namibia, and one with The Ocean Coast where you can travel between Namibe and Foz de Cunene.

Of course, we can put together tailor-made tours based on these suggestions; we can start or finish in Lubango, or Namibe, or Windhoek in Namibia or from the border with Namibia. We suggest that you consider a minimum of 12 or 15 days to get a good idea of this area.

We also have a long experience in assistance for geological prospecting in all Angola. We can provide you the invitation letter for your Embassy to obtain the tourism visa.

Angola is a friendly and safe country.
Health: yellow fever is requested.
Best season: april - may to october-november
Highlights of Southern Angola

Oasis of Arco :
Discover the beauty and the tranquility of this deep-blue coloured lake, with its amazing rock formations and a wide variety of birds.

Namib Desert :
The oldest desert on earth, from Tombua to Walvis Bay in Namibia, you will discover a unique to the region plant, the Welwitchia Mirabilis, looking like a giant symbol of resistance. You will also admire the spectacular scenery of the dunes, so close to the coast, and that inspire respect.

Beaches :
Relax on white sand beaches, or go fishing or diving and explore the huge diversity of marine life while you catch oysters, clams, mussels and fresh fish directly from the sea for your dinner.

Baia dos Tigres and Foz de Cunene :
The road is very narrow between high dunes and the Ocean, only praticable during the spring tides. You will pass the Isthmus, now the Island of Baia dos Tigres, where whales, dolphins, seals, green turtles, jackals, gemsbok and brown hyenas can be found. You will reach Foz de Cunene for a swim in the fresh and clean waters of the River, and you will enjoy a fine meal at night under the stars.

Iona National Park :
This Park is situated about 200Kms south of the city of Namibe, in the area of Espinheira. You can find there animals like oryx, zébras, ostriches, jackals, springboks, and dik dik. Before the war it was the land of elephants, leopards, lions, and impalas.Maybe in the future they will reintroduce these specimens from neighbouring countries like Namibia, Botswana and South Africa. You will cross a thorny Savannah, dry and sandy riverbeds, and will really be in the Angolan bush, where you will enjoy the vast and yellow plains with its fascinating sunrises and sunsets. Here is the gateway to the Muhimba, Mucawona and Mudhimba tribes.

Pediva hot Springs :
Another oasis in the desert, a nice place for camping near the hot springs and the fresh water of the Curoca river. You will find the remains of an old German elephant hunter's lodge at the top of the hill.

Tchitundo-Hulo :
A nice walk to discover the prehistoric rock paintings on the top of the hill or inside the rocks. It becomes more and more difficult to find them because the big difference between night and day temperatures destroys the surface of the rocks. Some circles could be the representation of the sun, the moon; some figures could be men, giraffes, antelopes, birds, fish or wild animals. This site could be dated at 2600 years old, but other sites could be around 20 000 years old.
In this area the Mucuval tribe can be found.

The Plateau and Province of Huila :
We reach the fertile Central Plateau around Lubango town, by a very nice and spectacular road The Serra da Leba Pass. Here we are in the land of the Mwila and Mugambwe tribes.

The Tribes :
Province of Huila : Mwila and Mugambwe
Province of Namibe : Mucuval and Mucuroca
Province of Kunene : Muhimba, Mudhimba and Mucawona
We invite you to enjoy our photos and videos about them.

The Camp :
Experience five star camping in Southern Angola, one of the least explored areas in Africa. Our camps include :

Fully equipped kitchens
Heated showers
Toilets
Tents for one or two people, with beds, sheets, mattresses, sleeping bags and pillows
Fridges for food and beverages in the cars

We provide a truck in case of big groups, for all the equipment
Full breakfast
