STUNNING RAINBOW MOUNTAIN HIKE | Our experience hiking Vinicunca in Peru
Time for another day trip from Cusco, and today we are going to do the colorful Rainbow Mountain Hike!
The rainbow part of Rainbow Mountain Peru wasn't discovered until 2015. Before that, the locals simply knew it as Vinicunca or Winikunk. But in 2015, the ice that covered Vinicunca Peru melted and it’s been that way ever since. Climate change uncovered a place that has since become one of Peru’s most beautiful destinations to visit.
In Spanish, it is called Montaña de Siete Colores or Montaña de Colores. Or, simply the Spanish for Rainbow Mountain - Montaña Arcoiris.
When you watch this video, keep in mind that the hike to Rainbow Mountain looks easy. And it would have been if we weren't at 5,200 meters or over 17,000ft.

The 2nd most famous excursion to take from Cusco is a trip to Rainbow Mountain. I did a group trip with Machu Picchu Reservations. It took 3 hours to get there from Cusco and we hiked to the top of Rainbow Mountain (aka Vinicunca), got a photo with some alpacas and then descended through the Red Valley which was stunning! Some of the best views I've seen in my life!

Is travelling solo safe? - I would argue the answer is almost always yes! As long as you use your common sense and you follow your own government's guidelines about travelling in that country. I have made several videos on backpacking safety on my channel.
Do you have plans to settle down? Yes, I'm currently saving to purchase my first property in the UK and I'd love to have children one day. I doubt I'll ever live a completely 'conventional' lifestyle by society's standards though, as I often have my own preferred way of doing things.

STUNNING RAINBOW MOUNTAIN HIKE | My experience hiking in Peru with ALTITUDE SICKNESS
Trekking over 1680 feet in elevation to get to Rainbow Mountain is not for everyone, and can definitely cause altitude sickness, but with the proper precautions, I highly recommend it if you're up to it.

Even after taking a horse up a good part of the way, I got hit with a bad case of altitude sickness on Rainbow Mountain. Headache, nausea, dizziness, instability on my feet, cough, difficulty breathing, vertigo, dizziness, purple finger tips, uncontrollable emotions, and hallucinations are some of the symptoms of altitude sickness I experienced on Rainbow Mountain in Peru. I quit taking my prescription for Diamox (Acetylzolemide) 2 day prior because I had the uncomfortable side effects of severe tingling in my fingers and feet. I drank coca leaf tea that morning, but if I had continued taking my Diamox for prevention of altitude sickness, this may not have happened.
The best thing /treatment to do when symptoms of altitude sickness occur is to get to a lower elevation immediately and stay hydrated with water. Some of the guides carry a can of oxygen with them which would also be helpful. If you're at the top, don't spend much time there. Take a photo and leave. Altitude sickness is really no joke at all. Deaths occur each year from altitude sickness, and it doesn't only hit the weak or out of shape hikers. Even if you are in top physical condition, you can still get altitude sickness.
It took several hours for my body to feel better again, because even at the bottom of the mountain, I was still at 14,000 feet. (about the summit of Mount Whitney in California) And back in Cusco the elevation is 11,000 feet. I napped in the van while everyone ate lunch, drank plenty of fluids, and got back on my Diamox (acetylzolemide) as soon as I got back to my room.
It was a mistake for me to continue to the top after experiencing what I did, and I thank God that nothing bad happened to me. Please be careful if you decide to try a high altitude climb. Listen to your body and be smart. Making it to the top is not as important as your life.

Rainbow Mountain is one of the best places to see (best things to do) in Peru. Today we go to Rainbow Mountain AKA Vinicunca AKA Montana de Siete Colores, a magical mountain of all colors located in Peru. Today is more special than just that...We saw it without any other tourists. We had the chance to see Rainbow Mountain all to ourselves without anyone else around. Vinicunca was one of our favorite and best experiences in Peru. Rainbow Mountain exceeded our expectations because it was everything we wanted and more. The colors are real. Besides Rainbow Mountain, close nearby is The Red Valley and Red Mountain, and those places were just as impressive as Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain. Expectation vs reality. HIKING RAINBOW MOUNTAIN IN PERU ???? 17,000 FT ELEVATION | Latin America Travel Series 07
Hiking Rainbow Mountain was SO beautiful and took our breath away...literally! :)
Prior to our hike, we had done some research and still weren't sure is Rainbow Mountain worth it, when to visit Rainbow Mountain to not be too cold with the elevation, and is Rainbow Mountain real even? :) But we had a blast and are SO glad we did the hike...minus the altitude sickness at the end haha!
When researching, we wondered how to get to Rainbow Mountain and can you drive to Rainbow Mountain - and we are really glad we didn't drive to the Rainbow Mountains Peru as you can see in the video! If you're wondering is Rainbow Mountain hard, the actual hike was not too difficult, except for the altitude. It's definitely worth spending a couple days in Cusco or the Sacred Valley before doing this hike to get acclimated to the elevation a little! And what Rainbow Mountain really looks like all depends on the weather you have, so if you can go on a day with some sunny weather, we'd say Rainbow Mountain is definitely worth visiting!

