Digital nomads in the Canary Islands - Who? Why? Where? How?
Everything you ever wanted to know about being a digital nomad and the best places to be one.
There has been a lot of negativity on the various forums about Digital Nomads, so in this video I attempt to show you a different perspective and to introduce you to some of these people. I thought some of you might find it interesting - if you do give me a thumbs up & remember to subscribe. I chose a random selection of people to interview who responded to my request on the forums - I did not know their age, their nationality or what they did for a living before I met them.
There are some misconceptions about what a digital nomad is:
Backpackers, hippies with a laptop, party animals, cheapskate, surf-bum - are just a few that I have heard and seen
So let’s start by clearing up these misunderstandings with a few facts:
What is a Digital Nomad?
Digital nomads are people who use telecommunications technologies to earn a living and conduct their life in a nomadic manner. Such workers often work remotely from foreign countries, coffee shops, public libraries, co-working spaces, or recreational vehicles.

Working In/Around Paris, France
If you've ever wondered about living and working in Paris, France (I moved here in '94 from the USA), as long as you accept that it's likely to be a failure, albeit an interesting one, and you have alternative plans and funding in place for if it doesn't work out, you'll probably find it an enriching experience, if not in the monetary sense. You might gain some benefit from my two channels on YouTube and the clips I post on Dailymotion. I welcome your comments and video responses.
About a decade of grinding poverty and deprivation when I first got here weren't fun but I really didn't know what I was doing. Overall, I've found Paris to be much more complex and challenging than New York City ever was for me (I'm originally from the Midwest), but doing some studies elsewhere in Europe long ago and traveling as much as I've been able to manage have definitely changed me.
Oddly, all the suffering and fear I've endured here have given me a kind of peace I never knew before. Could be it's also just resignation -- I'm not sure!
Most of the people I've known who came to Paris wanted to live right in the city itself, thought they could get work easily and keep it, and underestimated the costs involved and the amounts of time needed for various aspects of life here. Many did not make it past the six month or one year point. I've tried to be helpful and give friendly advice and frequently, it wasn't welcome (at first). Later, a few times I did hear, If only I'd listened to you! Oh, well. Being overly focused on outcomes may not be the best way to live life.
