St Barths ~ Saint Barthelemy ~ St Barts ~ Best UAV Drone Caribbean ~ WeBeYachting.com

More footage of beautiful Sint Barthelemy.
Saint Barthélemy, a volcanic island fully encircled by shallow reefs, has an area of 25 square kilometres (9.7 sq mi) and a population of 9,035 (Jan. 2011 estimate). Its capital is Gustavia, which also contains the main harbor to the island. It is the only Caribbean island which was a Swedish colony for any significant length of time; Guadeloupe was under Swedish rule only briefly at the end of the Napoleonic Wars. Symbolism from the Swedish national arms, the Three Crowns, still appears in the island's coat of arms. The language, cuisine, and culture, however, are distinctly French. The island is a popular tourist destination during the winter holiday season, especially for the rich and famous during the Christmas and new year period.

The landing runway is 2170 feet long, and the approach, from either direction, is often plagued by varying degrees of turbulence. As a result, the French aviation authorities require that a special permit be issued to any pilot who intends to land in St. Barts.

Those planning to land in St Barts will have to land in Grand Case, French St Martin, first, in order to get their qualification. St Barts Control tower (Telephone: 590 590 27 65 33 - Fax: 590 590 27 98 96 ) will tell you how to contact a French instructor for certification. It takes a couple of hours, and includes touch-and-go in both directions. Don't do it on a windy day with a hangover.

The landing fee varies from 8.5 Euros to 12.5 Euros, and parking fee is 5.5 Euros/ night.

There are no mechanic nor fuel on the field. Best nearby place for that is at Grand Case Airport in St. Martin. No fuel is available during their long lunch hour.

When you arrive or depart, you are required to deposit a General Declaration form with the immigration officer at the door and file a flight plan : call (+590) 590 27 65 33 or fax (+590) 590 27 98 96.

Saint Barths Bucket Regatta

Between 1986 and 2001, the Nantucket Bucket flourished, becoming a premier Mega Yacht Regatta that invited owners and crews of the world’s largest sailing yachts to sail to peak performance in a safe venue, in the spirit of wholesome competition. The concept of pursuit racing was brought to life by the Bucket, with each Yacht assigned its own start time on a clear starting line for safety, and the start time calibrated to induce the yacht’s speed handicap.  Consequently, the first yacht to cross the finish line, wins.

Within a decade, the St. Barths Bucket expanded beyond all reasonable expectations.  With a limit of 30 yachts required by the local Authorities to keep a handle on the event, the Bucket has been all but full every year since 2005.  In recent years, the fleet has overflowed with applicants even before the Notice of Race is published!

As the Bucket Regattas have evolved, the organizers have kept a tight focus on maintaining the original, non-commercial flavor of the event.  Sponsorship is funded exclusively from the Marine Industry.  The major shipyards, Perini Navi, Royal Huisman Shipyard, Alloy Yachts, Holland Jachtbouw and Vitter’s Shipyard have been particularly generous in their sponsorship of the event.  The clear understanding between the Bucket Race Committee and all sponsors is that these Regattas present a magnificent opportunity for networking within the fleet.  They are explicitly not, an opportunity for overt marketing.  The instruction to the sponsors is that if they need to explain the difference to their representatives, then they are sending the wrong people.
The primary reason for the success of the Bucket Regattas is that the emphasis is more upon wholesome fun than about winning. The stated goal is to “win the party”.  The omnipresent, over riding conundrum for the Bucket Raced Committee is to convince the most competitive owners on planet  (demonstrated by the fact that they own these things in the first place) that winning isn’t important!!