RAINBOW MOUNTAIN | Winikunka / Vinicunca / Montaña de Siete Colores | Amazing Hikes Near Cusco, Peru
Rainbow Mountain also known as Winikunka or Vinicunca or Montaña de Siete Colores is located in the Pitumarca District of the Cusco Region, Peru. It is among the most colorful mountains in the world due to the seven-color stripes on its summit.
The trailhead is located at the foot of the Ausangate mountain range which is a three-hour drive from the city of Cusco. The hike itself is straightforward, but I advise to be prepared with the elevation as there are many who experience altitude sickness during the hike.
This hike offers stunning views of the Ausangate Mountain range which has diverse geological features such as hanging glacier and glacial valleys, Permian formations with red, ochre, turquoise colors, the Andean uplift made of granite, and the Cretaceous limestone forests. This region is also inhabited by herds of llama and alpaca.
The highlight of this hike is no doubt the Rainbow Mountain itself which showcases seven colors visible from the summit. The colors are attributed to various mineral deposits such as copper, iron, hematite and sulfur, among others. These minerals were buried underneath thick layers of snow for many years. Around 40 years ago, rising temperatures caused snow to melt revealing a completely new landscape.
This hike happened in 2019 just before the pandemic broke out.

In my latest vlog I attempt to hike up Rainbow Mountain Peru! If you're asking yourself what to do in Peru, I highly recommend hiking to Rainbow Mountain. There are other rainbow mountains in the world but not many offer the beauty and ease of access as the hike to Rainbow Mountain Peru.
If you're visiting Cusco Peru to hike Machu Picchu, you should stay another day and add Rainbow Mountain Peru to your list of things to do.
Rainbow Mountain, also called Vinicunca, is not an easy hike. The Rainbow Mountain trek is a challenge mostly because of the altitude. Hiking to Rainbow Mountain Peru can be done by someone in average physical condition but you should be prepared to move slow and drink lots of water.
Despite the arduous hike, Montaña de Colores as it's known in Cusco Perú is amazing. You won't regret your hike to Rainbow Mountain Peru once you get to the top! It was an amazing adventure and should be in every Peru travel guide.

CUSCO, PERU: Vinicunca is the harder of the two rainbow mountains. This Rainbow Mountain here referred as the other Rainbow Mountain, Palcoyo or Palccoyo, is definitely one for the books. We had just hiked for MANY hours through the Andes a couple days ago so we were happy to hear that they had a way for folks to admire Peru's natural wonder without having to think about the best way to make it to the top.
It's a pretty good ride from Cusco but SO worth it.
We give you a great glimpse into what this Second Rainbow Mountain is all about. Don't let the hype fool you. It's still a tough mountain at certain points because of the altitude. You'll see.
Oh and we got totally experience a shaman like experience at the top. A Pachamama worthy ceremony.

Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain Tour I 2021
The Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain at 5200 m (17,060 ft) is a must-visit destination when in Cusco.
The trekking tour takes around 1.5 hours until reaching the top. From there, you’ll have an incredible view of Vinicunca, the surrounding valley and Ausangate, Cusco’s highest mountain.
What our travelers love about our tour is that we get to the top before the crowds arrive. And trust us, this is an enormous difference that impacts the quality of your experience. If possible, we also enter the Red Valley, an out of this world place with red mountains everywhere you look, and go to its viewpoint. However, unfortunately the local community has been closing the entrance very often recently.
The day tour to Vinicunca includes a professional bilingual guide, breakfast & lunch, pickup & drop-off and hiking sticks. You can either choose a private tour or a small-group tour of 2-8 travelers.