Ile Fourchue ~ St Barths ~ Saint Barthelemy ~ Epic UAV Drone Caribbean ~ WeBeYachting.com

Île Fourchue, 17° 57.3N ~ 062° 54.7W also known as Île Fourche is an island between Saint-Barthélemy and Saint Martin, belonging to the Collectivity of Saint Barthélemy. The island is privately owned and the owners do not want people lighting fires and throwing parties on the island. They don't mind people taking a quiet stroll around the island. The highest point is 340 ft above sea level. It is situated within Réserve naturelle nationale de Saint-Barthélemy. The next time you’re in Saint-Barth, take the opportunity to visit Fourchue, uninhabited islet located 2 miles northwest of Colombier beach. It is a perfect and nearby choice for pleasure boating and picnicking, daytripping or overnight “weather permitting”. There are few mooring for vessels up to 60ft or max 25 tons, for larger vessels you can drop anchor to the south or west of the moorings. Spearfishing, jet skiing and water skiing are strictly forbidden. Part of St. Barth’s marine reserve, Fourchue offers boaters a peaceful place to moor and snorkelers need only hop overboard to acquaint themselves with the underwater of the bay: tropical fish, rays and tons of sea turtles. When exploring Fourchue, bring ample sunscreen, a hat, good sunglasses, water and finally thick-soled, close-toed walking shoes. The island’s former residents, a herd of goats, were placed into early retirement. But when they lived on the islet, they nibbled through every green thing that grew, leaving nothing but naked, rocky terrain populated by cactus, the only thing the goats seemed to show little taste for. Since their departure, the island is greener than it used to be, but it’s a far cry from lush. It is by arid by any standard, and there’s not a shade tree in sight. If you can brave the terrain, you’ll enjoy gamboling up and down Fourchue’s five hills- the highest measuring 340 ft and catching some panoramic views of both St. Barts and St. Martin. You may even see some of the balancing rock installations (artist/s unknown) that have gone up in clusters around the islet.
During your hike, chances are high that you’ll run into the ‘bones’ of the island’s history.  A cistern-in-ruins bears silent testimony to the fact that the island was not always uninhabited. According to records, it was the Swedes who first took interest in the islet. More particularly, it was Swedish botanists, who in 1826, catalogued over 300 plant species there. Around 1788, a young Swedish doctor observed that nowhere else in the Caribbean had he seen as many “English head” (melocactus intortus) as in Fourchue. This particular species of cactus, also found in St. Barths, produces tart, yet edible magenta fruits the size of pumpkin seeds, and at the time, was the snack-of-choice for Fourchue’s wild rabbit and goat population. He shared Fourchue with “several hundred goats” and “an innumerable flock of birds”. At the time the doctor made his observations, the island was also used for quarantine. “When there is a smallpox outbreak”, he noted, “it is customary to send the sick here.” Sickness and isolation were but two of the incalculable hardships suffered by African slaves who were forcibly brought to the Caribbean on European vessels.  Later, around 1813, a Frenchman made Fourchue his home. According to historical accounts, the native of Marseille spent the last fourteen years of his life as a naked hermit. He was reported to have used a coffin as his bed for the duration of his island tenure. He was buried in his ‘bed’, but no trace of his tomb has ever been found. For those who visit the islet today, it is hard to imagine that the island was once animated by pirates and sea merchants who sailed through the West Indies, or by ruthless traders who ran a thriving business of human trafficking. As it turns out, Fourchue’s calm waters made the perfect hand-off spot for contraband, gunpowder among them, freely and illegally traded by American, French and English marines alike. Swedish archives document how pirates captured an American vessel with 380 slaves aboard who were sold off for the sum of $30,000 to unscrupulous bidders. Though they condemned slavery, St. Barth’s former Swedish governors would sidestep moral policy. Heinous or not, the slave trade meant wealth for both local merchants and the Swedish crown, and governors reluctantly tolerated the practice.

Shell Beach in St. Barths

The Crystal Symphony stopped in St. Barths today and it's a beautiful place. It's part of the French West Indies, and today I'm on a beach called Shell Beach which is covered with millions of beautiful shells.

Shell Beach is the only major beach located in a town (St. Barths) and is known for the millions of unique shells that wash up. It's also within walking distance of the capital city of Gustavia, which often hosts weekend festivals. With cliff-diving, restaurants and cocktails by the sea. There is plenty to do!
